In post–cold war Europe, international institutions associated with an earlier era of U.S. hegemony in the Western hemisphere continue to exist and in some cases are playing a significant role in ...managing a broad array of challenges. New institutions are also being created to manage new challenges. The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) may be the most visible example. On 29 May 1990, forty states and two European organizations signed articles of agreement to establish this new institution, whose declared purpose is “to foster the transition towards open market-oriented economies and to promote private and entrepreneurial initiative in the Central and Eastern European countries committed to and applying the principles of multiparty democracy, pluralism, and market economies.”
This article examines regional development banks and their relationship with the World Bank. Specifically, the article analyzes the roles of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the European ...Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), and the factors that have influenced the creation of these international financial institutions. Most of the literature examines regional development banking practices and development strategies as if all regional banks were the same. However, the missions of the IDB and the EBRD are quite distinct. While the IDB primarily provides social sector loans to nation-states, the EBRD primarily provides private sector loans for finance and business development. Given that Latin America and the former Soviet Union share many of the same economic, political and social problems, it is surprising that these institutions are so different. What accounts for the different missions of these regional banks? We find that the influence of borrowing and non-borrowing member states in the creation of these banks can help explain some of the differences between the IDB and the EBRD.

Faced with the financial crisis, the institution is increasing its business volume in the countries of Eastern Europe, the Caucasus, and Central Asia to levels not reached for the last 20 years. In addition, the EBRD is expanding its area of operation towards North Africa as a result of the Arab Spring. From the point of view of our companies, this expansion, along with the need to find foreign markets due to the lengthening of the economic and financial crisis in Spain, represents a unique opportunity to increase Spanish participation in the EBRD's projects, investments and tenders.

Abstract
The Shelter enclosing the wrecked Chernobyl Unit 4 reactor continues to deteriorate posing an increasing environmental threat due to structural degradation and the ingress of water. The ...uncertain nature of the wreckage within the Shelter combined with structural instability and high radiation fields make the remediation a very challenging task. A decision-based approach known as the Shelter Implementation Plan (SIP) has been adopted as a way of resolving the many difficulties. This plan has the financial support of more than 20 nations under the Chernobyl Shelter Fund (CSF) which is administrated by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). Project execution will pose a number of unique problems in technology, project management, contracting, nuclear regulation and risk management.
