The role of clergy in the region of Istria has been very important throughout history, especially in the preservation of Slovenian and Croatian language in the Julian March area in the period between ...the two world wars. Although the role of the priest was important, this topic remains relatively unexplored, especially when it comes to Slovene priests who worked in the area of Croatian Istria; some of them are still rather unknown to the general public. That is why, among other issues, this paper deals with the position of Slovene priests in the area of Croatian Istria, with particular emphasis on the work and activities of Leopold Jurca. In addition, Josip Grašič and Stjepan (Štefan) Cek are also mentioned. Leopold Jurca is one of the most important historical figures, who worked in the area of Croatian Istria in the period between the two world wars. His activity is described in the book My Years in Istria under Fascism (Moja leta v Istri pod fašizmom, 1978), and although he has left an autobiographical work behind, it has not been fully valorized among the men of faith. Through his work, Leopold Jurca makes the effort to preserve the Croatian language and cultural heritage. He was quite popular among the parishioners of the Trviž parish between 1929 and 1945 and has left a powerful legacy.

Instrumental data obtained from tide gauges and repeated levelling measurements from the NE Adriatic and Sicily are also considered. These methods have one great advantage with respect to continuous GPS measurements and the satellite altimetric observations, in that a much greater time span is available. Although the altimetric measurements are available for 16 years, and the GPS for less than a decade, repeated levelling lines cover up to 50 years and tide gauge observations in some cases to 100 years or more. The greater time span allows for more stable differential rate estimates. The repeated levelling shows that the plain east of Mestre is subsiding (to −4
mm/a). The Messina tidal gauge demonstrates a total coseismic and post-seismic subsidence of 77
cm associated with the event of 1908, the post-seismic phase lasting for at least 13 years. The Reggio Calabria tidal station points to an uplift of this station relative to Palermo in the order of 1–2
mm/a.
This paper discusses the current language situation among the Italian minority in Slovenian Primorje in Koper. During the fi eld research conducted by the authors’ team, narratives in Italian were ...recorded from informants. Using discursive and structural-typological methods of analysis, the authors reveal that the linguistic reality of modern Koper is perceived as constantly changing, and the Italian spontaneous speech of respondents is intertwined with borrowings from the surrounding South Slavic languages. The modern language situation is the result of historical changes in the Istria region during the twentieth century. In addition to insertions and quotations in Slovenian, items from the Croatian language are found, refl ecting the linguistic situation of the Yugoslav period and the border position of the Slovenian Primorje. Special attention is paid to analysis of the language competence of Italians in the Slovenian language, among representatives of both the older and younger generations of students. In the Slovene language of Italians, a number of features peculiar to Slavic dialects in Italy are found, which allows us to discuss the same linguistic factors. It is possible to reconstruct the language competence of older people only partially on the basis of indirect evidence. There is a discrepancy between the rights guaranteed under the law (the use of the Italian language) and the linguistic reality faced by informants, which may be the result of both a decline in the prestige of Italian and of the small number of the Italian diaspora, part of which is subject to language assimilation, including as a result of mixed marriages. The paper also discusses the role of the media and the linguistic landscape in the region.
The aim of this paper was to research the impact of the pandemic on the food and beverage services sector in the County of Istria. The analysis was performed using the Altman Z- score model in order ...to analyze and test the negative effects the COVID-19 pandemic has had on the companies within the mentioned sector. The result will also indicate the number of companies with a potentially high risk of bankruptcy in the next few years. The research was conducted on a sample of 60 micro and small companies in the period from 2018 - 2020. Descriptive statistics methods were used in the analysis while the hypothesis was tested using the Student t-test. The results of the research indicate a significant deterioration of the c companies business operations due to the impact of the pandemic in 2020. A significant statistical deviation was determined in the analysis, precisely a significant decrease in the values of the indicators in 2020 compared to the previous two years. The research also indicates that there are companies resistant to the negative effects of the pandemic and that resistance can be attributed to a continuously responsible performance of business operations. The results of the research can also be used with certain reliability to predict bankruptcy in the next two years and indicate that more than half of the companies were classified in a high-risk zone of bankruptcy. Finally, the supporting measures introduced by the Government were the key to maintaining the continuity of business operations of the sector helping the reduction of negative effects of the pandemic and the imposed restrictions.

L. forest stands. Oak lace bug causes losses in chlorophyll, which has a negative influence on photosynthesis and transpiration activity, as well as on the health status of oak trees. We conducted our study on two sites in the Mediterranean region in Istria, Croatia, where infestation with oak lace bug has not been recorded. Results showed new records of oak lace bug in Istria.

L. forests in Croatia. We assume that the negative influence of oak lace bug coupled with other biotic and abiotic stressors in the Mediterranean region will probably have some influence on the health status of oak trees.
The Raša coal from Istria belongs to a special type of superhigh-organic-sulfur coals, with organic sulfur content of 11%. This study encompasses culm and coal ashes from old landfills left behind ...after many decades of the Raša coal use with regards to their rare earth element geochemistry. Regarding the studied coal ashes, obtained results suggest a substantial variability in the content of rare earth elements and Y (REY) in coal combustion products generated from the Raša coal. Although samples of coal ash and culm of the Raša coal have REO (oxide of REY) content (up to 464 mg kg−1) below the level considered as the cut-off grade for beneficial recovery of these metals (1000 ppm, ash basis), they contain relatively high share of critical REY (>30%). The coutl values (outlook coefficient of REY ores; based on Seredin-Dai's criterion) range from 0.78 to 1.45 while Eu and Ce anomaly display slightly positive and negative values, respectively. With LaN/SmN ratios below unity, from 0.65 to 0.88, and LaN/LuN and GdN/LuN ratios ranging from 0.53 to 1.17 and from 0.80 to 1.41, respectively, they dominantly correspond to M-type of enrichment and only sporadically to H-type of enrichment.
Previous studies attributed the formation of superhigh-organic-sulfur Raša coal to the seawater percolation. However, the geochemical data presented in this study suggest that the Raša coal-bearing strata, representing the Upper Paleocene lacustrine and brackish facies, were influenced by both the seawater and the hydrothermal solutions under conditions which led not only to sulfur enrichment but also to REY accumulation.
From the economic standpoint and currently available data, Raša coal ash cannot be considered as the secondary raw material for rare earth elements, but its significantly variable composition and relatively high REO found in culm highlights the need for future studies of Raša coal and related combustion products.

This paper documents the analysis of a coastal boulder deposit that was recently identified along the northern Adriatic coast (Premantura Promontory, Istria, Croatia). Accumulations of large boulders ...have not previously been reported in the northern Adriatic, which can be viewed as a semi-enclosed basin. A multidisciplinary approach was used to investigate the site including geological and geomorphological surveys, together with the use of an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV), digital photogrammetric analysis, hydrodynamic modelling and 14C AMS datings. Measurements of boulder position, elevation, size, shape and density were fed into hydrodynamic equations that are used to estimate the minimum storm and tsunami wave height required to enable the accumulation of boulders. Biogenic marine carbonate encrustations observed on 14 boulders suggest the infra- and sublittoral zones as source areas, while for most of the boulders a subaerial origin is hypothesised. The boulder deposit occurs on a flat promontory where the topography, together with the stratified limestone bedding planes and dense joint pattern constitute the predisposing factors for boulder size and detachment. Comparisons between satellite images taken between 2008 and 2017, pictures collected from Internet and a 2012 snorkel survey of the Istrian coast made it possible to highlight the emplacement of a boulder with an estimated weight of 7.65 t during late 2013 or early 2014. The study examines the mechanisms that may be responsible for the detachment and transport of these large limestone rock fragments from the emergent part of the coast and from the sea bed towards inland areas. The results suggest the occurrence of very recent extreme weather conditions as well as multiple historical storm events and exclude a tsunami origin of the boulders.

Demografska povijest Dalmacije i njezina zaleđa u kasnom srednjem i ranom novom vijeku bitno je obilježena migracijama i privremenim ili trajnim doseljenjima većih skupina morlačkog (vlaškog) ...stanovništva. Vranski je prostor u tom pogledu, a isto se može reći i za čitavu zadarsku regiju, slabo istražen, posebice kada je riječ o 15. i 16. stoljeću. Ovim ćemo prilogom nastojati ispuniti barem dio te historiografske praznine, usredotočujući se na period od četrdesetih godina 15. stoljeća do početka Ciparskog rata 1570. godine. U prvom ćemo dijelu rasprave razmotriti arhivske vijesti o sezonskim migracijama morlačkih katuna, koji su često zimi iz svojih staništa u hrvatskom zaleđu dolazili na mletačke pašnjake u okolici Vrane. Potom ćemo se posvetiti migracijskim procesima uzrokovanim osmanskim osvajanjima, pri čemu ćemo posebno pratiti tragove morlačke populacije poznate pod nazivom Vlasi Istre ili Morlaci Istrijani, koja je od 20-ih god. 16. st. davala demografski pečat pograničnom prostoru šireg zadarskog zaleđa, obremenjenog mletačko-osmanskim trvenjima i ratnim sukobima.
Investigation of the geochemical composition of bivalve shells can provide information on changes in the marine environment occurring during the lifespan of an organism. Three species, locally ...abundant in the Adriatic Sea, were chosen in this study, namely Glycymeris pilosa, Callista chione, and Venus verrucosa. Of these, G. pilosa has the longest lifespan, exceeding 50 years, and therefore presents a potential archive of decadal climate variability. The other two species, C. chione and V. verrucosa, are commercially important. Samples were collected alive by SCUBA diving in the North Adriatic Sea, near Barbariga, Istria. Major growth increments in these shells form on an annual basis and are clearly visible in shell cross-sections enabling correct temporal positioning of geochemical data obtained from different shell parts. In this study, we applied laser ablation - inductively coupled plasma - mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) in line scan mode to determine the trace and minor element composition along the major growth axis in the hinge area of the shells. Objectives of this study were to compare signals within and between species, and to relate results to available environmental parameters. High resolution time-series of Na/Cashell, Mg/Cashell and Sr/Cashell display characteristic cyclic variations. Na/Cashell minima and Mg/Cashell and Sr/Cashell maxima occur near shell annual growth lines in all three studied species. Results indicate that seawater temperature is not a main driver for incorporation of these elements. Ba/Cashell data vary between years and species and have noncyclic sharp peaks. Callista chione and V. verrucosa specimens show higher peaks and background Ba/Cashell values than G. pilosa. Most pronounced peaks in Ba/Cashell occurred at the beginning of the growing season corresponding to the end of year 2011 and beginning of year 2012 and coincided with unusual dense water formation and subsequent changes in the plankton communities in the Adriatic Sea. Implications of our study suggest that synchronous peaks in studied specimens are caused by external forcing which could occur on larger, regional scales, encouraging future studies covering wider area in the Adriatic Sea and other parts of the Mediterranean.
