To evaluate overall upper eyelid laxity according to age and sleep position.
This single-center prospective study was conducted on healthy subjects between 20 and 89 years of age and was approved by ...the institutional review board and the ethics committee. Data collected were age, sex, weight and height, ophthalmological history, general history (diabetes, hypertension, smoking) and preferred sleep position (lateral, ventral, dorsal decubitus or no preference). Overall upper eyelid laxity was measured using the McNab technique.
In total, 280 patients were included in the study - 40 per 10-year age bracket. Mean overall right eyelid laxity was measured at 5.35mm (5.38mm on the left) between 20 and 29 years old and 8.28mm (8.43mm on the left) between 80 and 89 years old. 161 patients slept in a lateral decubitus position. Median overall upper eyelid laxity for the sleep side was 8mm vs. 7mm for the non-sleep side.
Overall upper eyelid laxity increased significantly with age (P<0.001) and compared to the contralateral side (P<0.001). Overall upper eyelid hyperlaxity can be defined as a measurement (by the McNab technique) greater than: 7mm between 20 and 29 years, 8mm between 30 and 39 years, 9mm between 40 and 69 years and 10mm between 70 and 89 years. This study provides new data on normal eyelid laxity in the general population according to age and sleep position.
To assess the role of nuclear factor kappa-B (NFKB) in cutaneous specimens of rosacea and unaffected tissue.
Immunohistochemical staining was performed for the activated, phosphorylated variant of ...NFKB (pNFKB) in eyelid specimens of rosacea (n = 12) and normal, healthy tissue (n = 12). The numbers of positively staining cells/40× microscopic field were counted across 5 consecutive fields. Additionally, quantitative Western blotting was carried out for pNFKB and NFKB in specimens of rosacea (n = 15) and normal controls (n = 14). Statistical comparisons were performed via a dedicated software package.
The mean number of cells/40× microscopic field that stained positively for pNFKB was 18.4 (standard deviation = 15.3) for control patients and 39.3 (standard deviation = 16.9) for rosacea patients, and the difference between the 2 groups was statistically significant (P = .0024). On Western blotting, the mean ratios of pNFKB:NFKB for control and rosacea patients measured 0.58 (standard deviation = 0.81) and 3.11 (standard deviation = 3.53), respectively. The 2 groups were statistically significantly different (P = .0002).
The activated form of NFKB is enriched in rosacea, indicating a role for this pathway in the pathogenesis of this disease. Interference with NFKB signaling may represent a novel therapy for rosacea as clinical agents become available. The periocular area is one of the first and most noticeable areas affected by ageing. Common signs of lower lid ageing include rhytids, prominent eye bags caused by prolapse of orbital fat pads, ...increased lid laxity leading to lid malpositioning, and deepening of tear troughs, all of which give a sunken aged appearance. Lower lid transcutaneous blepharoplasty can correct most of these problems providing excellent long-term aesthetic outcomes with minimal downtime for the patient. However, lower eyelid anatomy is complex, and a thorough understanding of its structure and function is needed to avoid serious complications such as lid malpositioning and blindness. In this review, we present the anatomy of the lower lid and useful surgical techniques to circumvent and avoid such complications.
A newborn male with cat eye syndrome presented with progressively worsening bilateral upper eyelid imbrication, floppy eyelids, and ptosis. Despite conservative management, he remained unable to open ...his eyelids. Surgical correction was planned to prevent bilateral sensory deprivation amblyopia and was delayed until 5 months of age due to systemic health concerns. Bilateral full-thickness wedge excision and frontalis suspension with silicone rods in a double rhomboid fashion was performed. Postoperatively, the patient demonstrated spontaneous eyelid opening, resolution of spastic eversion of the upper eyelids, and adequate eyelid closure. The authors present the first case of concurrent floppy eyelid syndrome and upper eyelid imbrication reported in a cat eye syndrome patient.
This study investigates the efficacy, healing efficiency, and safety of skin orbicularis oculi muscle combined with tissue flap repair for eyelid trauma patients. According to the different methods ...of surgical intervention, this study chooses 78 cases of eyelid injury patients. This study sets up the joint intervention group and the routine repair group, including the joint intervention group adopting the orbicularis oculi muscle skin of composite tissue flap to repair surgery. The routine repair group is treated by conventional repair skin flap transfer operation. Spearman correlation coefficient is used to analyze the correlation between postoperative healing of eyelid trauma patients and quality of life (SF-36) and self-image satisfaction (BIS) scale scores. The surgical intervention of skin orbicularis oculi muscle combined with tissue flap for patients with eyelid trauma has a better plastic repair effect in clinical practice. It can also effectively reduce the risk of postoperative complications, which is conducive to improve the postoperative quality of life and self-image satisfaction of patients.
