During the Trajanic era, Ancona was one of the greatest ports of the Western Adriatic. Scholars have so far considered its remains from a limited historical and topographic perspective. This paper ...explores the Roman port of Ancona during the Imperial period, through a multidisciplinary examination of literary, archaeological and epigraphic sources. This paper investigates the scale, capacity and urban setting of Ancona’s port. Using topographic observations and excavation data, the first section summarises the form and development of the port and identifies its recurring elements, including the quay, mole(s), lighthouse, horrea, etc. The second section investigates the agents and sponsorships responsible for the construction of Ancona’s port. The third section examines the capacity of the port. Using epigraphic, statistical and shipwreck data, it assesses the capacity of the port, by analysing berth widths and the mooring and manoeuvring of ships. The fourth section explores its urban setting and makes a case for the practical and monumental characters of the port. Supporting information on the port topography and epigraphic and archaeological data are presented in the Table.
Soil water erosion on cultivated lands represents a severe threat to soil resources in the world, and especially in Mediterranean areas, due to their topographic, edaphic and climatic conditions. ...Among the cultivated lands, vineyards deserve a particular attention because, aside representing one of the most important crops in terms of income and employment, they also have proven to be the form of agricultural use that causes one of the highest soil losses. Although the topic of soil water erosion on vineyards has been studied, it still raises uncertainties, due to the high variability of procedures for data acquisition, which consists into different scales of analysis and measurement methods. There is still a great gap in knowledge about the effect of triggering factors on soil water erosion and, so far, an effort to quantify this effect on the Mediterranean viticulture has not been made yet. Therefore, this paper review aims to (i) develop a documented database on splash, sheet and rill erosion rates in Mediterranean vineyards, (ii) identify and, if possible, quantify the effect of triggering factors such as topography, soil properties, rainfall characteristics and soil conservation techniques on soil water erosion, and (iii) provide suggestions for a more sustainable viticulture. Although the large variability of data, some general trends between erosion rates and triggering factors could be found, as long as data were categorized according to the same measurement method. However, no general rule upon which to consider one triggering factor always predominant over the others came out. This paper review supports the importance of monitoring soil water erosion by field measurements to better understand the relationship between the factors. However, protocols should be established for standardizing the procedure of collecting data and reporting results to enable data comparison among different study areas.

The 2016–2017 seismic sequence, in central Italy, was caused by the Mt. Vettore‐Mt. Bove active fault system, which generated three mainshocks, the largest one of Mw 6.6, on 30 October 2016. On 18 ...January 2017, four Mw 5–5.5 seismic events nucleated on the Campotosto active fault. The fault is considered as potentially responsible for M ~6.6 seismic events and a seismic gap. The structure also nucleated a Mw 5.4 aftershock during the 2009 L'Aquila seismic sequence. We here combined new geological/geomorphological field data, 1945 aerial photographs interpretation, geodetic (Differential Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar and Global Positioning System) data, and local historical seismicity analysis to determine how much of the Campotosto seismogenic source ruptured during the 2009 and 2016–2017 seismic sequences. The obtained residual seismic moment of the Campotosto seismic gap is in the range Mw 6.4–6.6 earthquake. Moreover, the review of the regional tectonic setting and evolution allowed us a brand new and comprehensive reading of the seismotectonics for the region, in terms of both seismic potential and segmentation of the seismogenic sources, which results strictly connected to the long‐term activity of inherited lithospheric discontinuities, among which the major Ancona‐Anzio fault. We here first highlight that such regional structures strongly influenced the structural setting and evolution of the surrounding regions, in a progressive and continuous process of tectonic inversions, which implies that structural heritage must be understood and considered when dealing with seismotectonics of a given tectonically active region.

Due to its peculiar geopolitical layout, Ancona is connoted by a manifold linguistic profile – particularly for what concerns the consonantal system. However, this area has been so far scarcely ...investigated from a phonetic perspective. In this work, we propose the first acoustic description of selected consonants, as spoken in the local Italian variety: /p, t, k, s/. Literature unanimously reports that the local dialect is characterized by: a) the consonantal weakening of northern origin, which provokes voicing of /p, t, k, s/ in intervocalic position and degemination; b) the affrication of /s/ after /l, n, r/ – typical of other areas in central Italy. The aim is to verify whether these phenomena are attested also in the Italian variety spoken in Ancona. For this purpose, we conducted an acoustic analysis on spontaneous productions of 12 adult subjects (6 males and 6 females). While the sonorization of intervocalic /s/, which occurs in both northern and standard Italian pronunciations with all the well-known exceptions, is regular, the sonorization/lenition of voiceless plosives and degemination do not surface systematically. Presumably, these traits are perceived – more or less consciously – as socio-phonetic markers, thus mostly avoided in the pronunciation of Italian. At phonetic level, the dialectal interference is however statistically more pervasive in the male sample.
U doba Trajana, Ancona je bila jedna od najvećih luka na zapadnom Jadranu. U prošlosti su znanstvenici sagledavali njezine ostatke s ograničenog povijesnog i topografskog motrišta. U ovome radu ...razmatra se rimska luka Ancona u carskom razdoblju kroz multidisciplinarnu analizu književnih, arheoloških i epigrafskih izvora. Rad preispituje veličinu, kapacitet i urbano okruženje luke Ancone. U prvome djelu, kroz topografska razmatranja i podatke o iskapanjima donosi se pregled oblika i razvitka luke i prepoznaju elementi koji se ponavljaju, među ostalima gat, mol(ovi), svjetionik, horrea itd. Drugi dio bavi se izvođačima i investitorima zaslužnima za izgradnju luke Ancone. U trećem dijelu preispituje se kapacitet luke. Epigrafski i statistički podatci te podatci prikupljeni u istraživanjima olupina potopljenih brodova omogućili su procjenu kapaciteta luke kroz analizu širine vezova, načina vezivanja brodova i brodskih manevara. Četvrti dio istražuje njezino urbano okruženje i iznosi zaključke u pogledu praktičnih i spomeničkih obilježja luke. Informacije koje idu u prilog topografiji luke te epigrafski i arheološki podaci prikazani su u tablici.
In this article I explain the manifold aspects of the work begun last year (2023) and still ongoing with the collection of Avvisi e Gazzette, which is being catalogued in the Public Library ...Planettiana di Jesi. Since this collection is without any doubts one of the most interesting among the Planettina library, it was chosen for the project of digitization of the PNRR - Mission 1 Cultural Heritage for the next generation - coordinated by the Marche Region. In this contribution I deal with the steps which led to the making of Pianetti family’s library, focusing in peculiar on the role of Bishop Giuseppe Pianetti. After a short presentation on the historical side of Avvisi e Gazzette, I aim to focus on the methodology used in setting up an experimental template to be published on MANUS platform,including in just one tab-mother all the elements in according to the rules of the two specific Italian platforms: in SBN for printed works and in MANUS for manuscripts.

We compute a high-resolution topographic model of the Moho beneath the fault system activated during the 2016–2017 Central Italy seismic sequence, using Receiver Function (RF) analyses. We document ...that Ps conversions recorded in RF data-set varies abruptly at very short distance across the crustal lineament called Ancona-Anzio Line (AAL). Moho depth varies from about 25-30 km in the Tyrrhenian domain on the West to 35-40 km in the Adriatic domain in the East. Where the two domains are juxtaposed along the AAL, Moho depth values cluster around 50 km depth, in a stripe-like area 20 km wide. Such unique feature marks the deformation zone in the lithosphere and testifies the abrupt change in delamination style in the two sectors of the Apennines. Intermittent large normal faulting earthquakes driven by across-belt extension break through such inherited strong structural changes, conditioned by localized barriers to fluids migration and overpressuring.

This is the second of a series of two papers dealing with local limit theorems in relatively hyperbolic groups. In this second paper, we restrict our attention to non-spectrally degenerate random ...walks and we prove precise asymptotics of the probability $p_n(e,e)$ of going back to the origin at time $n$. We combine techniques adapted from thermodynamic formalism with the rough estimates of the Green function given by part I to show that $p_n(e,e)\sim CR^{-n}n^{-3/2}$, where $R$ is the inverse of the spectral radius of the random walk. This both generalizes results of Woess for free products and results of Gouëzel for hyperbolic groups.
Spectral analyses of high-resolution records from the upper Eocene-lower Oligocene from the Massignano section, GSSP for the Eocene/Oligocene (E/O) boundary, and the nearby Massicore reveal orbitally ...controlled fluctuations in the percent concentration of calcium carbonate (wt% CaCO3) and magnetic susceptibility. Extraction of orbital components provides a consistent cyclochronology for the two sites that straddles the E/O boundary. Detection of longer-term modulation in the short eccentricity enabled tuning to the astronomical solution and development of a robust astrochronology for the E/O boundary transition in the GSSP section. Correlation with astrochronologically dated records allowed us to identify the local sedimentary response to the global paleoclimatic and palaeoceanographic events that characterize the greenhouse-icehouse transition during the late Eocene-early Oligocene.
•The Massignano section is the reference for the Eocene/Oligocene boundary.•We provide an astrochronologically calibrated record of the Massignano GSSP.•The age model enables precise correlation of the standard Eocene/Oligocene boundary.
