What does it mean to say that the European Union has a constitution—theoretically, but more importantly, practically? What sort of possibilities such assertion opens for various actors—politicians, ...legal professionals, or the general public? And what is the role of constitutional thinkers in establishing constitutional discourse as the dominant way in which European law is (or was) conceived after 1989? This volume seeks to answer such questions, with a special emphasis on the last one. ‘European Constitutional Imaginaries’ are the central focus of the book. These are sets of ideas and beliefs that help to motivate and at the same time justify the practice of government and collective self-rule established by the constitution (written or unwritten). Such imaginaries are as important as institutions and office-holders. They provide political action with an overarching sense and purpose recognized by those governed as legitimate. The book brings together reflections by lawyers, philosophers, sociologists, or political economists, who shed light on various constitutional imaginaries of Europe. They provide critical intellectual histories of particular legal approaches to European integration, and look behind the language of law to reach deeper insights into the contested history and political economy of Europe. They ask us to think about European law differently.
This book offers a fresh account of one of the remarkable figures in the Renaissance, Giovanni Pico della Mirandola (1463-1494), by focusing on a neglected aspect of his work; his reading of ...scholasticism and its reception in the fifteenth century.
Motivated by the China Health and Nutrition Survey (CHNS) data, a semiparametric latent variable model with a Dirichlet process (DP) mixtures prior on the latent variable is proposed to jointly ...analyse mixed binary and continuous responses. Non-ignorable missing covariates are considered through a selection model framework where a missing covariate model and a missing data mechanism model are included. The logarithm of the pseudo-marginal likelihood (LPML) is applied for selecting the priors, and the deviance information criterion measure focusing on the missing data mechanism model only is used for selecting different missing data mechanisms. A Bayesian index of local sensitivity to non-ignorability (ISNI) is extended to explore the local sensitivity of the parameters in our model. A simulation study is carried out to examine the empirical performance of the proposed methodology. Finally, the proposed model and the ISNI index are applied to analyse the CHNS data in the motivating example.
The library catalog uses authority control to gather topics and works relevant to the search query for improving the accuracy and completeness rate of retrieval results. The personal name is often ...faced with the situation where one person has more than one names or many people have common names. The library uses personal name authority control to help users identify each person entity. With the advent of the Internet generation, users not only search library catalog but also expand their search target to thesis, periodicals or institutional collections. Libraries try to use identity management on personal name authority control - using identifiers to gather all the works of a specific author. This article starts from personal name authority control and identity management including comparing of both. Then introduce the development and application of three types of identifiers, including ISNI (International Standard Name Identifier), ORCID (Open Researcher and Contributor ID), and Wikidata.

Thunder and lightning have been seen from time immemorial as God’s instruments of punishment. Until the invention of the lightning rod by Benjamin Franklin in 1752. In Lightning in the Age of ...Benjamin Franklin. Facts and Fictions in Science, Religion, and Art Jan Wim Buisman shows how the Enlightenment and Romanticism have changed our scientific, religious and artistic image of natural violence forever. In the eighteenth century, thunderstorms are experienced less and less as a threat and more and more as something extraordinary. The image of God and the image of nature changed radically. The religion of enlightened people, for example, was more determined by joy than by fear. And nature was almost experienced as a girlfriend. That had significant consequences because those who no longer had to be afraid of the thunderstorm could play with it without hesitation. That’s what poets, painters and musicians did to their heart’s content. Never before the beauty of the storm was depicted as much in the western culture as during the transition from the Enlightenment to Romanticism.
