Kad me je prijateljica Zrinka Pešorda Vardić obavijestila da je hrvatska historiografija ostala bez dr. sc. Ivice Goleca (Petrinja, 23. travnja 1943 – Petrinja, 13. kolovoza 2017), uvaženog člana ...Matice hrvatske, ali i dobrog čovjeka, bio sam istodobno i iznenađen i tužan. Premda sam iz komunikacije s njim znao da je teško bolestan, a iz glasa prilikom posljednjeg razgovora za zadnje uskršnje blagdane osjetio da mu nije dobro i da mu je teško, nadao sam se da taj razgovor neće biti posljednji te da će još biti prilike da se čujemo. Nažalost, to se nije ostvarilo.
U ljeto 2017. napustio nas je jedan dragi čovjek, humanist, prepun razumijevanja za ljude u svojoj okolini, jednom riječju dobar čovjek, Ivica Golec.
Mar. 13--BELLOWS FALLS -- Bellows Falls trustees are still wondering whether to sell a piece of land by Darby Hill Road, even though it is no longer a potential tax liability to the village. The land ...was appraised at about $62,000, according to Village President Charlie Jarras, but Jarras thinks they can get a lot more for it. Jarras figured they could get at least $84,000 if they were to auction it off. That has to change," Jarras said on Friday. "We need to start thinking out of the box." Not everyone is convinced selling the forested property is a good idea.
Coming out of Dracut High, Peter Nickerson received "a few letters" from coaches at Division 3 schools. When Ken Harring was coach at St. Anselm, he briefly spoke to Nickerson about pitching there. ...Whenever Hank Golec attended a UMass Lowell game at LeLacheur Park while Nickerson was in high school, he would see Nickerson there watching. "I could tell that's where he really wanted to play," says Golec. As a freshman in 2004, Nickerson pitched eight games in relief, without registering a decision. The following season, after Harring became UMass Lowell's head coach, Nickerson was penciled into the starting rotation. What has happened since is well-documented in the UMass Lowell record book. The 6-foot-1, 202-pound Nickerson, who at Dracut High also wrestled (at 135 pounds as a senior) and played football, comes from an active family. He has two brothers at Greater Lowell Tech -- Tim, a senior baseball player, and Dan Frederick, a sophomore wrestler. His sister Catherine, now a freshman at UMass Lowell, ran track and played soccer at Dracut High.
The bid from Trumbull-Nelson Construction in Hanover, N.H., was $6.4 million, well below the other companies vying for the project, according to Peter Golec of Rockingham's facilities committee. ...Ingram Construction in West Swanzey, N.H., Baybutt Construction in Keene and All Seasons Construction in Springfield, Vt., also submitted bids, Golec said. Construction is planned for the third week of April, though some permits at Central Elementary are still needed, Golec said. Jan. 16--ROCKINGHAM -- The Bellows Falls Middle School is in need of some electrical upgrades, and this March, the Rockingham school board will likely ask residents to approve borrowing an estimated ...$275,000 for the work. Some of the original wiring in the 70-plus year-old building has never been reworked and become strained after an elevator was added in the 1990s. The lights have been known to dim or even blow out when the elevator runs, Russ Capron said.
Sep. 11--BELLOWS FALLS -- A week after town selectmen recognized a union effort among town hall employees, the Bellows Falls trustees will meet Tuesday at 7 p.m. to consider allowing the village ...police force to unionize. "I don't blame them," Trustee Stefan Golec said. "They've got to think about the future and job security. From the trustees' standpoint, we're looking at reappraisal and an uncertain future. We're going to have to do something. "This year, it's really going to hit home," Golec said. "It's going to be a reality check for some people as to what's a necessity and what's not a necessity." A union, however, won't protect job cuts, Golec said.
Haskell House Painting of Bellows Falls earned the right to complete various painting projects, including two classrooms at the Saxtons River Elementary School for $3,175. The only other bidder for ...this project was King's Quality Painting, which submitted a bid of $10,774. Three bidder's vied for the Bellows Falls Middle School electric study project with Dufresne-Henry of Springfield coming out on top at $1,650. The next lowest bid was from Dubois & King, Inc. for $3,600, and the third bid from WV Engineering Associates was for $3,800. Williams Fence Co. of Weathersfield was awarded the contract for the Saxtons River school fence project with the lowest bidder of $4,470. New England Fence submitted a bid for $4,750 and Springfield Fencing offered to do the job for $4,875.
Stan Golec (pictured) had just finished his medical training and was ready to start a new career in his native Poland when he took an extended vacation to Michigan to visit relatives. It turned out ...to be far more extended than he'd planned.
After meeting in executive session on Tuesday night, the select board voted 3-1 to appeal. Selectmen Ann DiBernardo, Tom MacPhee and Leslie Goldman voted in favor of the appeal while Selectman Stefan ...Golec was the lone vote against. "To me, it's about structure," Goldman said on Wednesday. "Everyone in town hall is accountable to the town manager except the clerk and (assistant town clerk)." The assistant town clerk is hired by, and reports directly to, the town clerk, an elected official. Because the town doesn't have any managment authority over the assistant clerk, selectmen said the position can't be defined as a "municipal employee" eligible for union membership. During January's budget process, the assistant clerk was one of four jobs slated to be scaled back from full time to part time. Rockingham employees and residents, including Town Clerk Doreen Aldrich, lobbied the board to restore the hours. Eventually, the select board agreed to keep three of the positions full time, including the assistant town clerk.
