Während auf dem Areal des ehemaligen KZ Mauthausen wenige Jahre nach der Befreiung eine Gedenkstätte entstand, verschwand das KZ Gusen, nur drei Kilometer von Mauthausen entfernt, nahezu völlig aus ...dem öffentlichen Bewusstsein – es wurde geschliffen. Der Audioweg in Gusen ist ein Kunstprojekt des in St. Georgen an der Gusen aufgewachsenen und in Berlin lebenden Künstlers Christoph Mayer mit dem Titel „Das unsichtbare Lager“. Auf einem ca. 2,5 Kilometer langen Weg, der teilweise durch die Wohnsiedlung führt, vermittelt es nicht nur Informationen zu den Konzentrationslagern Gusen I und II, sondern greift auch die Nachgeschichte und den Umgang mit diesen Orten auf. Der Beitrag über den Audioweg diskutiert Geschichtsvermittlung qua Medien und weist auf neue Wege hin, um den Umgang mit NS-Geschichte zu reflektieren.
„Europa in Mauthausen" stellt erstmals umfassend die Geschichte der Überlebenden eines nationalsozialistischen Konzentrationslagers dar. Diese beruht auf einer einmaligen Sammlung von über 850 ...lebensgeschichtlichen Interviews mit Überlebenden aus ganz Europa, Israel, Nord- und Südamerika.Der erste Band präsentiert einen Überblick über das Lager und die Mauthausen-Forschung; er konzentriert sich einleitend auf methodologische Überlegungen und makropolitische Zusammenhänge. Die Beiträge zeigen, dass dem nationalsozialistischen Lagersystem in hohem Maße eine ‚Funktion‘ in den Besatzungs- und Verfolgungspolitiken des NS-Regimes (und der kollaborierenden Länder) zukam.
During the archival study of the rich legacy of Prof. Józef Kostrzewski carried out by the author, a ready-to-be-published manuscript by Kazimierz Gelinek (1946) in Polish and English was found. It ...describes his archaeological activities 1940-45 as a prisoner at Mauthausen-Gusen, one of the most severe German Nazi concentration camps. Gelinek, a geographer and pre-war grammar school teacher with extensive archaeological field and museum practice in the Płock region, was ordered by the camp commanders first to form the excavation brigade of prisoners in order to examine several sites in the vicinity of the camp (the archaeologically rich region of Upper Danube valley), then to organize a small archaeological museum in one of the camp barracks and finally – to prepare a monograph of the excavated area that was handed to Heinrich Himmler, chief of the SS and Gestapo and an enthusiastic amateur of archaeology, during his visit
Since summer 1944, because of its western location - in significant distance to the front - Mauthausen, including its subcamps, became one of the main destinations for deportation and evacuation ...transports. As a result, the number of prisoners in the Mauthausen concentration camp complex grew significantly, and the living conditions in the camp deteriorated substantially. Thus, prisoners who reached Mauthausen during this late period of the war often found considerably worse living conditions than prisoners who arrived earlier. Using the example of the Jewish prisoners from Hungary the paper analyses the last period of Mauthausen, describes the daily life especially in the tent camp, in Gunskirchen and in the subcamps of Mauthausen, and discusses how the changed living conditions effected the chances for survival. Based on narrative interviews and protocols that were recorded immediately after the war the paper questions the image of a homogenous camp history and points to the plurality of camp experiences during the last months of the war.
Der vorliegende Aufsatz befasst sich mit dem Prähistoriker Kurt Willvonseder, der bald nach dem „Anschluss“ Österreichs an das Deutsche Reich der SS und NSDAP beigetreten war und in das Ahnenerbe der ...SS aufgenommen wurde. In den darauffolgenden Jahren machte er im Bereich der österreichischen Denkmalpflege Karriere und war im Rahmen dieser Tätigkeiten unter anderem an archäologischen Ausgrabungen rund um das KZ-Nebenlager Gusen beteiligt. Auf Grund seiner Stellung im Ahnenerbe war er in dieser Zeit auch in Südosteuropa eingesetzt, wo er einerseits wissenschaftlich tätig und andererseits im Sinne der nationalsozialistischen „Volkstumspolitik“ beschäftigt war. Nach 1945 für kurze Zeit interniert und aus sämtlichen Ämtern entlassen, konnte er seine wissenschaftliche Karriere spätestens ab 1950 wieder aufnehmen und wurde in der Folge Direktor des renommierten SMCA (Salzburger Museum Carolino Augusteum) und Lehrender am Historischen Institut der 1962 wiedergegründeten Universität Salzburg. Ziel dieses Beitrags ist es, Willvonseders Werdegang anhand der Institutionen und Organisationen, mit denen er in Verbindung stand, aber auch seiner Kollegen im Bereich der Ur- und Frühgeschichte darzustellen und daraus ein möglichst vollständiges Bild einer wissenschaftlichen Karriere nach dem nationalsozialistischen System zu zeichnen, das untrennbar mit seiner Tätigkeit während der NS-Zeit verbunden war. Ein besonderes Augenmerk liegt dabei auf den Willvonseder betreffenden Entnazifizierungsmaßnahmen. Diese biographische Analyse stützt sich hauptsächlich auf archivalische Originalquellen aus dem entsprechenden Zeitraum. This paper examines the life of the Austrian prehistorian Kurt Willvonseder. When Austria became part of the German "Reich", Willvonseder joined the SS, NSDAP and the SS-Ahnenerbe. During the following years, he made a career within the field of monument conservation. In the framework of his professional activities, Willvonseder was involved in archaeological excavations in the area of the Gusen concentration camp. Due to his function within the SS Ahnenerbe he was also deployed to occupied areas in southeastern Europe, where he was involved in forced relocations, aiming to realize the national socialist idea of ethnic settlement zones. After 1945, having been held prisoner for some months and dismissed from his posts, he was able to resume his scientific career around 1950. Soon he became curator of the prestigious SMCA (Salzburger Museum Carolino Augusteum). Some years later he was also hired as the first lecturer in history at Salzburg's newly-founded university. This paper aims to examine Willvonseder's career by means of discussing the relevant institutions and organisations, as well as his colleagues in the field of prehistory. The focus lies on his réintégration into the Austrian scientific community after 1945. The basis for this biographical approach is the analysis of contemporary sources from various archives in Austria and Germany.
A l'espai de temps comprès entre 1936 i 1945 l'Estat espanyol va viure conflictes militars i socials que marcarien el futur per a les generacions futures. Molts espanyols, republicans espanyols, ...després de sortir derrotats de la guerra "incivil" espanyola, es van veure obligats a exiliar-se a França, i amb això van entrar en un nou calvari post-bèl·lic. La seva estada en els camps de refugiats, avantsala dels camps d'extermini nazis, els va portar a la col·laboració amb les autoritats gales. Forçats en la participació en la defensa de la III República francesa acaben, majoritàriament, sent deportats a Mauthausen (Àustria), l'únic camp de concentració nazi de categoria III, i conegut com "el camp dels espanyols", un autèntic escorxador d'éssers humans. A Mauthausen van deixar la seva vida milers d'espanyols, vuit d'ells naturals de Constantí. Aquest és un petit tribut a la seva memòria, i complint el jurament de presoners supervivents, un intent d'explicar la veritat i res més que la veritat del que allí va succeir.
In the period of time between 1936 and 1945, the Spanish state experienced military and social conflicts that would mark the future for future generations. Many Spaniards, Spanish republicans, after being defeated in the "uncivil" Spanish war, were forced into exile in France, and with it they entered a new post-war ordeal. Their stay in the refugee camps, before the Nazi death camps, led them to collaborate with the Gallic authorities. Forced to participate in the defense of the III French Republic, they end up, for the most part, being deported to Mauthausen (Austria), the only Nazi concentration camp in Category III, and known as "the Spanish camp", a real slaughterhouse of human beings. Thousands of Spaniards left their lives in Mauthausen, eight of them natives of Constantí. This is a small tribute to his memory, and fulfilling the oath of surviving prisoners, an attempt to tell the truth and nothing but the truth of what happened there.
En el espacio de tiempo comprendido entre 1936 y 1945 el Estado español vivió conflictos militares y sociales que marcarían el futuro para las generaciones venideras. Muchos españoles, republicanos españoles, tras salir derrotados de la guerra "incivil" española, se vieron obligados a exiliarse en Francia, y con ello entraron en un nuevo calvario post-bélico. Su estancia en los campos de refugiados, antesala de los campos de exterminio nazis, les llevó a la colaboración con las autoridades galas. Forzados en la participación en la defensa de la III República francesa terminan, en su mayoría, siendo deportados a Mauthausen (Austria), el único campo de concentración nazi de categoría III, y conocido como "el campo de los españoles", un auténtico matadero de seres humanos. En Mauthausen dejaron su vida miles de españoles, ocho de ellos naturales de Constantí. Este es un pequeño tributo a su memoria, y cumpliendo el juramento de prisioneros supervivientes, un intento de contar la verdad y nada más que la verdad de lo que allí sucedió.
