This article presents two modernist building case studies, one each from East and West Africa which explore approaches to modernist public building conservation. The Rukurato Hall in East Africa, ...formerly used as a regional assembly hall for the Bunyoro Kingdom in Uganda, is now used as the parliament building of the Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom. The Great Hall in West Africa at the Kumasi University of Science and Technology (KNUST) serves as an institutional hall; it is a monument of academic and cultural significance in Kumasi. This article delves into the historical evolution of the Great Hall, which has hosted numerous essential events, ranging from local academic gatherings to distinguished international conferences since 1967. The Great Hall’s rich heritage and architectural prominence have been subject to various interventions aimed at conserving its essence. The examination of these interventions in maintaining the integrity of the building while adapting to the changing needs of the university underscores the delicate balance required between modernization and safeguarding cultural and architectural legacies. Both case studies present contrasting views on the challenges of conservation in the African context, resulting in different conservation efforts. In the case of the Rukurato Hall, arguable the loss of function for a significant period, before reinstatement in the late 1990s and challenges of funding have greatly influenced the ability to realize conservation ambitions. In the Great Hall, whilst conservation funds were secured, and the conservation effort was successful, the use of the Hall has been ‘controlled’ and various actions have arguably tested the authenticity of the conservation process transforming the building aesthetic in the process. This article employs methods of document analysis, archival research, and interviews with key stakeholders.
Terminological problems equally arise in archeological and musicological research of ancient Greek music. One field that suffers from this lack of collaboration is organology. Even the shortest paragraphs on ancient Greek music will mention the lyre, the kithara, and the aulos but only a few authors deal with the barely noticeable terminological problem of the string instruments in detail. By comparison of descriptions and illustrations of the latter, we notice great incompatibility. The biggest terminological problem in classifying string instruments is the term lyre that is used generically and for a specific instrument. Since the paragraphs on ancient music in archeological and musicological literature are short and reduced to basic information, this polysemy is rarely mentioned. This makes the reader’s and the researcher’s understanding of the subject difficult. We find terminological problems due to wrong or uncorroborated depictions, but also because of the wrong translations from Greek and other languages. Some authors equate ancient instruments with contemporary to avoid loan-words but instead use various terms. When they use loan-words they rarely italicize them. This work will try to clarify the classification of ancient Greek string instruments by using definitions based on the studied literature and hopefully it will serve for terminology standardization that can be used by translators and researchers.
The concept of the segmentary state was proposed by Southall, based on ethnographic fieldwork among the Alur people of Uganda, and subsequently applied elsewhere, notably to the putative ancient ...kingdom of Bunyoro-Kitara. Archaeological research, summarized here, has demonstrated that ancient Bunyoro-Kitara was not a segmentary state; indeed, neither was the political system of the Alur. The Nyoro state of the nineteenth century shows a complex interplay of political sovereignty and ritual suzerainty and of accommodation and resistance to central authority. This is understood through examination of the concepts of instrumental and creative power, the latter particularly relevant to negotiations concerning the status of women. The archaeological record of this region is then explored for evidence of earlier expressions of instrumental and creative power. Finally, the paper shows how the archaeological record of Munsa is itself an arena for modern political struggles in which protagonists harness different forms of power.
Using primary sources (oral tradition, archival materials, archaeological evidence, 19th century European explorers’ and missionaries’ accounts) and secondary sources (historical, anthropological, ...archaeological, etc.), this article reevaluates, in a historical perspective, the decline and diminishment in political power and scale as well as in population and landmass of Bunyoro-Kitara, the earliest kingdom in East Africa’s lake region. It concludes that, contrary to the conventional wisdom proffered by 19th century Europeans and sanctified by Makerere University scholarship, the kingdom declined essentially because of the extraordinary errors of judgment and incompetence of most of its rulers from the close of the 17th century to the close of the 19th century, devastating deceases (human and animal), and brutal British conquest resulting in the death of thousands of individuals and loss of territory. By 1900 the kingdom’s population had declined by about four-fifths and landmass by about two-thirds. No major African kingdom experienced such an enormous outcome. Herein lies the fascination with this subject.
This article is a case study of archiving and repatriation of sound recordings to the communities of their origin. Klaus Wachsmann recorded the traditional folk music of Uganda, including that of the ...kingdom of Bunyoro-Kitara, in 1949, 1950 and 1954. These recordings were later deposited at the British Library, digitised and put online, but were accessible only to higher and further education institutions in the United Kingdom that had signed a licence. When the British Library recently opened up its archival sound recordings to a wider community, this was a great opportunity for the kingdom of Bunyoro-Kitara, which has been struggling to revive its traditions, especially those connected with royal rituals. This paper discusses how the author accessed the Klaus Wachsmann historical recordings and took them to Bunyoro-Kitara, and how they have subsequently been used, especially in the revival of musical traditions.
