"It's such a wonderful spot. There's just nothing like it," Ed Hill said. "It was just sad not to see it there." "For whatever reasons it just took a while to get this done," he said. "We're going to ...go forward and be optimistic." "It's gratifying to be able to start again," he said. "It's basically what it was when we rebuilt."
BJ Hill ED McCULLOUGH of Leicester is on the move again, canvassing for messages to bring from Massachusetts residents to their political leaders. Mr. Hill is IT coordinator for Children's Friend and ...other nonprofits in the Worcester area; a children's safety instructor for UMass Memorial Mobile Safety Street; a dog walker for the Worcester Animal Rescue League and a volunteer EMT for the American Red Cross of Central Massachusetts. This is his fourth trek. This morning, I will be dropped off by my friend Jena Hardy of Gardner at the New York-Massachusetts border in Williamstown, in the northwestern corner of the state. I'll begin hiking east, spending the night in North Adams, and winding my way down scenic Route 8 and onto Route 9. I'll pass through Ware and the Brookfields later this week; Worcester and Shrewsbury in the middle of next week; and reach Provincetown at the tip of Cape Cod in three weeks. In total, the 280-mile trip will take me through approximately 70 towns and cities.
The new fiber-to-the-desktop offerings from Verizon and SAIC originate at the data center, where a piece of equipment called an optical-line terminal resides. From this box, fiber-optic cables carry ...light-based communications through distribution hubs, which then split out individual fibers to end users. Each end user has an optical-network terminal, which is about the size of a cable modem, to support a PC and digital telephone. (See how Verizon's Converged Fiber-to-the-Desktop offering works.) The prices for Verizon's Converged Fiber-to-the-Desktop and SAIC's SCS offerings are not available. Verizon says it should have a rough price per desktop by the fall. ``We're looking at the government market. We're looking at maritime. We're looking at any place where the movement of larger and larger amounts of bits is an issue, such as the medical industry," McGaughey says. ``With this technology, you are cutting down on power, space and cooling requirements, plus you're giving a pipe to bring in so much bandwidth that we can hardly fathom it . . . and it's all centrally managed."
