Political uncertainty is increasingly seen as important to financial markets. Particularly US presidential election uncertainty is linked to uncertainty regarding future US macroeconomic policy. But ...what is the best vehicle to measure political uncertainty? We examine both the cointegration and causal relationships between the Iowa and Intrade presidential futures markets (IOWA, INTRADE), along with the results of election polls (POLLS); as well as published election predictions of Nate Silver (SILVER), who was arguably the most followed political forecaster during the 2012 presidential election season. We document strong evidence that SILVER and the two prediction markets were all highly cointegrated; while POLLS was not. Consistent with the assertion made by others that INTRADE prices were manipulated in 2012 for non-pecuniary reasons, we also evidence that IOWA and SILVER both Granger-caused INTRADE. Our findings are also consistent with previous findings that election markets outperform polls as prediction vehicles. Overall, while confirming that INTRADE, IOWA and SILVER are cointegrated, we note that the three series consistently differed in the degree of optimism in an Obama victor. These results pose important questions for researchers interested in estimating political uncertainty, and assessing the efficacy of prediction markets and their international integration.
This study examined the effects of theoretical constructs from the theory of planned behavior (TPB) and value-belief-norm theory (VBN) on intentions to perform purchase and disposal behaviors that ...help prevent aquatic invasive species (AIS) spread by organisms-in-trade (OIT) hobbyists. More specifically, the goals of this study were to explore (1) the predictive ability of theoretical constructs on intention to perform desired behaviors and (2) differences in the strength of the constructs on future purchase and disposal behaviors. Regression analyses from survey research conducted at OIT events in the Great Lakes region (n = 542) revealed that VBN constructs have direct, positive effects on likelihood of performing future purchase and disposal behaviors; one TPB construct (perceived behavioral control) also predicted likelihood of performing future disposal behaviors. Seemingly unrelated regression results demonstrate differing effects of theoretical constructs between purchase and disposal behaviors. Findings suggest tailoring messages to target specific behaviors.
This study tests for direct causality between RealClearPolitics (RCP) polling averages and InTrade (IT) share-prices by performing Granger causality tests. These tests are applied to the 2012 U.S. ...presidential election campaign between Barack Obama and Mitt Romney. Three time series are considered in this analysis of causal links between RCP and IT. In all of the estimations, the null hypothesis that IT does not Granger cause RCP cannot be rejected. On the other hand, the null hypothesis that RCP does not Granger cause IT is rejected in a majority of cases. Overall, these results imply that RCP Granger causes IT. While the behavior of participants in prediction markets such as InTrade is informed by political polling, these Granger causality test results suggest that prediction markets add little to what is forecasted by the polls, particularly aggregation polls such as that from RealClearPolitics, regarding the outcome of presidential elections.

For computing the intra-chain excitonic couplings in polymeric systems, here we propose a new fragmentation approach. A comparison for the energetic and spatial properties of the low-lying excited states in PPV between our scheme and full quantum chemical calculations, reveals that our scheme can nicely reproduce full quantum chemical results in weakly coupled systems. Further wavefunction analysis indicate that improved description for strongly coupled system can be achieved by the inclusion of the higher excited states within each fragments. Our proposed scheme is helpful for building the bridge linking the phenomenological descriptions of excitons and microscopic modeling for realistic polymers.
Amaç: Gonartroz diz ekleminde, eklem kıkırdağında başlayan hasar sonucunda eklem hareketinde ağrı, hareket kısıtlılığı ile giden kronik non-enflamatuvar, dejeneratif bir
hastalıktır. Gonartrozda ...hasta eğitimi, istirahat, koruyucu önlemler, farmakolojik, fizik tedavi ve cerrahi tedavi yöntemleri hastalığın evrelerine göre tek başına veya bir arada
kullanılabilmektedir. Eklem içi enjeksiyonlar gonartrozda ağrıyı azaltmada ve fonksiyonel hareketleri arttırmada kullanılmaktadır. Bu çalışmanın amacı diz içine uygulanan
steroid enjeksiyonunun diz ağrısı üzerindeki etkisini değerlendirmektir.
Gereç ve Yöntemler: Ortopedi polikliniğine diz ağrısı ile başvuran ve uzun süreli geçmeyen diz ağrıları olan, radyolojik olarak Kellgreen-Lawrence sınıflamasına göre evre
3-4 gonartrozu olan 108 hastanın 151 dizi çalışmaya dahil edildi. Hastaların kayıtlarından işlem öncesi ve işlem sonrası 6. hafta Visuel Analog skalasına (VAS) ve Sözel Kategori
ölçeğine (SKÖ) göre ağrı skorları derlendi. Diz içine 9 cc %2’lik prilokain ve 1 cc’lik triamsinolon heksasetonid kombinasyonu uygulandı.
Bulgular: Kırbeş-seksen sekiz (67,49±8,99) yaş arasında, 108 hastanın (K=77, E=31) 151 dizi çalışmaya dahil edilmiştir. Olguların %55,6’sı (n=84) sağ, %44,4’ü (n=67) sol diz; %29,8’i
(n=45) evre 3, %70,2’si (n=70,2) evre 4’tür. Enjeksiyon öncesi VAS skoru 8,34±0,75, SKÖ 4,29±0,48; enjeksiyon sonrası VAS skoru 3,68±1,59, SKÖ 2,22±0,8 (p<0,001) saptanmıştır.
Sonuç: Diz osteoartritinde evrelere göre farklı tedavi seçenekleri uygulanmaktadır. Diz içi enjeksiyonlar, fizyoterapi ve non-steroid anti-enflamatuvar ilaçlar sık kullanılan
konservatif tedavi yöntemleridir. Diz içi enjeksiyonlarda steroid ile hyalüronik asit deriveleri ayrı ayrı veya bir arada uygulanabilmektedir. Diz içi steroid enjeksiyonları ağrıyı hızlı
azaltmaları ve tekrar uygulanabilmeleri nedeniyle cerrahi tedaviden korkan ve zaman kazanmak isteyen hastalar ile erken evrelerde kombine tedavilerde tercih edilmektedir.
Amaç: Lokal anestetik ve kortikosteroid enjeksiyonunun
subakromiyal sıkışma sendromunun konservatif tedavisine
katkısı araştırıldı.
Çalışma planı: Çalışmaya subakromiyal sıkışma sendromu
tanısı konan ...ve rotator manşet lezyonu olmayan 56 hasta (39
kadın, 17 erkek; ort. yaş 50; dağılım 31-68) alındı. Hastalar
enjeksiyon grubu ve kontrol grubu şeklinde rastgele seçimle
eşit sayıda iki gruba ayrıldı. Enjeksiyon grubuna tedavinin
başında subakromiyal enjeksiyonla 9 ml bupivakain ve 1 ml
betametazon uygulandı. Tüm hastalara üç hafta süreli (15
seans) aynı fizik tedavi ve rehabilitasyon programı uygulandı. Değerlendirmeler tedaviden önce ve tedaviden üç ve altı
hafta sonra yapıldı. Fonksiyonel durum Constant skoru, ağrı
görsel analog skala ile değerlendirildi ve eklem hareket açıklığı gonyometre ile ölçüldü.
Sonuçlar: İki grupta da üçüncü ve altıncı haftalarda tedavi öncesine göre ağrı skorunda, Constant skorunda ve eklem hareket
açıklığı ölçümlerinde anlamlı düzelmeler elde edildi (p<0.05).
Enjeksiyondan 24 saat sonra ağrı skoru %37.7 oranında azaldı. Tedavi öncesi ile karşılaştırıldığında altıncı hafta Constant
skoru enjeksiyon grubunda 39.9±13.9'dan 68.4±7.6'ya, kontrol
grubunda 40.3±13.4'ten 64.7±7.7'ye yükseldi. Üçüncü ve altıncı
haftalarda iki grup arasında ağrı skorunda anlamlı fark bulunmadı (p>0.05). Enjeksiyon grubunda altıncı haftada Constant
skoru (p=0.044) ve üçüncü haftadaki dış ve iç rotasyon değerleri
(p=0.03) kontrol grubuna göre anlamlı derecede yüksek bulundu. Altıncı haftadaki hareket açıklığı ölçümlerinde gruplar arasında anlamlı fark bulunmadı (p>0.05).
Çıkarımlar: Subakromiyal enjeksiyon uygulaması ağrıyı
önemli derecede azaltarak, eklem hareket açıklığı ve güçlendirme egzersizlerinin daha etkili olarak yapılmasına ve
fonksiyonel sonuçların daha başarılı olmasına katkıda bulunmaktadır.
Objectives: We evaluated the contribution of subacromial local anesthetic and corticosteroid injection to the conservative
treatment of subacromial impingement syndrome.
Methods: The study included 56 patients (39 women, 17 men;mean age 50 years; range 31 to 68 years) with subacromial impingement syndrome without any rotator cuff lesion. The patients
were randomly allocated to injection and control groups equal in
number. The former group received a single subacromial injection of 9 ml bupivacaine and 1 ml betamethasone at the begin-
ning of the treatment. The same physical therapy and rehabilitation program was administered to both groups, consisting of 15
sessions (3 weeks). Evaluations were made before, and three and
six weeks after treatment. Functional results were assessed using the Constant score, pain was assessed using a visual analog
scale, and range of motion was measured with a goniometer.
Results: Compared to pretreatment values, both groups exhibited significant improvements in pain score, Constant score, and
range of motion measurements at three and six weeks (p<0.05).
Pain score decreased by 37.7% in the injection group after 24
hours of injection. Pretreatment Constant scores which were
39.9±13.9 and 40.3±13.4 in the injection and control groups increased to 68.4±7.6 and 64.7±7.7 at six weeks, respectively. No
significant differences were seen in pain scores between the two
groups at three and six weeks (p>0.05). Patients receiving subacromial injection had significantly higher Constant scores at six
weeks (p=0.044) and significantly greater external and internal
rotation at three weeks (p=0.03). Range of motion measurements
did not differ between the two groups at six weeks (p>0.05).
Conclusion: Subacromial injection contributes to the success of the conservative treatment through decreasing pain
and enabling more effective range of motion and strengthening exercises, both of which are associated with increased
functional improvement.
Amaç: Hafif ve orta derece diz osteoartriti olan hastalarda artroskopik debridman sonrası eklemiçi hiyalüronik asit (HA) enjeksiyonlarının ağrı ve fonksiyon parametreleri üzerindeki etkisi ...araştırıldı.
Çalışma planı: Kellgren-Lawrence sınıflandırmasına göre evre II-III primer diz osteoartriti olan 67 hasta (21 erkek, 46 kadın; ort. yaş 56; dağılım 40-65) standart yöntemlerle artroskopik debridman sonrası HA enjeksiyonu (n=33) ve sadece takip (kontrol, n=34) gruplarına rastgele ayrıldı. Artroskopik girişimden üç hafta sonra başlanan sodyum hiyalüronat (Orthovisc) enjeksiyonu birer hafta arayla üç kez tekrarlandı. İki grup, artroskopi öncesi ve artroskopi sonrası 6, 12 ve 24. haftalarda WOMAC osteoartrit indeksinin ağrı ve fiziksel fonksiyon altskalalarıyla değerlendirildi.
Sonuçlar: Altıncı haftada ağrı skorundaki düzelme iki grup arasında anlamlı farklılık göstermezken (HA %21, kontrol %16; p=0.478), fonksiyon skorundaki düzelme enjeksiyon grubunda anlamlı derecede fazla idi (HA %23, kontrol %9.2; p=0.018). Sonraki değerlendirmelerde, her iki grupta ağrı ve fonksiyon parametrelerinde süren belirgin düzelme gruplar arasında anlamlı farklılık göstermedi. Fonksiyon skorunda başlangıca göre en az %30 ve %40 düzelme gösteren hastaların oranı, sadece altıncı haftada enjeksiyon grubunda anlamlı derecede yüksek bulundu (sırasıyla p=0.025 ve p=0.038).
Çıkarımlar: Artroskopik debridman sonrası eklemiçi HA tedavisinin erken dönemde ek yararı olsa da, bu tedavi kombinasyonunun önerilebilmesi için daha uzun takip süresi olan daha geniş kontrollü çalışmalara ihtiyaç vardır.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the
effect of intra-articular hyaluronic acid (HA) injections after
arthroscopic debridement on pain and functional parameters
in patients with mild-to-moderate knee osteoarthritis.
Methods: Sixty-seven patients (21 men, 46 women; mean
age 56 years; range 40 to 65 years) who underwent standard
arthroscopic debridement for primary knee osteoarthritis of
Kellgren-Lawrence grade II-III were randomly assigned to
HA injections (n=33) or to only follow-up as controls (n=34).
Intra-articular sodium hyaluronate injections (Orthovisc)
were started three weeks after arthroscopic debridement,
totaling three injections interspersed with a week. The two
groups were evaluated with the pain and physical function
subscales of the WOMAC osteoarthritis index before and after
6, 12, and 24 weeks of arthroscopic debridement.
Results: Improvement in pain scores at 6 weeks did not differ
between the two groups (HA 21%, control 16%; p=0.478),
whereas improvement in function scores was significantly
higher in the HA group (23% vs 9.2%; p=0.018). The rates
of improvement in pain and function scores increased in
subsequent evaluations, but these did not differ significantly
between the two groups. The percentages of patients who
exhibited at least 30% and 40% improvement from baseline
function scores were significantly greater in the HA group
only at six weeks (p=0.025 and p=0.038, respectively).
Conclusion: Intra-articular HA injections after arthroscopic
debridement provide additional short-term benefits, but this
combination therapy should be justified by further controlled
studies with longer follow-up and larger patient groups.

de iskemik kardiyomiyopatili (İKMP) hastalarda sol ventrikül
fonksiyonları ve kanlanması üzerine olumlu etkileri
olabileceği gösterilmiştir. Bu ...çalışmada, İKMP'li hastalarda
intrakoroner otolog kemik iliği kaynaklı mononükleer
kök hücre (MKH) naklinin güvenlik ve yapılabilirliği
araştırıldı.
Ça lış ma pla nı: Çalışmaya İKMP'li 15 hasta (14 erkek, 1
kadın; ort. yaş 49±11) alındı. Daha önce perkütan koroner
girişim ile revaskülarizasyon uygulanmış olan hastalara,
işlem öncesi açık olduğu belirlenen hedef damar içerisine
yerleştirilmiş bir balon kateter aracılığı ile MKH nakli
yapıldı. Hastalara klinik ve laboratuvar değerlendirmeler
yanı sıra, başlangıçta ve 6, 12 ve 18. aylarda treadmil
egzersiz testi, konvansiyonel ekokardiyografi ve SPECT
görüntülemesi yapıldı.
Bul gu lar: Altıncı ayda, sol ventrikül ejeksiyon fraksiyonunda
belirgin artış (p=0.001), SPECT ile belirlenen hipoperfüze
alanlarda azalma (p=0.002), miyokard oksijen
tüketimi (p=0.001) ve metabolik eşdeğerlikte (p=0.001)
belirgin artış saptandı. Kök hücre tedavisinin olumlu
etkileri 12. ve 18. ay takiplerinde de gözlendi. İşlem ile
ilişkili herhangi bir komplikasyon veya hastane içi olay

So nuç: Kalp yetersizliği semptomları, sol ventrikül fonksiyonları
ve perfüzyonu üzerine olumlu etkileri olan intrakoroner
kök hücre nakli İKMP'li hastalarda yardımcı ve
alternatif bir tedavi yöntemi olarak kullanılabilir.
Objectives: It has been demonstrated that intracoronary
stem cell transplantation may have beneficial effects on
left ventricular function and perfusion both in patients with
acute and chronic ischemic cardiomyopathy (ICMP). We
evaluated the safety and feasibility of intracoronary autologous
bone marrow-derived mononuclear stem cell (MSC)
implantation in patients with ICMP.
Study design: The study included 15 patients (14 males, 1
female; mean age 49±11 years) with ICMP. All the patients
received MSC transplantation via a balloon catheter to the
target vessel which had been revascularized by percutaneous
coronary intervention and was patent before the
procedure. Evaluations were made at baseline and 6, 12,
and 18 months after the procedure with complete clinical
and laboratory examinations, and by treadmill exercise test,
conventional echocardiography, and SPECT imaging.
Results: At six months, left ventricular ejection fraction
increased significantly (p=0.001), hypoperfused areas on
SPECT images reduced (p=0.002), and both myocardial
oxygen consumption (p=0.001) and metabolic equivalents
(p=0.001) increased. These beneficial effects of
stem cell therapy were also observed at 12 and 18
months. No complications or in-hospital events occurred
related with the procedure.
Conclusion: Due to its beneficial effects on heart failure
symptoms, left ventricular function, and perfusion, intracoronary
stem cell transplantation can be used as an alternative,
adjunctive treatment option in patients with ICMP.
