Theme in EI with Variations, "Ghost Variations" * Florian Uhlig (pn) * HÄNSSLER 17040 (2 CDs: 127:40) Extending pianist Florian Uhlig's ambition to record Robert Schumann's complete works for piano, ...this Volume 14 (of a projected 15) assembles all original manuscripts between 1830 and 1854, in accord with the newest critical editions, even first editions, and offering the various alternative versions of works discovered in booklets by Joachim Draheim, a musicologist eager to preserve Schumann's intentions, whether as virtuoso vehicles or pedagogical exercises for technical development. The various Beethoven exercises and variations (1833-35, published 1976) in the two sets afforded us here again rely on Beethoven's Allegretto as the inspiration for Schumann's sketch books. Since Schumann left no clear template for the form his compressed Beethoven studies would assume in a larger context, so the A-Minor 6-4 chord given at Beethoven's Allegretto opening stands for the whole theme. By this time, Schumann's mental condition contained a constant alternation of angels and demons, and the subtitle "Ghost Variations" relates less to the occult than to their affinity with the Songs of the Early Morning, op. 133.

While he was not a success as a conductor, the music he composed for the group was extremely well received,2 and in 1863 and 1864 the group premiered a number of selections from WoO 34, a set of i4 ...partsongs Brahms composed in those years.3 These four-part, primarily homophonic folksongs have been performed since the i860s and also recorded.4 In contrast to this not insignificant performance activity, the only study we have seen of the pieces is an interesting thesis making the case for their arrangement for wind band.5 The fifth number (ex.i) is our favourite piece from the set. ...the first two complete root-position triads used in the piece - the F major chord in bars 3-4 and the aforementioned EB major chord in bar 5 - make more sense as a Mixolydian I-BVII progression than they do as a V-IV 'retrogression' in BB major, even separated as they are by a weakbeat first-inversion BB major chord at the end of bar 4.
