Debates about gender are everywhere. Is it an inner identity, a biological fact, or an oppressive system? Should we respect it or resist it? What Even Is Gender? shifts the conversation in a fresh ...direction, arguing that these debates rest on a shared mistake: the idea that there is one thing called "gender" that both sides are arguing about. The authors distinguish a range of phenomena that established vocabulary often lumps together. This sheds light on the equivocations and false dichotomies of "gender" talk, and how they deny many of us the tools to make our needs, experiences, and concerns intelligible to others or even to ourselves. In our paper, we make a brief presentation and contextualization of Schulze's text, of which we present here a translation, “Aphorisms about the absolute”, where he develops, in an ironic style - or, ...in the words of Vieweg, pseudo-ironic -, his critique of the philosophies of identity Schelling and Hegel. In our exposition, we aim to point out, in the first place, how the reception of this text by Schelling and Hegel was quite different - so that it begins to bring their disagreements about philosophy and the philosophical method to the surface, which were hidden before in favor of their adherence to a similar philosophical project in its more general lines. Second, we examine which are the conceptual elements discussed in Schulze's text that would be central to the understanding of this philosophical and methodological divergence between Schelling and Hegel, and which will culminate in their definitive rupture with the publication of the Phenomenology of Spirit - conceptual elements that we believe can be found, particularly, in the treatment of the concepts of form, matter (or content) and determination. More specifically: in the objection raised by Schulze that any conception of the absolute based on the concepts of form and content could only be a relative conception, since not only the distinction between content and form is merely formal, but also any content, thought in its distinction and opposition to form, can only be relative and, therefore, formal content. This criticism, we will conclude, will be decisive for the way in which Hegel will come to think of the absolute not only as a substance, but also as a subject.
Em nosso artigo, fazemos uma breve apresentação e contextualização do texto de Schulze, de que apresentamos aqui uma tradução, “Aforismos sobre o absoluto”, onde ele desenvolve, em um estilo irônico - ou, nas palavras de Vieweg, pseudo-irônico -, a sua crítica às filosofias da identidade de Schelling e de Hegel. Em nossa apresentação, visamos a indicar, em primeiro lugar, como a recepção desse texto por parte de Schelling e de Hegel foi bastante distinta – de modo que começa a forçar a vir à superfície as suas divergências quanto à filosofia e o método filosófico, antes ocultadas a favor de sua adesão a um projeto filosófico semelhante em suas linhas mais gerais. Em segundo lugar, examinamos quais seriam os elementos conceituais discutidos no texto de Schulze que seriam centrais para a compreensão dessa divergência filosófica e metodológica entre Schelling e Hegel, e que culminarão em sua ruptura definitiva com a publicação da Fenomenologia do Espírito – elementos conceituais que acreditamos poder ser encontrados, particularmente, no tratamento dos conceitos de forma, matéria (ou conteúdo) e determinação. Mais especificamente: na objeção, levantada por Schulze, de que toda concepção do absoluto baseada nos conceitos de forma e conteúdo só poderia ser uma concepção relativa, pois não apenas a própria distinção entre conteúdo e forma seria meramente formal, como também qualquer conteúdo, pensado em sua distinção e oposição em relação à forma, só poderá ser, ele mesmo, um conteúdo relativo e, portanto, formal. Essa crítica, concluiremos, será decisiva para o modo com que Hegel passará a pensar o absoluto não mais apenas como substância, mas igualmente como sujeito.

Negro as a Problem for Gender thinks through the
problematizing effects of blackness as, too, a problematizing of
gender. Through the paraontological, the between, and the figure of
the "X" (with its explicit contemporary link to nonbinary and trans
genders) Marquis Bey presents a meditation on black feminism and
gender nonnormativity. Chandler's text serves as both an
argumentative tool for rendering the "radical alternative" in and
as blackness as well as demonstrating the necessarily
trans/gendered valences of that radical alternative. Forerunners is

Do images exist? In this paper I argue that the notion of an image is ontologically empty – i.e., images are no more than a cultural invention akin to epicycles in astronomy. There are only flat ...objects engaged in various causal roles. In this paper I will defend the thesis that in visual culture, in the neurosciences, and in philosophy of mind, there is no convincing evidence in favor of their existence. Moreover, I will outline a series of arguments aiming at showing that images do not exist. I will discuss briefly discuss why many authors – from the iconic turn to the neurosciences – use the notion of image as though it were something real. I will conclude suggesting to drop the subject-object divide and to consider a completely flat ontology made only of (relative) objects.

The “whiteness” of Jews has recently become a popular topic both in public debates and in academic research (Critical Whiteness Studies). Within this discourse, “whiteness” is used as a critical ...concept denoting those who enjoy white privilege in American and other Western societies. However, attributing “whiteness” to Jews is more than controversial, for it assimilates the most persecuted minority in European history to the dominant majority, while downgrading the significance of antisemitism. This is a necessary move in order to reaffirm and critically address the fundamental nature of the black and white divide; however, it is questionable both methodologically and politically.

Despite a growing literature on identity theory in the last two decades, much of its current use in archaeology is still driven toward locating and dating static categories such as ‘Phoenician’, ...‘Christian’ or ‘native’. Previous studies have highlighted the various problems and challenges presented by identity, with the overall effect of deconstructing it to insignificance. As the humanities and social sciences turn to material culture, archaeology provides a unique perspective on the interaction between people and things over the long term. This volume argues that identity is worth studying not despite its slippery nature, but because of it. Identity can be seen as an emergent property of living in a material world, an ongoing process of becoming which archaeologists are particularly well suited to study. The geographic and temporal scale of the papers included is purposefully broad to demonstrate the variety of ways in which archaeology is redefining identity. Research areas span from the Great Lakes to the Mediterranean, with case studies from the Mesolithic to the contemporary world by emerging voices in the field. The volume contains a critical review of theories of identity by the editors, as well as a response and afterward by A. Bernard Knapp.
