Il fenomeno della Brexit ha portato diversi cambiamenti, di natura sia politico-sociale sia linguistica. Dal 2012, anno della creazione del neologismo, da questo termine ne sono stati coniati diversi ...altri, atti a definire i protagonisti e le implicazioni di tale evento. Questo studio si concentra su tre composti – hard Brexit, soft Brexit e smooth Brexit – che designano tre possibili realizzazioni dell’uscita del Regno Unito dall’Unione Europea. Lo scopo è quello di confrontare le definizioni di tali termini fornite da due glossari istituzionali, quello del Parlamento inglese e quello del Parlamento europeo – entrambi denominati Brexit Glossary, con le definizioni reperite nel Brexit Corpus, un corpus giornalistico di testi raccolti dal web e disponibile sulla piattaforma SketchEngine. I dati dimostrano che le definizioni dei tre termini analizzati non sono completamente coerenti e che i processi che descrivono non sono del tutto trasparenti e chiari agli utenti.

The explanation is given of how ...terms-eponyms enter into industry-specific terminology. The view points of Russian and foreign terminologists on eponyms in a scientific and technical terminology and the functions which eponyms perform are presented. Models of formation for eponymic terminological combinations are analyzed, their structure and composition are examined. The phenomena of abbreviation and polysemy in the described terminology are defined
The article is devoted to the study of synonymy in English terminology on television. Different approaches to the problem of synonymy in scientific terminology are considered. The author analyzes ...different categories of terms-synonyms. In this paper, synonymous rows are analyzed in accordance with the length of the row. A distinctive feature of the English terminology of television is the predominance of synonymous rows with two terms in their composition. The revealed regularities of the studied terminology should be taken into account by specialists of this subject area, linguists-translators and terminographers providing the collection and processing of professionally-oriented material
In the last decades, the focus of ESP teaching has been shifting from the grammatical analysis of technical texts to discourse analysis, and, more recently, to learner-centred approaches. This change ...is quite challenging and demanding for ESP teachers, in particular regarding the choice of effective teaching and learning methodologies and, consequently, the design of meaningful activities. Furthermore, it is also relevant to rethink educational processes to meet the students’ needs, in particular given the unceasing digital transformation and its societal impact. In this scenario, the ubiquity of mobile-assisted language learning (MALL) was integrated in the design of a teaching and learning strategy, by using an Electronic Classroom Response System (CRS) within a game-based activity to learn Business English Terminology (BET). The activity was first tested in academic year 2014/15, with students enrolled in a Management undergraduate degree at ESTGA – University of Aveiro. Given the results of a preliminary study, the authors decided to undertake an empirical diachronic research (3 academic years), aiming at verifying if the game-based MALL strategy using a CRS promoted the students’ learning success in what concerns i) the identification and use of business English (BE) acronyms and other abbreviations, and ii) the accurate integration of BET in written text. The teaching materials were validated by two former Management students and two specialists (one in ESP and another in English Didactics). A total of 67 students participated in this study and the results of the statistical data analysis – using Pearson’s correlation coefficient and the Friedman test – confirm that the strategy supports the study of BE acronyms and other abbreviations, but their accurate integration in written text needs further study.
The article is devoted to the actual task of creating learners’ dictionaries. It defines the general objectives in creating of such dictionaries as well as the principles of their formation, namely ...the harmonization of concepts in different languages and the availability of definitions for a deeper understanding of the term semantics. The authors analyze English terminology of physics in terms of some of its characteristics influencing the process of assimilation by students. They distinguish terminological difference in features for IT-specialty being a new scientific field. The examples of dictionaries for physicists and IT-specialists are provided.
This study examined the relationship between the use of vocabulary learning strategies and self-efficacy in medical English learning, and whether after an initial six-week course to master the basics ...of medical terminology, those with higher use of vocabulary learning strategies and those with a higher degree of self-efficacy would have significant score improvements in the medical English proficiency. Second-year medical students (N = 115; M age = 19.6, SD = 0.5; 82 men, 33 women) participated in the study. A one-group pretest-posttest design was used. Measures included medical English tests, the English Vocabulary Learning Strategies Survey (EVLSS), and the English Learning Self-Efficacy Scale (ELSES). Results showed that there was no significant correlation between vocabulary learning strategies and English learning self-efficacy. In addition, as a whole, vocabulary learning strategies and self-efficacy significantly predicted students’ score improvements in medical English proficiency.
Previous studies have shown that in translations of the New Testament into some old Germanic languages, there is a different usage of the term relative to “married woman, wife”, depending on whether ...the reference is to Virgin Mary, on the one hand, or any other married woman, on the other. As an explanation for this terminological difference in the translations into different Germanic languages, we highlight the need to linguistically acknowledge the perpetual virginity of Mary. Along similar lines, the aim of this article is also to analyze the terms used in the translations of the New Testament into different dialects of Old English to refer to Virgin Mary as a married woman, comparing them with the ones used in same texts to refer to other women in the same condition, in order to verify if Virgin Mary receives a different treatment when she is referred to as wife.
Trees and woodland, and their products, were of considerable significance to the daily lives of the Anglo-Saxons. The usefulness of these as a resource was counter-balanced by the threat posed to the ...human community by the wildness of forests; both natural dangers from wolves and other animals, and the refuge that forests offered to the lawless and dispossessed. The tree and woodland imagery of the vernacular poetry of the period shows how the Anglo-Saxons used both aspects within the texts to develop ideas and concepts that go beyond the physical realities of not only the resources obtained from trees, but also the woodland as a feature of the landscape around them. Analysis of the vocabulary used reveals a differentiation between the application of two of the terms for woodland, holt and weald. As a holt, in the form of metaphorical forests composed of spears, the landscape can protect the human community as well as threaten it. The forest which, practically speaking, is outside the confines of society becomes, by the use of weald in the poetry, a vehicle for conveying the concept of the boundaries of normality.
