CHARLTON - Despite only minimum assessment funding from Charlton town meeting voters, the Dudley-Charlton Regional School committee said last night it will persist in trying to raise an additional ...$160,000 from the town of Dudley. Committee members Catherine Kabala and Donald P. Wayman, both of Dudley, urged the board to reduce the budget to facilitate its acceptance at the upcoming meeting. Wayman is a former member of the Dudley Finance, Appropriations, and Advisory Board. Janet Blasius, a Charlton parent, told the committee, "This is a parents' problem." She said she had compiled a petition with more than 300 signatures that asks the schools to formally notify parents when a problem erupts.
DUDLEY - Dudley-Charlton Regional School District will save about $64,000 next year by eliminating mid-day school bus runs for kindergarten pupils, Superintendent of Schools Richard A. Carmignani ...told a group of parents last night. Anne Marie Hurley sought information on other programs, asking why $47,000 is spent to transport children to private schools in Webster and Southbridge. About 250 Dudley and Charlton students go to private schools, said Carmignani. Per pupil cost for the district was $3,200 last year. Some of the children going to private schools might transfer to public schools if out of district bus service is eliminated.
Richard A. Carmignani will step into John F. Canavan's shoes on Nov. 1, the day after Canavan retires. Canavan has been superintendent for 20 years, leading the school district he helped create. ...Carmignani said during the job interview last night at Shepherd Hill Regional High school that he has a deep commitment to the district and can galvanize residents and staff to create the best possible school system for Dudley and Charlton children.
"We have questions we need answered throughout the process," said Selectman David M. Peters. CHARLTON's Town Counsel, James Cosgrove, who also represents the Dudley-Charlton school district, has said ...he will not advise either side to avoid any possible conflict of interest. The regional school committee has already reduced its initial budget request by $509,000 by cutting several staff positions and defering equipment purchases. The $282,000 cut in Charlton's assessment would translate into an overall $505,906 reduction in the budget, since Dudley's assessment would have to be cut proportionally, said School Committee Chairman Catherine Kabala.
Gary J. Reschke, a planner who splits his time between the towns of Sturbridge, Sutton and Southbridge, has resigned effective June 3. Reschke, who is originally from northern Illinois, said the move ...had been planned as a career move. He has been here four years, originally hired as joint planner for Southbridge-Sturbridge. Last year, his salary was eliminated from the Southbridge town budget because of budget constraints. It was then he began as joint planner for Sturbridge-Sutton and on a hourly basis for Southbridge. Plans to eliminate bus runs to parochial schools in Webster and Southbridge will be discussed when the committee convenes May 8 at Shepherd Hill Regional High School, said Catherine Kabala. Parents of parochial students say the service saves money for the district.
Rev. Roland Lajoie of St. Anthony of Padua Church will offer the invocation and Rev. F. James Grosser of the Charlton Baptist Church will give the benediction. The prelude will be performed by ...Jeffrey Dowling, a sophomore at the school.
Mr. Stan Kabala said Fred Godard, former president and chief operating officer at Leitch from 1997 to 1999, was passed over for the chief executive position in 1999 when John MacDonald was chosen to ...replace Leitch co-founder Bob Lehtonen. Mr. Kabala was then named interim chief executive. He said Leitch believes there are superior candidates available who have a clearer vision for the business and a better understanding of it. "Obviously, we believe this is another attempt to get the job," he said. The dissident group is headed by Mr. Godard and Richard Kupnicki, former vice-president of advanced technology and research and development at Leitch from 1989 to 2000. The group filed a proxy circular on Thursday, proposing a slate of nine alternative directors. The circular said Leitch's operations had deteriorated since Mr. Lehtonen's departure in November, 1999.
