Das sogenannte Lukasbild des Freisinger Diözesanmuseums gehört zu den kostbarsten byzantinischen Kunstwerken in Bayern. Zahlreiche Wissenschaftler aus unterschiedlichen historischen und ...kunsttechnologischen Spezialgebieten haben sich mit ihrer Entstehung, Veränderung und abenteuerlichen Geschichte beschäftigt. Beiträge eines internationalen Symposiums mit Spezialisten aus Geschichte und Kunstgeschichte, Theologie und Byzantinistik rekonstruieren die mit der Ikone verknüpften Ambitionen. Sie widmen sich u.a. dem Phänomen der Ikone und ihrer wundersamen Entstehung, der Aussagekraft einer Bildreliquie als Kultbild sowie der Frage nach ihrer Einbettung in westliche Repräsentationsformen. In einem internationalen Projekt wurden die Ikone und ihr mit Emailarbeiten kostbar geschmückter Silberbeschlag mit Hilfe neuester kunsttechnologischer Methoden untersucht. Die Ergebnisse werden erstmals in diesem Band präsentiert. The so-called "Icon of Saint Luke" at the Diözesanmuseum Freising - a small Byzantine panel depicting Virgin Mary as "Hagiosoritissa" - ranks among the most precious religious art objects in Bavaria (Germany). According to legend the Byzantine Emperor Manuel II Palaiologus (1350-1425) took the icon with him on his journey to several European courts with the aim of seeking assistance against the Ottoman. It was presented to the Cathedral of Freising by Bishop Nicodemus della Scala in 1440. An international symposium examined the icon on historical, art historical, cultural-historical and art-technological issues. The results are presented for the first time in the publication.

Therefore, Muhammad Al-fatih tried to be able to conquer Constantinople in order to realize the hadith of the Prophet Muhammad "Really, Constantinople will be conquered under the leadership of men, so the best leader is the leader (who conquers) it, and the best troops is the army (which conquered it). The efforts made by Muhammad Al-fatih in conquering the city have been designed in such a way. So that his political strategy in conquering Constantine could run well, until finally he succeeded in conquering the dream city. There are three things that gave rise to a great desire for the heroes of ancient Islam to conquer Constantinople. First, because of the encouragement of faith in Allah which was encouraged by the hadith of the Prophet SAW. Second, because for hundreds of years the city of Constantinople was the center of the splendor of the Romans. Third, because of the beauty of the country and its very strategic location, the connection between two major continents, Europe and Asia.ABSTRAKKonstantinopel merupakan kota terpenting di dunia, tempat ini didirikan pada tahun 330 M oleh kaisar Bizantium, Constantine I. Kota ini memiliki posisi nomor satu secara internasional. Sejak didirikan, orang-rang Bizantium telah menjadikannya sebagai ibu kota negara mereka. Oleh karena itu, Muhammad Al-fatih berusaha untuk dapat menaklukkan Konstantinopel dalam rangka merealisasikan hadist Rasulullah Saw “Sungguh, Konstantinopel akan ditaklukkan di bawah kepemimpinan laki-laki, maka sebaik-baiknya pemimpin adalah pemimpin (yang menaklukkannya), dan sebaik-baiknya pasukan adalah pasukan (yang menaklukkannya) itu”. Usaha yang dilakukan Muhammad Al-fatih dalam menaklukkan kota tersebut telah ia rancang sedemikian rupa. Sehingga strategi politiknya dalam menaklukkan Konstantinopel dapat berjalan dengan baik, hingga akhirnya ia berhasil menaklukkan kota idaman tersebut. Ada tiga hal yang menimbulkan keinginan besar bagi pahlawan- pahlawan Islam zaman dahulu untuk menaklukkan Konstantinopel. Pertama, karena dorongan iman kepada Allah yang disemangatkan oleh hadist Nabi SAW. Kedua, karena beratus tahun lamanya Kota Konstantinopel menjadi pusat kemegahan Bangsa Romawi. Ketiga, karena keindahan negeri itu dan letaknya yang sangat strategis, perhubungan antara dua benua besar, Eropa dan Asia.

Through its particular focus on the political and religious dispositions of individuals, families and social groups, the book offers an original view of late Byzantine politics and society that is not found in conventional narratives. Drawing on a wide range of Byzantine, western and Ottoman sources, it authoritatively illustrates how late Byzantium was drawn into an Ottoman system in spite of the westward-looking orientation of the majority of its ruling elite.

Im Verlaufe der zwei auf die Gründung folgenden Jahrhunderte wurde die Stadt Konstantins mit allen Bauten und Institutionen ausgestattet, die sie zu einer würdigen Hauptstadt machen sollten.

Focusing on the provincial region of Hellas and ...Peloponnesos in central and southern Greece, Judith Herrin shows how the prestige of Constantinople was reflected in the military, civilian, and ecclesiastical officials sent out to govern the provinces. She evokes the ideology and culture of the center by examining different aspects of the imperial court, including diplomacy, ceremony, intellectual life, and relations with the church. Particular topics treat the transmission of mathematical manuscripts, the burning of offensive material, and the church's role in distributing philanthropy.
Herrin contrasts life in the capital with provincial life, tracing the adaptation of a largely rural population to rule by Constantinople from the early medieval period onward. The letters of Michael Choniates, archbishop of Athens from 1182 to 1205, offer a detailed account of how this highly educated cleric coped with life in an imperial backwater, and demonstrate a synthesis of ancient Greek culture and medieval Christianity that was characteristic of the Byzantine elite.
This collection of essays spans the entirety of Herrin's influential career and draws together a significant body of scholarship on problems of empire.
