Thirty two autochthonous Jezersko–Solčava lambs were used to investigate the effect of production (pasture vs. stable) and weaning system (suckling vs. weaned) on fatty acid composition of ...Longissimus dorsi intramuscular fat in a 2 × 2 factorial design. Pasture lambs had lower intramuscular fat concentration (P<0.0001) more PUFA and trans C18:1, more ALA (P=0.0322), ARA (<0.0001) and EPA (0.0149) but less SFA (P<0.0001) than stable lambs. Weaning system affected PUFA (P=0.0040) and MUFA (P=0.0070) but not SFA and trans C18:1 fatty acids. The interaction of production system and weaning system was significant mainly for trans C18:1 and trans C18:2 fatty acids. Finally, lamb meat from all four treatments which are traditionally used in rearing of Jezersko–Solčava lambs are favourable from the nutritive point of view, due to their low n−6/n−3 ratio.
The aim of this study was to estimate the effect of feeding system on the growth rate and carcass quality of crossbred Improved Jezersko-Solčava x Texel (JSRT) lambs and to evaluate the effect of sex ...on these traits. The trial was conducted in nature according to the traditional rearing systems. The trial included 44 crossbred lambs, which were born and reared until the slaughter in three different flocks. In the age of 10 days suckled lambs were offered with ad libitum corresponding diets according to the feeding system. All lambs were slaughtered in seven consecutive days by the same procedure. The effect of feeding system significantly affected daily gain from birth to slaughter, EUROP carcass conformation and shoulder width. Likewise, the effect of sex significantly affected daily gain from birth to slaughter and internal fatness of carcasses. According to carcass cuts the feeding system significantly affected only the proportion of neck and leg. Considering meat quality traits, feeding system had a significant effect on the pH 45 and CIE a* values. In this study, we could speculate that more than the feeding system the growth and the carcass traits as well as meat traits were affected by the amount of the supplement.

The Jezersko meteorite is a newly confirmed stony meteorite found in 1992 in the Karavanke mountains, Slovenia. The meteorite is moderately weathered (W2), indicating short terrestrial residence ...time. Chondrules in partially recrystallized matrix are clearly discernible but often fragmented and have mean diameter of 0.73 mm. The meteorite consists of homogeneous olivine (Fa19.4) and low‐Ca pyroxenes (Fs16.7Wo1.2), of which 34% are monoclinic, and minor plagioclase (Ab83An11Or6) and Ca‐pyroxene (Fs6Wo45.8). Troilite, kamacite, zoned taenite, tetrataenite, chromite, and metallic copper comprise about 16.5 vol% of the meteorite. Phosphates are represented by merrillite and minor chlorapatite. Undulatory extinction in some olivine grains and other shock indicators suggests weak shock metamorphism between stages S2 and S3. The bulk chemical composition generally corresponds to the mean H chondrite composition. Low siderophile element contents indicate the oxidized character of the Jezersko parent body. The temperatures recorded by two‐pyroxene, olivine‐chromite, and olivine‐orthopyroxene geothermometers are 854 °C, 737–787 °C, and 750 °C, respectively. Mg concentration profiles across orthopyroxenes and clinopyroxenes indicate relatively fast cooling at temperatures above 700 °C. A low cooling rate of 10 °C Myr−1 was obtained from metallographic data. Considering physical, chemical, and mineralogical properties, meteorite Jezersko was classified as an H4 S2(3) ordinary chondrite.
BACKGROUND: The physiological levels of endocrine and metabolic parameters in Slovene autochthonous breeds of sheep are not yet well known, nor are the mechanisms of their adaptability and responses ...to climate and environmental factors. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate fluctuations of cortisol, insulin and non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA) in growing ewes over an one-year period. Blood samples were collected monthly from 10 yearling Jezersko-Solchava, 10 Bovec and 10 Istrian ewes. Serum cortisol, insulin and NEFA were measured with commercial kits. RESULTS: Mean monthly cortisol values fluctuated with low levels in summer and high levels in autumn. Significant peaked cortisol values of 25.69 ± 6.89, 14.67 ± 2.43 and 21.11 ± 7.25 μg/L in Jezersko-Solchava, Bovec and Istrian breed, respectively, were found in September (Bovec breed) and October (Jezersko-Solchava and Istrian breed). Mean monthly insulin values increased during the observation period. The highest levels of 14.60 ± 3.15, 16.03 ± 5.35 and 12.56 ± 2.52 μIU/mL in Jezersko-Solchava, Bovec and Istrian breed, respectively, were observed in the last sample collection in May. NEFA concentrations were found to be low except in some autumn and spring months. The peak values were observed in March for Jezersko-Solchava and Istrian breed (0.60 ± 0.05 and 0.66 ± 0.10 mmol/L), and in April for Bovec breed (0.71 ± 0.11 mmol/L). CONCLUSIONS: Monthly fluctuations of cortisol, insulin and NEFA were measured in all observed sheep breeds, but between-breed differences in monthly values of examined parameters were insignificant. Significantly increased serum cortisol levels were found in autumn for all breeds and were probably associated with the onset of puberty and low environmental temperature. A gradual increase of insulin level in the examined ewes was in parallel with their growth. Significantly higher NEFA values in spring suggest qualitatively insufficient feed supply during that period.
Observations were made on a small flock of 50 sheep of the native Slovenian Jezersko-Solcava breed by investigators with dental training. The aim was to determine the range of naturally occurring ...dental diseases, so postmortem examinations were performed on animals slaughtered for meat or culled due to disease. Additional data were obtained by examination of 25 specimens submitted for investigation of unexplained death at a pathology centre. Seventeen (34 per cent) of the flock had incisor disease but only five became clinically ill; all these five had advanced cheek tooth disease (gingival recession, periodontal pocketing, diastemata, missing teeth, occlusal wear abnormalities, food impaction, tooth mobility, tooth fracture, tooth loss and/or jaw abscessation). Advanced cheek tooth disease was found in 21 (84 per cent) of the sheep submitted to the pathology laboratory, while only seven (28 per cent) had advanced incisor disease. The results show that, as in other countries, dental disease is a serious problem for sheep in Slovenia.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of feeding system on growth and carcass characteristics of Improved Jezersko-Solčava (JSR) weaned lambs. Thirty-five lambs (25.48 kg) housed in ...group pens were divided into four groups and offered different diets which consisted of hay and second harvest in the ratio of 40:60 and a supplement of 650 g concentrate (Diet 1), hay and second harvest in the ratio of 40:60 (Diet 2), hay and 650 g of concentrate (Diet 3), and just hay (Diet 4) for 50 days. Daily intake was calculated by weighting the offered amount and leftovers of concentrate and forage. Daily intake per lamb contained 15.56 MJ, 14.38 MJ, 16.57 MJ, and 12.23 MJ ME for the Diet 1, 2, 3, and 4, respectively. Lambs were slaughtered at 30.77 kg of live weight. Lambs fed Diet 1 reached the highest DG (165.5 g/day), followed by Diet 3 (146.89 g/day), Diet 2 (123.55 g/day) and Diet 4 (75.51 g/day). HCW and CCW were higher in Diet 1 and 3, compared to Diet 2 and 4. Lambs fed Diet 3 had the highest DP (45.35%), followed by Diet 1, 2, and 4 with 44.33, 41.10 and 39.51%, respectively. The lowest kidney-pelvic fat was observed in lambs fed Diet 4 (5.64) and the highest in Diet 3 (7.66). These results demonstrate that fattening of weaned JSR lambs fed by forage-concentrate diets produced heavier carcasses than those only fed by forage, without significant effects on carcass fatness or carcass conformation.
The aim of this work was to infer PrP genotype probabilities and derived statistics in sheep to provide additional information for selection against susceptibility to classical scrapie. The method ...was demonstrated with data from Jezersko–Solcava sheep breed. Pedigree data consisted of 10429 animals of which 3669 animals had known PrP genotype and 2673 were alive and not genotyped. Five PrP alleles were present with the following frequencies:

AHQ 0.074,
ARH 0.083,
ARQ 0.632, and
VRQ 0.037. Iterative allelic peeling with incomplete penetrance model as implemented in the GenoProb program was used to infer genotype probabilities. There were only some additional identifications of PrP genotype and NSP (national scrapie plan) type with high probability. The main reasons for a low number of additional identifications can be attributed to the large number of alleles with moderate frequencies, incomplete penetrance model, uniform prior, and inherent pedigree and genotype data structure. In order to overcome the limits of additional genotype identifications novel statistics were derived (maximal NSP type, average NSP value and its variance and reliability) to facilitate practical implementation of selection for scrapie resistance based on NSP types. Maximal NSP type can be used to infer maximal potential scrapie susceptibility of individual animals as well as for the entire flocks. The average NSP value encompasses all information contained in PrP genotype probabilities and is the most useful statistic for the selection on NSP type and therefore PrP genotype. These novel statistics can be used as a criterion for the selection against scrapie susceptibility for the whole population taking into the account possible errors in genotype and/or pedigree data.
