The Central Andes are the product of contractional deformation related to subduction of the Nazca plate beneath the South American continent. In this geodynamic setting, thrust belt propagation in ...the Central Andean retroarc in NW Argentina and southern Bolivia has been linked with the critical wedge model implying progressive eastward migration of the deformation front during the Cenozoic. However, Eocene unconformities and growth strata within the orogenic hinterland of the Eastern Cordillera and Puna Plateau suggest selective reactivation of pre-Andean and Andean faults revealing a pattern of diachronous and spatially disparate range uplifts. The Calchaquí Valley in NW Argentina is characterized by basin-and-range morphology, which is intimately linked with the heterogeneous Neoproterozoic basement, Cretaceous rift structures, and the Cenozoic foreland. In this study, we analyze this complex deformation by reconstructing Cenozoic fault reactivation and sedimentation patterns in the Eastern Cordillera. Detailed structural mapping along the eastern Calchaquí border (Tonco area) reveals five Cenozoic unconformities in the former foreland deposits related to multiple episodes of fault reactivation during the Eocene-to-Pleistocene. A refined chronostratigraphy (U-Pb zircon), new AHe thermochronological data (apatite U-Th-Sm/He), and existing evidence for deformation indicate episodic out-of-sequence deformation and increased Eo-Oligocene (Puna Plateau) to Miocene (Eastern Cordillera) fault displacement apparently controlled by pre-Cenozoic heterogeneities. The coeval eastward propagation of deformation and continuing deformation in the west generally challenge the applicability of the critical wedge model.

The lowermost part of the Agua de la Mula Member (upper Hauterivian), Agrio Formation, was studied in distal depositional settings at four locations in the central Neuquén Basin. Detailed ...sedimentological and ichnological analysis combining field data and microfacies, using petrography, X-ray diffraction, and organic geochemical data allow to recognize two facies associations, representing proximal to distal facies of a mixed, carbonate-siliciclastic homoclinal outer ramp. The distal outer ramp facies association (FA-1) contains mudstones accumulated by suspension settling during periods of high productivity in the water column with calcareous microfossils as fecal pellets and organo-minerallic aggregates. Very thin (<5 mm thick) beds with local skeletal debris and subtle erosional features suggest storm-generated turbidite-like deposits related to bottom currents that interrupted this “low-energy” scenario. Conversely, the proximal outer ramp facies association (FA-2) is mainly composed of illite-rich floccules with terrigenous organic matter derived from the hinterland, probably transported by suspension in the way of benthic fluid mud. The partially bioturbated clay-bearing, silt-rich mudstones are organized into stacked successions of sharp-based, normally graded and very thin (<5 mm thick) beds indicative of erosive waning flows. In these mudstones, the preservation of parallel to curved ripple lamination indicates storm-driven bottom currents that transported mud as bed load into the proximal outer ramp. Some bioturbated mudstones with Phycosiphon incertum demonstrate a close relationship between event bed deposits and oxygenation pulses of the bottom waters by storm-influenced processes.

In all countries, the priority of policymakers is to reduce carbon emissions without reducing economic growth performance. Progress in innovation is one of the main measures that can be used to ...reduce carbon emissions. It is important to demonstrate the impact of innovation at the sectoral level, in terms of more realistic data on policy measures. The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of innovation on carbon emissions on a sectorial basis for fourteen countries in the G20, for the period between 1991 and 2017. The selected countries are Argentina, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Mexico, South Africa, Turkey, the United Kingdom, and the United States for which data is available. The results show that the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) hypothesis is invalid and, in the long-term, innovations did not have a statistically significant effect on the energy sector, transport sector, and other sectors. It was also found that while an increase in innovation in the industrial sector leads to a reduction in carbon emissions, an increase in innovation in the construction sector increases carbon emissions. Therefore, it can be recommended that, in addition to national policies to reduce CO2 emissions, specific policies should be implemented for each sector separately.
•Innovation on carbon emission on a sectorial basis for 14 countries in G20 for 1971–2017.•The Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) hypothesis is invalid.•Long-term innovations didn’t have a significant effect on the energy sector, transport sector, and other sectors.•The increase in innovation in the industrial sector leads to a reduction in carbon emissions.•Increasing innovation in the construction sector increases carbon emissions.
The Puesto Viejo Group crops out in the San Rafael Block, southwest Mendoza, at approximately 35° S and 68°20′ W. It consists of the basal mainly grayish Quebrada de los Fósiles Formation (QF) ...overlying by the reddish Río Seco de la Quebrada Formation (RSQ). The basal unit includes both plant remains (pleuromeians and sphenopsids) and vertebrates (scattered fish scales, dicynodont synapsids and remains of an archosauriform). In contrast, the RSQ beds have yielded only tetrapods, although a more diverse fauna. The latter includes cynodonts as Cynognathus, Pascualognathus and Diademodon, and also dicynodonts (Vinceria and Kannemeyeria). Based on the assemblage of tetrapod taxa the bearing levels were correlated to the Cynognathus AZ of South Africa and thus referred to the Middle Triassic (Anisian). We obtained a SHRIMP 238U/206Pb age of 235.8 ± 2.0 Ma from a rhyolitic ignimbrite interdigitated between the QF and RSQ formations at the Quebrada de los Fósiles section. This new radiometric date for the Puesto Viejo Group suggests that the tetrapod fauna in the RSQ beds existed, instead, during the Late Triassic (early Carnian) some 10 Ma later than the currently accepted age. Two scenarios might explain our results: first, the Cynognathus AZ of South Africa is wrongly assigned to the lower Middle Triassic (Anisan) and should be considered younger in age, Late Triassic (Carnian); second, the relative age of the Cynognathus AZ of South Africa is correct but the inferred range of Cynognathus and Diademodon is incorrect as they were present during the Late Triassic (Carnian) at least in South America. In any case, this new date pose serious doubts about the validity of biostratigraphic correlations based solely on tetrapod taxa, a common practice for Triassic continental successions across Gondwana.

•An absolute age is presented for the continental Triassic Puesto Viejo Group, Argentina.•The included tetrapods are now 10 Ma younger than by correlations with South Africa.•The validity of the South African biostratigraphic scheme for Gondwana is questioned.
The 51.9 Ma Laguna del Hunco (LH) and 47.5 Ma Río Pichileufú (RP) floras from Patagonia, Argentina are unusually rich, angiosperm-dominated assemblages with living relatives in the low-latitude West ...Pacific, neotropics, and temperate southern latitudes. The diverse gymnosperms in these floras are important for Gondwanan biogeographic history and paleoclimatic interpretations. "Libocedrus" prechilensis Berry 1938 (Cupressaceae), previously known only from the holotype (RP), a vegetative branch, is revised here based on new material from both localities, including a seed cone attached to a shoot with cuticle (LH). Characters of these fossils are diagnostic of monotypic Papuacedrus (highlands of New Guinea and Moluccas). Living P. papuana is most abundant in cloud forests receiving up to 4 m rainfall annually, whereas Austrocedrus (Libocedrus) chilensis, the basis of comparison when the fossil species was named, inhabits dry, cold steppe margins to mediterranean climates in southern South America. We establish Papuacedrus prechilensis comb. nov., which simultaneously invalidates a southern South American connection for the fossil floras and reveals a link to West Pacific montane rainforests. Combined evidence indicates a biome similar to extant subtropical, or tropical montane, rainforests that persisted for at least 4.4 Myr, linking elevated floral richness to abundant rainfall.
Quadruped trackways of large pentadactyl footprints are reported from the Middle Triassic (Anisian-Ladinian) Cerro de las Cabras Formation of the Cuyo Basin, Mendoza Province, central-western ...Argentina. The track-bearing strata are interpreted as deposited by sheetfloods in a mixed flat where water was ponded in a playa-lake setting. The vertebrate trackways are assigned to the ichnogenus Pentasauropus, originally described from the Upper Triassic Elliot Formation of South Africa, based on the presence of five equally spaced digit imprints that form an anteriorly convex broad arcuate pattern. A new ichnospecies, Pentasauropus argentinae nov. isp., is erected for the Argentinian material because of the distinct heteropody, inward rotation of the pes and outward rotation of the manus imprints, and the presence of palm/sole traces, and the diagnosis of the ichnogenus is emended. Pes/manus set arrangement and trackway patterns indicate a sprawling limbed trackmaker with an abducted posture for the fore-limbs and at least a semi-abducted posture for the hindlimbs, which suggests that the trackmaker was a kannemeyeriiform dicynodont. Associated archosaur ichnotaxa (Chirotherium barthii, Chirotherium cf. C. rex, Isochirotherium cf. I. coureli) point to a Middle Triassic age for the trackway-bearing strata in agreement with bracketing geochronological data. The rare occurrence of the therapsid footprint Dicynodontipus isp. is also compatible with the inferred age. The moderate abundance and oldest occurrence of Pentasauropus from three areas in Argentina suggest an origin for this ichnogenus in southwestern Gondwana, and presumably this area was a faunal exchange gate between southeastern and southwestern Gondwana and south Gondwana and North America.
