The translocation of wild animal species became a common practice worldwide to re-establish local populations threatened with extinction. Archaeological data confirm that chamois once lived in the ...Biokovo Mountain but, prior to their reintroduction in the 1960s, there was no written evidence of their recent existence in the area. The population was reintroduced in the period 1964-1969, when 48 individuals of Balkan chamois from the neighbouring mountains in Bosnia and Herzegovina were released. The main objective of this study was to determine the accuracy of the existing historical data on the origin of the Balkan chamois population from the Biokovo Mountain and to assess the genetic diversity and population structure of the source and translocated populations 56 years after reintroduction. Sixteen microsatellite loci were used to analyse the genetic structure of three source chamois populations from Prenj, Čvrsnica and Čabulja Mountains and from Biokovo Mountain. Both STRUCTURE and GENELAND analyses showed a clear separation of the reintroduced population on Biokovo from Prenj's chamois and considerable genetic similarity between the Biokovo population and the Čvrsnica-Čabulja population. This suggests that the current genetic composition of the Biokovo population does not derive exclusively from Prenj, as suggested by the available literature and personal interviews, but also from Čvrsnica and Čabulja. GENELAND analysis recognised the Balkan chamois from Prenj as a separate cluster, distinct from the populations of Čvrsnica and Čabulja. Our results thus highlight the need to implement genetic monitoring of both reintroduced and source populations of endangered Balkan chamois to inform sustainable management and conservation strategies in order to maximise the chances of population persistence.
Little is known on the occurrence of Pyraloidea species from Croatian mountains and there is no species list from Mountain of Biokovo. We provide new data on Pyraloidea species recorded from Biokovo ...Natural Park. The species list contains information on date and locality of species recorded during field surveys conducted by the first author between 2016 and 2019 and the second author between 1985 and 2018. During these field surveys, 71 Pyraloidea species were recorded. The list was complemented with six species known only from literature data. Altogether we report 77 Pyraloidea species, 54 belonging to the family Crambidae and 23 belonging to the family Pyralidae. This represents about 20,5% of the overall Croatian Pyraloidea fauna. Some interesting species that have been previously known only from historic literature are reported from Biokovo Mountain, for example, Catoptria acutangulella (Herrich-Schäffer, 1847), a montane specie that has not been recorded in Croatia since 1896 and Biokovo Mountain since 1850 (the results have been published elsewhere). The species Mecyna trinalis (Denis & Schiffermüller, 1775) has been recorded for the first time in Dalmatia. The species Udea numeralis (Hübner, 1796), Evergestis limbata (Linnaeus, 1767) and Hypsopygia fulvocilialis (Duponchel, 1834) have been reported for the first time from Dalmatia in almost 150 years and the species Selagia spadicella (Hübner, 1796), Agriphila inquinatella (Denis & Schiffermüller, 1775) and Agriphila straminella (Denis & Schiffermüller, 1775) have been reported for the first time in almost 100 years. Also, 15 species have been reported for the first time from Dalmatia in decades, like Dolicharthria bruguieralis (Duponchel, 1833), a species that has not been reported in almost 85 years.This paper deepens the knowledge on the distribution of Pyraloidea species occurring in Biokovo Natural Park and reconfirms the occurrence of many species that have not been reported from Croatia in decades.

B. kaltenbachi
should be considered an endangered species, while
R. buchichii
is suggested to be downgraded to a less threatened category. Biogeography and evolution of the species are briefly discussed.
Seventeen gravity springs from the slopes of the Biokovo, Sutvid and Rilić Mountains at the Adriatic coast of Croatia were investigated. Five of them are included in the regional and three of them ...are included in the local water supply system. Other springs are used by local inhabitants and tourists for drinking. The aim of this study was to determine the underground karst connections, source and type of the groundwater defining different hydrochemical facies, the aquifer behavior and the impact of the rehabilitated landfill Donja Gora on karstic springs due to the detected anomalous concentrations of lead in sediments. Hydrochemical facies was determined using a Piper diagram. It was shown that groundwater belongs to the Ca–HCO3 type of water.
Concentrations of 17 dissolved and total trace elements, organic compounds, organic carbon, nutrients and ions, phenols, PCBs and mineral oil microbiological properties, physical and chemical indicators were determined in groundwater samples. Their concentrations were extremely low, more than 3 orders of magnitude less than allowed by the Croatian regulations for the first category of groundwater and drinking water, so the quality of water is excellent. Origin of some elements is discussed and complex statistical analysis is performed, using log-probability plots and partitioning of distributions following the Sinclair graphical procedure. Majority of minor and trace element concentrations show unimodal distribution of the data. Only five elements (Al, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn) show the combinations of 2 or 3 log-normal distributed populations, probably reflecting the presence of different sources and/or processes.
For the first time, isotopic investigations were performed in any karst region of Croatia, measuring the concentration of dissolved radon in the groundwater. The measured values of radon concentrations for spring water ranged from 0.45BqL−1 to 16.53BqL−1. These results are much lower than the reference level of 100BqL−1 set by the European Commission for drinking water. The lowest radon concentration 0.44BqL−1 was measured at the surface water intake on the Cetina River.
The mass fractions of 16 elements were determined in 3 representative spring sediments. Highest concentrations of some metals in total sediments (mgkg−1, d.w.) are: lead 2601, chromium 244, silver 1.11, manganese 1178, zinc 322, copper 507 and barium 461. Lead concentrations are assumed to be of natural origin.

Hydrogeological investigations were performed during two seasons with dye tracing, using Na-fluoresceine which was poured into two pits, observing springs at distances of 1.82–8.8km. Apparent velocities were 0.21–0.51cms−1. Dye tracing was first time partially effective and second time ineffective, what could be due to immanent ore mineralization, which presents a natural barrier and was discovered by geochemical and mineralogical methods.

From 2016 to 2020 numerous surveys were undertaken to improve the knowledge of the pyraloid moth fauna of Biokovo Nature Park. On August 27th, 2020 one specimen of Psorosa mediterranella (Amsel, ...1954) from the family Pyralidae was collected on a small meadow (985 m a.s.l.) on Mt Biokovo. In this paper, the first data about the occurrence of this species in Croatia are presented. The previous mention in the literature for Croatia was considered to be a misidentification of the past and has thus not been included in the checklist of Croatian pyraloid moth species. P. mediterranella was recorded for the first time in Croatia in recent investigations and, after other additions to the checklist have been counted, is the 396th species in the Croatian pyraloid moth fauna. An overview of the overall pyraloid moth fauna of Croatia is given in the updated species list.
Chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra L.) with the Biokovo Nature Park is one of the largest and most stable populations of chamois in Croatia. Reintroduced in year 1964, and present estimated population size ...is estimated at 350 to 400 individuals. Estimate of population size is very important, since the animals inhabit and are often distributed across forest habitats, it is sometimes difficult and/or very expensive. Therefore, our objective was use of sensor cameras to estimate population density and population structure of chamois on the Biokovo mountain. The study was conducted in summer 2011th year, with three sensor cameras in three different localities. The cameras have recorded a total of 1003 JPEG images. During monitoring, we recorded 164 different individuals of chamois, of which there are 119 female and 45 male specimens. Daily dynamics of arriving was the highest in two periods, morning between 06:00 and 08:00, and in the evening between 18:00 and 20:00. The results of sensor cameras can be considered valid, and are extremely technical aid for the better management and protection of animal species, because we have data on the structure of the population.

Biokovo je gorski masiv v obalnem delu Dinarskega gorstva na Hrvaškem. S podrobno morfografsko in morfometrično analizo najvišjega dela gorskega masiva smo določili obseg in značilnosti ...mlajšepleistocenske poledenitve. Izdelali smo rekonstrukcijo topografije ledenikov in izračunali višino njihove ravnovesne meje. Ugotovili smo, da sta bila severovzhodno pod vrhom Sveti Jure dva krniška ledenika s skupno površino 1 km2, ravnovesna meja pa je bila na višini 1515 m.
