Housing is shaped by culturally-specific expectations about the kinds of architecture and furnishings that are appropriate; about how and where different activities should be carried out; and by and ...with whom. It is those expectations, and the wider social and cultural systems of which they are a part, that are explored in this volume. At the same time, the book as a whole argues two larger points: first, that while houses, households and families have in recent years become increasingly important as objects of inquiry in Greek and Roman contexts, their potential as sources of information about broader social-historical issues has yet to be fully realised; and second, that greater weight and independence should be given to material culture as a source for studying ancient history. The book will be invaluable for upper-level undergraduates, graduate students and scholars.
Eastern European prefabricated housing blocks are often vilified as the visible manifestations of everything that was wrong with state socialism. For many inside and outside the region, the ...uniformity of these buildings became symbols of the dullness and drudgery of everyday life.Manufacturing a Socialist Modernitycomplicates this common perception. Analyzing the cultural, intellectual, and professional debates surrounding the construction of mass housing in early postwar Czechoslovakia, Zarecor shows that these housing blocks served an essential function in the planned economy and reflected an interwar aesthetic, derived from constructivism and functionalism, that carried forward into the 1950s.With a focus on prefabricated and standardized housing built from 1945 to 1960, Zarecor offers broad and innovative insights into the country's transition from capitalism to state socialism. She demonstrates that during this shift, architects and engineers consistently strove to meet the needs of Czechs and Slovaks despite challenging economic conditions, a lack of material resources, and manufacturing and technological limitations. In the process, architects were asked to put aside their individual creative aspirations and transform themselves into technicians and industrial producers.Manufacturing a Socialist Modernityis the first comprehensive history of architectural practice and the emergence of prefabricated housing in the Eastern Bloc. Through discussions of individual architects and projects, as well as building typologies, professional associations, and institutional organization, it opens a rare window into the cultural and economic life of Eastern Europe during the early postwar period.
Diagrids are load-bearing structures made of steel diagonal grids. They were first used in the great buildings of the turn of the millennium, such as the Swiss Re Tower in London ("The Gherkin") and ...the Hearst Magazine Tower in New York City. Dagrids owe their ensuing popularity not only to their stunning aesthetic value, but also to their very tangible benefits: lateral loading capacity, a massive saving of material, a significant gain in open, usable floor area, and increased flexibility. At its opening in 2014, the Leadenhall Building in London will be the first skyscraper without a bearing inner core-thanks to a diagrid structure. This book explains comprehensively for the first time all of the aspects involved in this new bearing structure. The author, experienced in teaching, research, and practice (recent publication: Understanding Steel Design. An Architectural Design Manual, 2011), has tracked the development of this technology from its beginnings and employs photographic documentation of the construction phases of many diagrid structures.
After World War II, France embarked on a project of modernization, which included the development of the modern mass home.At Home in Postwar Franceexamines key groups of actors - state officials, ...architects, sociologists and tastemakers - arguing that modernizers looked to the home as a site for social engineering and nation-building; designers and advocates of the modern home contributed to the democratization of French society; and the French home of theTrente Glorieuses, as it was built and inhabited, was a hybrid product of architects', planners', and residents' understandings of modernity. This volume identifies the "right to comfort" as an invention of the postwar period and suggests that the modern mass home played a vital role in shaping new expectations for well-being and happiness.
With a consideration of the key concepts of housing, landscape, and roads, this study discusses a number of housing areas in Ankara that are planned, designed, and add value to the city. The ...intention of the study is to better understand integrated design decisions on housing, landscape and roads, by examining the original drawings and conceptual proposals of selected project designers. The research takes an analytical reading of a period starting from the Early Republican area, when the road was conceptualized as the public space of the house, to the current state where the interface between the housing area and the road is mostly obstructed. Providing a consideration of three historical periods, the article mainly focuses on Demirtas Kamcil and Rahmi Bediz's Israel houses, Fatin Uran's Ilbank blocks, and Altug-Behruz Cinici's Sincan Elvankoy mass housing complex projects. It intends to deduce the common ground of these projects with different contexts, scales, and spatial organizations in order to lay the necessary knowledge ground for alternative design and planning approaches in the constitution of the housing-landscape-road relationship, which appear to be widely lost today. In the 10th century, the arrabales of Córdoba underwent a process of rapid growth, triggered by the growing political authority of the capital of the western caliphate. This involved the urbanisation ...of erstwhile agricultural areas, with new streets and public buildings such as baths, mosques, and funduqs, as well as whole blocks of houses. Domestic blocks generally took the shape of lines of houses that were similar in plan. Among domestic models, which invariably revolved around a courtyard, the most basic type-rectangular in plan, with a central courtyard and a bay on either side-was also the most numerous. This work examines the characteristics and expansions of these buildings, in order to better understand the process that led to the crystallisation of Andalusi urban fabrics.
Antakya, known as Antioch during the ancient period, has been inhabited continuously and formed/re-formed and transformed from antiquity to the present by different cultures and empires. It had an ...organic city form organized with culs-de-sac towards the end of the Ottoman Period. Previous research particularly conducted on its multi-layered urban identity together with on certain buildings from antiquity focuses on the study of the architecture that formed throughout the Ottoman period until it ended. On the other hand, there is not enough research on the new urban interfaces and uses created by the French Mandate Period (1918-1938), which has had an impact on the city's change and transformation. As a result of the development activities carried out throughout Antakya during the French Mandate period, new or transformed architectural forms--that did not take place during Antakya's Ottoman Period- emerged. This study focuses on researching the formation and transformation processes of the houses belonging to the historical urban fabric of Antakya from the French Mandate Period ranging from the city scale to a single residential building. In this context, the evaluations made at the city scale and at the building scale with regard to infrastructure-urban architecture and traditional houses will seek answers to the questions of how the traditional houses of Antakya underwent change and transformation in an evolutionary manner during the French Mandate Period, how the modern life-style was integrated into the physical structure by feeding off of tradition, and how the emerging architecture realizes the construction of the new within a reformist framework while remaining faithful to its essence.
