En este artículo presentamos una propuesta metodológica para el estudio de la historia del pensamiento político. Nuestro método tiene en cuenta como criterios interpretativos los textos, contextos y ...marcos en los que se insertan las producciones intelectuales de los autores que las realizan. Consideramos que estos tres criterios informativos nos permiten analizar e interpretar lo que los autores han querido transmitirnos con sus escritos. A modo de ejemplo, discutimos la visión del colonialismo en Karl Marx enfrentando nuestra metodología con la empleada por el crítico literario Edward Said, lo que nos permite atender mejor al dinamismo del pensamiento del alemán y a los cambios en sus consideraciones sobre el colonialismo.
Abstract
Notwithstanding the epistemological problems with the dominant appreciations of human rights, the problem with dominant ways of understanding justice for colonial repression post colonialism ...is that they misplace the logic whence the repression stems. In this paper I propose a revisiting of the historical materialist approach to justice, as a way to strengthen the scholarship on justice in South Africa. I essentially deal with two contending arguments on the debate on justice in South Africa, namely transformative constitutionalism, the position of constitutional romantics, and Azanian political thought, propounded by what are termed constitutional abolitionists in this paper. Moreover, using Bernard Magubane's critical socio-historical explanation of South Africa and Evgeny Pashukanis' legal theory of Marxism, I offer a third way which opens up some of the theoretical deficiencies of transformative constitutionalism as it pertains to South Africa. Ultimately, in this paper, I attempt to move from a descriptive and ideological appreciation of justice, to a conception of justice rooted in the materiality of social relations.
This introduction presents the symposium on Sam Knafo and Benno Teschke’s article in Historical Materialism, ‘Political Marxism and the Rules of Reproduction of Capitalism: A Historicist Critique’ ...(2021). It briefly summarises the foundations of Political Marxism, discusses the broader implications of the debate raised by Knafo and Teschke for questions of collective knowledge-production and methods in Marxist historiography, and outlines the seven contributions of the symposium. The introduction concludes by tracing, through the evolution of debates in Political Marxism and the contributions of its protagonists, some of the lineages of Marxist historiography as well as of the history of this journal.
By referring to the thought of Husain Muruwwa, this study looks at the spiritual dimension of Islam, namely Tasawuf, and how it is being interpreted in terms of a continuous social change. Muruwwa ...–the paper tries to show- is confident that the only authentic approach to interpreting Islam and Tasawuf in terms of social change is historical materialism, which he often calls intellectual Marxism or Realist Socialism. The advantage of this approach, he argues, lies in its ability to rejuvenate the missing intellectual dimension of Islam, but also in its capacity to produce knowledge as well as in establishing the link between the past and the present. The whole idea of the link between the past and the present is associated with his project to formulate what he calls, a new national culture. While believing that Islam can be a vibrant source of the new culture, he treats this religion as a form of culture as such. Hence –this paper shows- Muruwwa’s notion of Islam is quite heterodox since he tries to drag out its theological dimension in order to dig up its social aspects. His view of Tasawuf is equally uncommon. His is the idea that Tasawuf has nothing to do with Islam. It is rather the product of social interaction in a particular society. Being Marxist Moreover, he maintains that the central teaching of the Sufis is not to encourage men to know God but to become God as such.

In this article, a framework is developed to empirically analyse conflicts over land in the context of global crises. This framework aims to overcome the trap of a dichotomous and hierarchical construction of ‘local’ conflicts over land resulting from ‘global’ crises. Building on an action-oriented concept of conflict and a dialectical understanding of structure–agency relations informed by historical materialism, an analytical framework is suggested comprising four dimensions: structures, institutions, agency, and the narratives and meaning making of actors.
Undergirded by the perspective of historical materialism in dialogue with black Marxism and Marxist feminism, this article constructs an account demonstrating the significance of racism to the making ...of modernity. The analytic returns of unthinking Eurocentric sociologies in favour of a more unified historical social scientific approach include the unmasking of the intimate relationship between capitalism, class struggles and racism, particularly how capitalist rule advanced through a process of differentiation and hierarchical re-ordering of the global proletariat. From the 17th-century colonization of Virginia to Victorian Britain and beyond, racism formed an indispensable weapon in the armoury of the state elites, used to contain the class struggles waged by subaltern populations with a view to making the system safe for capital accumulation. Additionally, situating an account of racism within the unfolding story of historical capitalism as against the postcolonial tendency to locate it within the civilizational encounter between the West and the Rest helps make transparent the plurality of racisms, including the racialization of parts of the European proletariat. This explanation of the structuring force of racism and the differentiated ways in which the proletariat has been incorporated into capitalist relations of domination has important implications for emancipatory politics. A race-blind politics risks leaving untouched the injustices produced by historic and contemporaneous racisms. Instead, an alternative approach is proposed, one that invites movements to wilfully entangle demands for economic justice with anti-racism and thereby embrace and demystify the differences inscribed into the collective body of the proletariat by capitalism.
Marx looked at the word “metabolism” as the law which can be found in the natural science field, rather than as the thought of an individual. Marx used this word in three different contexts within ...three areas of study focused on the relations among nature, humans and society. With the development of science and technology, information transformation is a well-known concept and has receives considerable interest. Thus, in the information age, besides metabolism, information transformation plays an important role in the relations among nature, humans and society.
