This paper is concerned with multiple source left branch extraction (LBE) in Serbo-Croatian, where left branch elements of multiple NPs are extracted. It shows that while multiple source LBE is ...possible, it exhibits ordering restrictions. It demonstrates that these locality effects are based on an important fact that has also been noticed on completely different grounds for Case in LBE by 18: left branch elements enter feature-sharing with the elements they modify not in their base position, but after they undergo movement. It argues that the observed locality effects can be accounted for in a system based on 4's proposal that movement is driven by the presence of an uniterpretable (uK) feature on the moving element, as well as 8's proposal that uK disrupts labeling (15).
This paper analyses the vocal and consonant system in the collection of poems On the Other Side of the Streak by Jagoda Kljaić. The language in this literary work is a reflection of the archaic Banija ...idiom, which is no longer spoken, and which the poet activates to preserve it from oblivion. The aim of this paper is to give an overview of the researched linguistic features, compare them with previous scientific knowledge about this and other western Serbian dialects, and complete the picture of the Banija dialect which is an integral part of the Herzegovinian-Krajina dialect.

In the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) system, language codes and language names are defined within the ISO 639 standard. At present, the standard consists of five parts (ISO 639 ...1-5). Infoterm (International Information Centre for Terminology), an organization founded by UNESCO, is responsible for ISO 639-1. ISO 639-2 is the responsibility of the Registration Authority of the Library of Congress in Washington, and ISO 639-3 is the responsibility of SIL International from Dallas, also known as the Summer Institute of Linguistics. SIL International declares certain dialects and subsystems of the Croatian language to be separate Slavic languages, supposedly independent of Croatian, and reduces the scope of the Croatian language, as an individual language, merely to the Štokavian dialect of the modern Croatian standard language. At the same time, it constructs „the Serbo-Croatian macro language“ and encourages the return of this phantom creation as an entity. This paper examines the activities of the SIL International and its approach to the Croatian language. The goal is to identify problematic points and propose scientifically based solutions for them. The paper does not question whether the actions of SIL International are the result of miscommunication and coincidence, or whether they are perhaps a part of a planned action that aims to promote a new geopolitical realignment on our part of the European map, with a Serbo-Croatian shadow over it.
The article explores the problem of purism and the criteria for identification of purist interventions that usually occur after changes of political systems. From a theoretical point of view, the ...article analyzes the definition of purism and discusses the dilemma regarding the existence of a neutral period from the aspect of purism. In that context, it tries to explain why some Croatian linguists denote only some parts of Croatian history as purist. In the first part, the author identifies the problem of the definition of purism and the methodological problems of its observation, while in the second part the article offers a brief comparative overview of perspectives on the need for intervention in the Croatian language in the period 1918 - 1990. The author argues that purism should be assessed according to the degree and methods of removing undesired words from usage, and concludes that partial historical analyses will always result in finding that a particular regime pursued the policy of purism. Therefore, future studies of purism should include elements of comparison and criteria for the evaluation of the policy aggressiveness and of the ideology behind it. Without the latter, linguistic debates on purism, although not intended to qualify certain political regimes, remain primarily indicators of their authors’ political preferences.

This paper provides a brief overview of the history of the Croatian Microscopy Society on the occasion of its 30th anniversary as an independent society and the 40th anniversary of its foundation. ...The overview chronologically details the period of the Society's work as the Section for Electron Microscopy of the Croatian Natural Science Society (1983-1992), followed by its independent activity first as the Croatian Society for Electron Microscopy (1992-2006) and finally as the Croatian Microscopy Society (2006-present). The review concludes with recent trends and policies in the Society's development. The review is an extended excerpt from the opening speech held by the Chair of the 4th Croatian Microscopy Congress and a member of the Society’s board, on the occasion of the Society's anniversary, May 18th 2022.
I argue that certain binding facts from Serbo-Croatian, analyzed as Condition B violations by Despić (2011, 2013), are best captured in terms of specific discourse constraints on coreferential ...pronouns and that such cases have no bearing on the categorial status of the nominal domain in Serbo-Croatian. I show that the availability of clitic and nonclitic pronouns that are coreferential with a possessor antecedent crucially depends on whether the antecedent is a discourse topic or new information focus; this leads me to conclude that such cases are not Condition B violations. I also observe that pronouns in English are subject to identical conditions and conclude that English also has clitic and nonclitic pronouns.
