Background- Antenatal depression is affecting 10% pregnant women worldwide with higher prevalence in developing countries. This causes poor maternal and foetal outcome and also affects cognitive ...development of the child. Aim and objective: To estimate magnitude of antenatal depression and its risk factors. Methodology- A cross-sectional survey was done at the antenatal clinic of community health department catering to an urban resettlement colony, East Delhi. Estimated sample size was 216 (including 10% non-response rate). Pregnant women attending the ANC clinic from October 2019 to February 2020 were enrolled. EPDS questionnaire was used to assess depression during pregnancy. Results-The antenatal depression was found in 11.8% subjects as per EPDS score. Working female and belonging to Muslim religion, past history of abortion, complications in previous pregnancy, financial debt, physical violence and substance use in family showed significant association with antenatal depression. Conclusion –Depression was prevalent among antenatal women and was found to be associated with various risk factors.
Introduction: Postnatal depression (PND) is a common psychiatric disorder and is considered a serious public health issue. It is diagnosed in about 50% of the women during first year after delivery. ...Objective: To assess the prevalence of PND and study the associated risk factors. Materials and Methods: The study was conducted in government Obstetrics & Gynecology Hospital in Khammam, Telangana from September 2016 to March 2017. A total of 150 women after delivery were included in the study. A semi structured proforma for socio-demographic details and the Edinburg Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) for screening for depressive symptoms were used to collect data from women between 1st and 8th postpartum weeks. Institutes ethics committee approval was taken and consent taken from study participants. Results: Prevalence of PND was 24%. PND showed significant association with primiparous women, husband’s occupation, unplanned pregnancy and women who preferred male child but gave birth to a female child. Conclusion: PND screening should be an integral part of postnatal care, so that they are counseled early, thereby preventing future complications.
Introduction: Postpartum depression is a serious temperamental and mental disorder. This condition seems to be affected by vitamins and minerals. Given the immediate effects of this disorder, the ...mother's inability to carry out maternal care, and the risks of suicide and infanticide and given that vitamin D receptors and hydroxylase enzymes are present in different regions of the brain, including amygdala this study was performed to determine the effect of vitamin D on postpartum depression treatment. Methods: This case-control study was carried out in 2014 in Shahid Beheshti Hospital of Isfahan, Iran, on women who had given birth 30 days earlier. Depression was assessed using the Edinburg Questionnaire. The data were analyzed in SPSS, version 20, using independent t-test (to investigate age variable), Mann-Whitney U test (to examine the frequency distribution of education level), Pearson correlation, and Chi-square test (to investigate the frequency distribution of the route of delivery). P-value less than 0.05 were considered significant. Results: The mean serum level of vitamin D showed a significant reduction in the case group as compared to that in the control group (P<0001). In other words, there was a significant relationship between the serum level of vitamin D and postpartum depression. Conclusion: As the findings indicated, postpartum depression was associated with the deficiency of vitamin D. regarding this; the use of vitamin D supplements during the prenatal period can be a proper way to prevent this disease.
Objectives: To adapt the Edinburgh Cognitive and Behavioral screen (ECAS) English version into Persian. Methods: The ECAS test was adapted and implemented to 30 ALS patients and 31 healthy volunteers ...in Tehran, Iran. The ECAS results were compared to MoCA and ALS-FRS-r, the other standard tools to determine whether the translated version is reliable and valid in the new language. In addition, the patients' caregivers were interviewed for behavioral and psychiatric changes. Results: The Persian version of ECAS revealed high internal consistency (α = 0.791), alongside the strong correlation of ECAS and its subscales with MoCA and ALS-FRS. Moreover, Persian ECAS discriminated against the patients and the healthy population well. Sensitivity analysis revealed promising results of Persian ECAS with an area under the curve of 0.871 in ROC curve analysis. Cognitive impairment was observed in 43.33% of patients. Conclusion: The Persian version of the ECAS, exclusively designed for the Iranian population, is the first screening tool to assess multiple neuropsychological functions, which provides a rapid and inclusive screen of cognitive and behavioral impairments specifically in ALS patients.

The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the public health measures introduced to control it, on mental health, is largely unknown. Research conducted during past epidemics found that pregnant women ...are more vulnerable psychologically. The aim of this study was to investigate antenatal depressive and anxiety symptoms during this pandemic in Greece.
All women receiving routine antenatal care, during a three-month period, starting one week after the total lockdown in Greece, in a University department, were asked to fill in two questionnaires, the Edinburg Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) and the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI).
Overall, 505 women (93.3% of the eligible population) agreed to participate. The prevalence of antenatal depression (EPDS score≥13) in the population of the study was 13.5%. Unplanned pregnancy (OR: 2.447; 95% CI: 1.235-4.846), smoking (OR: 2.268; 95% CI: 1.166-4.411) and antenatal anxiety (OR: 5.074; 95% CI: 2.898-8.883) increased the risk of antenatal depression during the COVID-19 pandemic. State (current)-anxiety affected 34.1% of the participants, whereas Trait (lifetime)-anxiety affected 15.8%. The State-anxiety score (median) was significantly higher than the Trait-anxiety (median) (41 vs. 36; p<0.001), revealing an increase in the levels of anxiety in the pandemic, while there was also a positive linear correlation between the two scales (rho=0.592; p<0.001).
The unprecedented situation of the COVID-19 pandemic has increased anxiety, but not depression levels of pregnant women in Greece. Population level interventions to address adverse effects on anxiety status in the initial phases of similar situations may be helpful in the future.
The aim: To assess the possibility of using a questionnaire and determining the Ankle Brachial Index(ABI) for early diagnosis of asymptomatic ischemia of the lower extremities in patients with ...various somatic diseases.
Materials and methods: The study involved 294 patients who were receiving inpatient treatment at Communal Non-Profit Enterprise «Uzhgorod Central City Clinical Hospital»,Communal Non-Profit Enterprise «Transcarpathian Regional Clinical Hospital» and Communal Non-Profit Enterprise «Uzhgorod District Clinical Hospital». The study was conducted in 36 patients of pulmonological, 52 - neurological, 22 - endocrinological, 28 - rheumatological, 67 - general therapeutic and 89 - surgical patients. In order to detect hidden ischemia, the patients were surveyed according to the Edinburg questionnaire, regional systolic pressure was measured on the tibial arteries of the lower extremities and calculation of the Bone-humerus index (ABI)at rest and after physical exertion (walking), also non-contact skin temperature was measured on the lower leg and thigh.
Results: During the study, (ABI) less than 0.9 was found in 108 (36.7%) patients, while in 47 (43.5%) cases, (ABI) decreased only after exercise. In the majority of cases, 98 (90.7%) a decrease in (ABI) was observed on one lower limb. A decrease in the skin temperature of the lower extremities was observed in 141 (48%) patients, 134 (95.1%) of which were diagnosed with diabetes.Symptoms of hidden ischemia, according to the questionnaire, were found in 99 (33.7%) patients.Smoking was observed in 61 (56.5%) patients with symptoms of hidden ischemia.
Conclusions: As a result of our study, it was found that the specificity of the Edinburg questionnaire in detecting the preclinical stage of ischemia of the lower extremities reaches 88.2%, and the sensitivity - 91.6%. The obtained results indicate the expediency of using the questionnaire in the complex of diagnostics of vascular pathology in patients of various profiles. False-negative results of(ABI)in people with diabetes are associated with mediacalcinosis. In such cases, it is necessary to assess the state of blood flow by measuring the pressure on the back of the foot after physical exertion.
Although postnatal depression (PND) is a worldwide public health problem, it is relatively higher in developing countries, including countries in Sub-Saharan Africa. Postnatal depression is not ...routinely screened for in primary healthcare facilities in South Africa, despite its reported compromise on mother and child health. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of, as well as factors associated with, postnatal depression in a sample of clinic attendees in a sub district in Tshwane, South Africa. A quantitative and cross-sectional survey was conducted in a sample of 406 women in three healthcare facilities. The Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) was used to collect data from women who had infants between the ages of 0 and 12 months. The cut-off point for the EPDS for the depressed category was a score of 13 out of a maximum of 30. The majority of the women (57.14%,
= 232) had scores of 13 and above, which is indicative of postnatal depressive symptoms. On logistic regression, postnatal depressive symptoms were significantly associated with lack of support in difficult times (
< 0.001, 95% CI 10.57-546.51), not having the preferred sex of the baby (
= 0.001, 95% CI 0.37-0.58), low household income (
< 0.001, 95% CI 1.23-1.67), and an older baby (
= 0.005, 95% CI 1.21-1.49). The results show the high proportion of women who have postnatal depression but remain undiagnosed and untreated, and therefore confirm the need for routine screening for postnatal depressive symptoms in primary healthcare facilities, which are used by the majority of women in South Africa.
