This paper describes Croatian translations of Beatrix Potter’s works based on bibliographic and peritextual data and provides a comparative analysis of characters’ names and two segments of the ...source text and its translations focusing on the selected tale. Seven different Potter’s books including 27 different stories among themselves have been published in Croatian. There are multiple translations of six stories, four of which have two, and two have three translations. The comparative textual analysis focuses on Croatian translations of The Tale of Peter Rabbit, which is not only the most popular Potter’s tale, but also the most frequently published in Croatian, translated three times. The analysis shows that the translations of characters’ names are mostly domesticated and traceable in retranslations and that there are narrative-semantic shifts in the target texts in comparison with the source text.
Cilj je ovog rada prikaz strukture i sadržaja Knjižnice Svetislava Stančića i, okvirno, njegova Osobnog arhivskog fonda, s popisom Stančićevih autografa.
This article, based on original archival records, presents the direction taken by the student movement in 1971, with exclusive reference to the city of Zadar. In this context, the documentation of ...the State Security Service of the Republican Secretariat for Internal Affairs of the Socialist Republic of Croatia (SDS RSUP SRH) was the principal source. This collection contains numerous notes, observations and conclusions about the activities of Zadar university students as well as of individuals or groups of people from the area who were close to them in terms of fundamental principles. As a result, it is important to point out that the personal files of the actors surveilled during the period of the events that marked the student activities in the crucial moments of the Croatian Spring were produced and maintained by the aforementioned arm of the regime. At the same time, one should note that the mentioned files observed separately are not always absolutely relevant material. However, as a whole, together with other documentation, they create the prerequisites for a deeper intrusion and a more comprehensive analysis of the topic of observation. The approach of this paper is aimed at highlighting the key behaviours of communist repressive bodies, and in this sense, especially of those who were prioritized in attempts to prevent the achievement of student goals.
This study investigates the plural form
uni/une
deriving from the numeral ‘one’ in the Istriot dialect of Sissano. Sissano is located in the Istrian peninsula, an area characterized by high intensity ...of linguistic contact. We argue that the rise of such a peculiar form is indeed induced by contact with Croatian and that
uni/une
is unique in the Italo-Romance domain since, generally, the plural indefinite forms derived from the Latin numeral ‘one’ are pronouns and never occur in attributive position. The use of
uni
/
une
is not attested in the few grammars of Istriot varieties because it is recent and still undergoing a process of grammaticalization. Therefore, we conducted interviews to verify how and to what extent contact with Croatian affects the meaning and the use of
uni/une
in Sissano. We found that this form is mostly used as a quantifier, bearing mainly the meaning ‘a pair of’, ‘one group of’, in the context of
pluralia tantum
and plural dominant nouns. We further observe that this quantifier has achieved a more advanced stage of grammaticalization in the younger generation of speakers than in the older ones. We discuss the role played by
pluralia tantum
as well as by the growing prestige of Croatian in triggering this borrowing and in fostering the grammaticalization process of
uni/une
on its way to become a marker of indefiniteness.
The paper analyses 33 family names and 142 different toponyms from the settlement Dubrava on the Pelješac Peninsula. In the introductory part of the paper, the geographic position of the settlement ...and a short historic overview is given, followed by a short description of the speech of Dubrava, especially the peculiarities in its accentual system which shows systematic deviations from the Neo-Štokavian accentuation system (e.g. falling tone on a noninitial syllable in the present of verbs formed by endings -avati, -ivati and -irati and in loan words). In the central part of the paper, local family names and toponyms are analyzed. In toponymy geomorphological diversity of the area is reflected. The toponyms formed by the Dalmatian adjective san(c)tu(s) – Sutivan and Sutvid are singled out.
Ispit savjesti (Examination of Conscience) occupies a unique place in Ujevis works. It is the junction of his biography, the creative principle of his poetry. In it, the author is testing himself in ...a self-examination and self-analysis exercise with no determined order or plan, in a medium which has no fixed base. Ispit savjesti is the search for coherence, the search for expression and the settling of accounts. This is from where its branched structure flows, which theory would find hard to define with any precision, placing it in the context of hybrid literature, at a crossroads where confession, essay, autobiography, lyricism and mysticism intersect. This paper develops two lines of discussion from this junction, which, in the end, connect in Ujevis essay. On the one hand, it will consider the difficulties in mediating between the subject and the world, and on the other hand, it will point out the contentious places in Ispit savjesti. By following the two lines further, the historical/crisis/critical status of the principles of modernist self-determination will become evident, but so will the inviolable way in which it is deflected in Ujevis soul-searching prose. In this way, the modernist subject will be exposed three-fold in the soul-searching: as a document of the time, as a document of crisis and as a document of criticism.
Andrija Raki (Fuine, November 30, 1870 Rijeka, October 14, 1957) is a Croatian theologian and historian. He worked at the Higher Theological School in Senj as a lecturer of canon law and Church ...history in the period from 1895 to 1902, after which he was appointed pastor in Trsat. During his life, he dealt with the past of monasteries all over the Croatian littoral and the history of the diocese of Senj. Based on archival materials, he wrote several studies from the past of Rijeka, Suak and Trsat, covering the period from the Middle Ages to the nineteenth century. He published works in the magazines Primorske novine and Naa sloga, and he also collaborated in Katoliki list. Along with published titles Church reforms of the French government in the diocese of Senj-Modruka 1809 1813 (1910), From the past of the high school in Suak: on the occasion of the tricentenary (1928), History of the city of Suak (1929), From the past days of the municipality of Lia and Fuina (1946), Contributions to the history of the city of Suak (1947), Notes from the history of the Ladyship of Grobnik (1948). He is also the author of several historical and political articles. This paper will deal with the authors previously unpublished recordings entitled Glagolska sveta misa i njike bojne pomorsko pojesme, probably written in Senj in 1892 and specifically with the second part of the recording, which contains six songs collected in the area of the towns of Senj and Novi Vinodolski.
The article is a contribution to the research of Slovak-Croatian literary and cultural relations. It focuses at the reception of Andrej Sládkovič (1820 – 1872) in the Croatian context. The second ...half of the 19th century is investigated through the analysis of contributions to Croatian literary magazines and newspapers such as Danica, Dragoljub, Vienac, Slavonac and Nada. The analysis of the 20th century and contemporary reception looks at texts published in various magazines, books and anthologies which contain translations by Luko Paljetak, Dubravka Dorotić Sesar and others. Since Sládkovič did not have any personal contacts with Croatian intellectuals of the time, the presence of his work in the 19th century Croatian cultural space was scarce. Wider recognition of his oeuvre came much later and in the late 20th century, it was intensified by the establishment of a Slovak studies programme at the University of Zagreb (as part of Czech studies in 1994 and as a separate programme in 1997). While in the 19th century, period magazines and newspapers – albeit sporadically – do mention Sládkovič, but do not contain any translations of his work, nowadays, translations are available, but are usually only known in the narrow academic circles of (mainly) Slavic studies experts.
It is very popular today to integrate voice interfaces into IoT devices. The pronunciation and proper prosody of speech play a major role in the intelligibility and naturalness of synthesized voices. ...Each language has its own prosodic characteristics. In this paper, we present the results of a study aimed at testing the applicability of methods for modelling and predicting the prosodic features of the Croatian language. The extent to which their performance can be improved by incorporating linguistic features and linguistic peculiarities specific to the Croatian language was investigated. In the model learning process, tree classification was used to predict the lexical stress position and the type of stress in a word, and a lexicon of 1,011,785 word forms was used as the model learning set. Separate models were created for predicting the position and type of lexical stress. The results improved significantly after the rules for atonic words (clitics) were applied. A hybrid approach combining a rule-based approach and a modelling approach was also proposed. The final accuracy of assigning lexical stress using the hybrid approach was 95.3%.
The present study aimed to evaluate acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitory and antioxidant activities of Lamiaceae medicinal plants growing wild in Croatia. Using Ellman's colorimetric assay all ...tested ethanolic extracts and their hydroxycinnamic acid constituents demonstrated in vitro AChE inhibitory properties in a dose dependent manner. The extracts of Mentha x piperita, M. longifolia, Salvia officinalis, Satureja montana, Teucrium arduini, T. chamaedrys, T. montanum, T. polium and Thymus vulgaris at 1 mg/mL showed strong inhibitory activity against AChE. The antioxidant potential of the investigated Lamiaceae species was assessed by DPPH• scavenging activity and total antioxidant capacity assays, in comparison with hydroxycinnamic acids and trolox. The extracts differed greatly in their total hydroxycinnamic derivatives content, determined spectrophotometrically. Rosmarinic acid was found to be the predominant constituent in most of the investigated medicinal plants (by RP-HPLC) and had a substantial influence on their AChE inhibitory and antioxidant properties, with the exception of Teucrium species. These findings indicate that Lamiaceae species are a rich source of various natural AChE inhibitors and antioxidants that could be useful in the prevention and treatment of Alzheimer's and other related diseases.
