DUDLEY - The Dudley-Charlton Regional School Committee last night approved budget cuts in staff, athletics and supplies totaling $209,000. The $209,000 cut translates into a reduction of $92,000 in ...Dudley's operating assessment and $117,000 in the assessment for Charlton. Dudley's Finance Committee had asked for a reduction of $355,000, while Charlton had requested a $345,000 cut.
Once the fireworks hit the streets, a dealer can easily sell them for about four times the wholesale price, said John Kabala, the Alhambra fire marshal. He heads an area task force against illegal ...fireworks. Illegal fireworks are commonly sold out of cars parked near legal fireworks stands, Kabala said. One company's Web site includes a statement about shipping fireworks: "As a seller of fireworks, we are required to comply with federal law and the regulations for our state, Pennsylvania. As a purchaser of fireworks, the responsibility for following your state laws falls upon you, not us"
Noting that while our contemporary society vitally depends on global capital markets and financial speculation, these practices seem to conspicuously lack an aesthetic, moral or spiritual ground, ...this paper explores the “economic theology” of Joseph Penso de la Vega’s The Confusion of Confusions. Set in the context of the 17th-century Amsterdam community of conversos and the rise of the stock exchange spawned by the Dutch East India Company, the book compares the passions of the stock exchange to those of religion. De la Vega draws on the contemporary Messianic movement of Sabbateanism and the traditional Jewish Kabala. The anticipation of continued growth in share prices is allegorically associated with the religious movement’s expectation that the world would end and Sabbatai Zeti become the Messiah. Furthermore, De la Vega associates the shares with fragments of the cosmos by way of Philo’s reading of the Tower of Babel. The significance of de la Vega’s “economic theology” emerges from these sources: the financial speculator is an antinomian figure who, through the seeming chaos and perils of his ongoing speculation, must break the law in order to uphold it and regenerate the society. The end of the paper develops a conception of financial speculation after the death of God.
Charlton-Dudley - After thanking Dudley voters for approving $97,943 at a special town meeting Monday to bring that town's contribution for the school budget up to the requested amount, Sean M. ...Gilrein, superintendent of the Dudley-Charlton Regional School District, urged Dudley residents to support a Proposition 2-1/2 override on Sept. 13 to preserve other town services. The committee voted 2-5 against a motion by Catherine Kabala to hire an additional kindergarten teacher for Mason Road School in Dudley. Only Mrs. Kabala and Pauline Aucoin supported the motion. Mrs. Kabala made the motion after noting she learned that the projected enrollment in the class is now at 24 pupils. Although the majority of the board voted against her motion, members did agree that kindergarten attendance at that school needs to be watched to see what it actually is when school opens.
DUDLEY - A standing-room-only crowd of voters last night overwhelmingly approved the $13.9 million Dudley-Charlton regional school budget by a vote of 982-277. Supporters of the budget cheered as ...they stood to vote and realized that victory was at hand. The school budget will cost the town of Charlton $2,675,226, including $379,318 in capital costs. Dudley's share of the school tab is $1,865,570, including $41,040 in capital expenses. The school budget has been a contentious issue for several months and residents of both towns turned out in force for the vote. The meeting was moved from the high school's auditorium to the gymnasium to accommodate the 1,402 voters, 773 from Charlton and 629 from Dudley.
Desjardins Securities analyst Paul Howbold stated: "Given the current operational restructuring currently underway at Leitch, we are somewhat concerned by the timing of Ms. Margaret Craig's ...departure." Leitch is expected to voluntarily delist it shares from the Nasdaq on July 22. They came close but were not successful. "It was in all the papers." As it happened, Webster's Boosters A.C. baseball team visited Gilbertville that Sunday for a game against the team there. "The ...umpire would go out and announce the battery in those days and he announced that (Louis) Cichowski would pitch and (Stanley) Stanley Kabala would catch for Webster." A buzz swept through the crowd. Somehow, for some reason, Gilbertville fans thought the Webster battery mates were related to the Polish aviators. "We won the game and they had us go into a hall afterward," said Mr. Kabala. "They wanted to know all about the flight." The answer was Lakeview. "When I was a young boy, my grandfather, Louis Tokarz, would take me marketing on Saturday mornings," Mr. Scott Ducharme remembered. "We would finish up at the Lakeview bottling plant on Deslaurier Avenue." Grandpa filled out a 12-bottle case of tonic and Scott picked one of the flavors.
