In any production and service industry, the safety of their workers/labors is very critical. The workers directly related with production are generally more prone to the threats because of their ...exposure to electro-mechanical, chemical, thermal, environmental, civil and other hazards. The coal mining industry in one of the most risky industries in terms of workers’ lives hazards. In the under-developed countries, any potential disaster in the underground mining turns into huge catastrophic losses of both the human lives and equipment. This paper presents some statistical data of mining disasters worldwide and propose an architecture for a smart helmet to be used by miners for their safe working inside the coalmines.
This paper presents a novel approach to environmental assessment of coal mining operations, which enables assessment of the factors that are both directly and indirectly affecting the environment and ...are associated with the production of raw materials and energy used in processes. The primary novelty of the paper is the development of a computational environmental life cycle assessment (LCA) model for coal mining operations and the application of the model for coal mining operations in Poland. The LCA model enables the assessment of environmental indicators for all identified unit processes in hard coal mines with the life cycle approach. The proposed model enables the assessment of greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs) based on the IPCC method and the assessment of damage categories, such as human health, ecosystems and resources based on the ReCiPe method. The model enables the assessment of GHGs for hard coal mining operations in three time frames: 20, 100 and 500years. The model was used to evaluate the coal mines in Poland. It was demonstrated that the largest environmental impacts in damage categories were associated with the use of fossil fuels, methane emissions and the use of electricity, processing of wastes, heat, and steel supports. It was concluded that an environmental assessment of coal mining operations, apart from direct influence from processing waste, methane emissions and drainage water, should include the use of electricity, heat and steel, particularly for steel supports. Because the model allows the comparison of environmental impact assessment for various unit processes, it can be used for all hard coal mines, not only in Poland but also in the world. This development is an important step forward in the study of the impacts of fossil fuels on the environment with the potential to mitigate the impact of the coal industry on the environment.

Soil heavy metals harm ecological biodiversity and human health, and quantifying the risks more accurately is still obscure. In this study, a network environ analysis was applied to quantify risks ...between ecological communities based on control allocation and human health risk models to calculate human health exposure risks from soil heavy metals around Greenside coal mining in South Africa. Ecological and human health risks were apportioned using PMF model. Results showed assessed heavy metals (mean) exceeded local background content with a cumulative of moderately polluted using pollution load index (PLI). Total initial risk (Ri), the risk to biological organisms from direct soil exposure, was 0.656 to vegetation and 1.093 to soil microorganisms. Risk enters the food web via vegetation and harms the whole system. Integrated risks (initial, direct, and indirect) to vegetation, herbivores, soil microorganisms, and carnivores were 0.656, 0.125, 1.750, and 0.081, respectively, revealing that soil microorganisms are the most risk receptors. Total Hazard Index (HIT) was <1 for adults (0.574) whereas >1 for children (4.690), signifying severe non-cancer effects to children. Total cancer risk (TCR) to children and adults surpassed the unacceptable limit (1.00E-04). Comparatively, Cr is a high-risk metal accounted for 63.24% (adults) and 65.88% (children) of the HIT and 92.98% (adults) and 91.31% (children) of the TCR. Four sources were apportioned. Contributions to Ri (soil microorganisms and vegetation) from F3 (industrial), F4 (atmospheric), F2 (coal mining), and F1 (natural) were 42.20%, 24.56%, 23.55%, and 9.68%, respectively. The non-cancer risk from F3 (37.67% to adults and 38.40% to children) was dominant, and TCR to children from the sources except F1 surpassed the unacceptable limit. An integrated approach of risk quantification is helpful in managing risks and reducing high-risk pollution sources to better protect the environment and human health.

Indonesia is the third largest coal producer in the world. Indonesia's total coal production in 2018 is 528 million tons. Of this amount, 320 million tons are produced by coal mining companies listed ...on the Indonesia Stock Exchange. Among these coal mining companies, there are large performance gaps between each other, both in terms of financial performance and production achievement. Their performance is hypothesized to be influenced by leadership style. The purpose of this study was to analyze the influence of servant leadership and breakthrough leadership on organizational performance with employee satisfaction as an intervening variable in coal mining companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange. Respondents from this study were 12 coal mining companies listed on the IDX in Indonesia. The type of research used is quantitative methods. The research respondents were 113 people in the position of supervisors to directors. Data were analyzed using the Structural Equation Model (SEM - AMOS). The results showed that servant leadership did not have a positive impact on employee satisfaction but had a positive impact on organizational performance, while Breakthrough Leadership had a positive impact on employee satisfaction but did not have a positive impact on organizational performance. Employee satisfaction has a positive and significant impact on organizational performance but does not mediate organizational performance. Novelty from this research is about breakthrough leadership.
Coal mining technology directly affects coal production quantity and quality, which in turn affects global energy supplies, especially in rapidly urbanizing, industrializing economies. In this ...research, a coal production technological diffusion mathematical model is proposed, the results from which indicated that while total coal production is expected to decline in the following decades, coal will continue to provide a sizable share of global prime energy to meet the expected energy demands. A general data analysis was conducted to fully understand coal mining technological paradigmatic development and future necessary improvements to ensure more efficient, environmentally-friendly coal production. It was found that the coal mining technological paradigm followed a three-stage trajectory; competition, diffusion, and shift; in accordance with the traditional technological paradigm S-curve, and underground coal gasification (UCG) related technologies were identified as the main development direction for coal mining technologies. An integrated energy exploitation approach for ecological coal mining was then designed to deal with current environmental and energy returns on investment problems, to improve performance, and to act as a foundation for future UCG technological developments. Some policy recommendations are given to guide the implementation of the proposed ecologically oriented integrated coal mining system.

The environmental damage caused by surface subsidence and coal-based solid waste (CBSW) is a common problem in the process of coal mining. Backfill mining can control the mining-induced subsidence ...and solve the problem of bulk solid waste storage. In the present work, a magnesium-coal slag solid waste backfill material (MCB) with modified magnesium slag (MS) as binder and CBSW (fly ash (FA), flue gas desulfurization gypsum (FDG) and coal gasification slag (CGS)) as supplementary cementitious material/aggregate was proposed to meet the needs of coal mining in Northern Shaanxi, China, to realize the comprehensive treatment of goaf and CBSW. The results show that: (1) The rheological curve of the fresh MCB slurry is highly consistent with the Herschel-Bulkley (H–B) model, and its fluidity meets the basic requirements of mine backfill pumping. With the addition of FDG and MS, the yield stress, apparent viscosity and thixotropy of MCB slurry increase, while the pseudoplastic index and slump decrease. (2) The strength of MCB develops slowly in the early stage (0∼14 days) and increases rapidly in the later stage (14∼90 days). Except for the ratio of M20F1 and FDG = 0%, the strength of samples at other ratios (at 28 days) is between 6.06∼11.68 MPa, which meets the strength requirement of 6 MPa for coal mine backfill. The addition of MS and appropriate amount of FDG is beneficial to the development of strength. In contrast, MS exhibits a significant improvement in early strength, and FDG has a significant improvement in late-age strength. (3) Corresponding to the compressive strength, the hydration products C–S(A)-H and AFt of MCB are less in the early stage and greatly increased in the later stage. The active substance in FA/CGS will undergo pozzolanic reaction with the MS hydration product CH. The addition of FDG and MS can promote the reaction and increase the amount of hydration product, but in contrast, the promotion effect of FDG is more significant. (4) The amount of heavy metal leaching of MCB meets the requirements of national standards. The hardened MCB has a solidification/stabilization effect on heavy metal elements, which can significantly reduce the amount of heavy metal leaching. The results imply that MCB is a safe, reliable, and eco-friendly solid waste backfill material, and its application is conducive to the coordinated development of coal resource mining and environmental protection.

Coal mining often brings negative impacts to land and eco‐environments. How to quantitatively evaluate this impact at a regional scale, and assess its related influences in mining and nonmining areas ...from an ecological viewpoint is important and a challenge. The Shendong Mining Area (SMA) at the junction region of Shaanxi Province and Inner Mongolia Autonomous region in northern China is a typical semi‐arid region. Remote sensing (RS) and Geographic Information System (GIS) were used to construct an ecosystem service measurement and evaluation index system in a typical high‐intensity coal mining area. Ecological Capital was estimated using remote sensing and statistical data from 2005, 2010 and 2015. The results show that (a) EC distribution has gradually increased from southeast to northwest (with an average annual growth rate of 2.32%); (b) water and soil conservation are the largest among ecosystem service functions, and the EC per unit area for the shrub ecosystem is the highest; and (c) the EC within the SMA grew steadily with an average annual growth rate of 3.09%. We can conclude that under high‐intensity mining, EC has not decreased, and the EC growth rate in some mining areas were even greater than nonmining areas, indicating that underground mining impacts were under tolerable threshold in this region. Through the remote sensing quantitative evaluation model, this article reveals the impact of regional ecological assets under different mining intensity, and provides an important basis for evaluating regional sustainable development and ecological environment management.
La minería en los últimos años se ha convertido en un tema controversial, puesto que por una parte ha beneficiado económicamente al país y a las familias que dependen de esta actividad, pero también ...se ha evidenciado el daño ambiental que las malas prácticas y la poca responsabilidad social han hecho del sector y de la explotación minera una de las más discutidas. Por lo cual, con la presente investigación se exploran los diferentes conceptos, practicas, normas, estadísticas y caracterización del talento humano vinculado al trabajo de la minería de carbón en la provincia de Sugamuxi, caracterizada por ser de vocación minera y por ser la región objeto de estudio en el proyecto macro de caracterización minera. Se considera que, para alcanzar el objetivo de la investigación, se utilizó como instrumento de recolección de información la encuesta ajustada de RELAVE (2002), la cual como es un estudio en proceso se aplicó a 100 trabajadores de las minas de carbón de los municipios de Sogamoso (incluida Morca), Iza y Gameza distribuidos en 21 minas que se encuentran en dichos sectores.

Introduction: Kaolinite, illite, calcite, pyrite and quartz (silica) in coal dust. Coal worker’s pneumoconiosis is the most common occupational disease in Turkey. It is an interstitial lung disease ...that can result in pulmonary fibrosis. Therefore, interstitial changes that are detected radiologically in coal mine workers are considered as coal worker pneumoconiosis. We wanted to share the findings of an interesting patient in a coal mine worker. Case Presentation: A 53-year-old male patient had complaints of dyspnea, chest pain, sweating, malaise and cough for 15-20 days. 30 pack/year smokers and 20 years working in a coal mine. Thorax bt and x-ray showed bilateral widespread ground glass and consolidation areas. In the bronchoalveolar lavage, a large number of macrophages and most of these macrophages contained pigment. Transbronchail biopsy; Multifocal anthracosis areas in interstitium, protrused fibroblastic proliferation foci of alveolar lumen in several areas, lung parenchyma characterized by mild focal interstitial fibroinflammatory thickening. The findings were evaluated nonspecific. The patient left the job and the radiology of the patient recovered almost completely in the control radiograph and thorax bt after 3 months. The patient did not receive any treatment during this time. Conclusion: The patient definitely states that there is no change in his life except for leaving the work. We thought this was a possible hypersensitivity reaction. We observed that he recovered from exposure.
