Zusammenfassung Dieser Artikel berichtet über Imitationen eines Byzantinischen Follis aus der Regierungszeit von Michael II. (820-29). Michael II. ließ Münzen in Konstantinopel und auf Sizilien ...schlagen, die ihn zusammen mit seinem Sohn Theophilus als Mitkaiser zeigen. Zwei Ausgaben von Folles aus Konstantinopel sind bekannt: eine kleinere von 20 mm Durchmesser und einem Durchschnittsgewicht von 5,5 g. mit der Offizin A unter dem M auf der Rückseite und eine größere – möglicherweise von 824/5 – mit ähnlichem Aussehen, aber mit einem Durchmesser von 28-32 mm. und einem Durchschnittsgewicht von 7,5 g. Der auf Abbildung 1 gezeigte Follis von Konstantinopel hat einen Durchmesser von 31 mm und ein Gewicht von 7,8g. Die Vorderseite zeigt die Büsten von Michael (links) mit Chlamys und Theophilus mit Loros, beide mit einem Kreuz auf der Krone. Es gibt ein zusätzliches Kreuz und einen Punkt zwischen ihren Köpfen. Die Umschrift lautet MIXAHL ЅΘ ЄOFILOS. Die Rückseite zeigt ein Kreuz über dem M, darunter die Offizin Θ. Die Buchstaben X/X/X und N/N/N an den Seiten werden als rein dekorative Elemente bezeichnet. Die Folles aus der größeren Serie – Klasse 3 in DOC – sind üblicherweise gut geschnitten und sorgfältig auf Flans in richtiger Größe geprägt. Die Abweichungen von dem Durchschnittsgewicht von c.7,5 g. und dem durchschnittlichen Durchmesser von 30 mm. ist marginal, und die Stempelstellung von 6 Uhr entspricht der Norm. Alle genannten Daten stehen im Gegensatz zu der neuen Münze, bei der es sich mit Sicherheit um eine Imitation handelt, die nun präsentiert werden soll (Abbildung 2): Dieser imitative Klasse 3 Follis hat einen Durchmesser von 30,5 mm. und wiegt 12,22 g. Der Durchmesser entspricht dem Original, allerdings ist das Gewicht viel zu hoch für das Durchschnittsgewicht von 7,5 g. Außerdem entspricht die Stempelstellung von 1 Uhr ebenso wenig der Norm wie das Design der Münze: Die Vorderseite ist dem Original ähnlich, allerdings zeigt sie nun Michael mit Loros auf der linken und Theophilos mit Chlamys auf der rechten Seite. Offenbar hat ein ungelenker Stempelschneider das kopiert, was er auf einem Original gesehen hat. Die Legenden sind ebenfalls vertauscht und zusätzlich verwildert. Anstelle von MIXAHL ЅΘ ЄOFILOS liest man …FILIS IMICSA... Wie Chlamys und Loros sind auch die Kronen auch ziemlich grob dargestellt; das Kreuz zwischen den Köpfen ist zu groß. Die Rückseite der Imitation zeigt ebenfalls ausgetauschte und verwilderte Legenden. Rechts vom M kann man nur ein X anstelle der üblichen X/X/X lesen. Links vom M, wo üblicherweise N/N/N steht, erscheint so etwas wie ЧІ. Verdächtig ist auch das Kreuz als Offizin unter dem M statt des üblichen Θ. Nach alledem bestehen kaum Zweifel, dass wir es hier mit einer ungeschickten Imitation eines Klasse 3 Follis von Michael II. zu tun haben. Interessanterweise listet Grierson im DOC-Katalog einen „italienischen Solidus von grobem Stil, verwilderten Umschriften und niedrigem Goldgehalt im Namen von Nicephorus (802-11) und Theophilus (829-42), der vielleicht den Herzögen von Neapel zuzuschreiben ist“ sowie „Solidi von Theophilus, deren Stil und Fabrik es unmöglich machen, dass sie aus einer regulären Münzstätte stammen“. Im Hinblick auf die von Grierson beschriebenen Imitationen lag der Schluss nahe, dass es sich bei dem hier vorgestellten Follis ebenfalls um eine zeitgenössische Imitation (vielleicht aus Unteritalien) handelt. Diese Einschätzung musste allerdings stark in Zweifel gezogen werden, als Steve Mansfield das Foto eines zweiten Stückes einer solchen Imitation vorlegte (Abbildung 3). Die Abbildung dieser ebenfalls übergewichtigen Münze ist nicht sehr gut, aber ein detaillierter Vergleich lässt den Schluss zu, dass beide Münzen vom selben Stempelpaar stammen. Die zweite Imitation ist mit einer – vermutlich – künstlichen sandigen Patina belegt und hat das Aussehen, als ob sie gerade ausgegraben worden sei. Steve Mansfield hat außerdem mitgeteilt, dass er während einer Reise in Ägypten ähnliche Münzen gesehen habe, die an leichtgläubige Touristen verkauft wurden. Solche Fälschungen sind gut bekannt: Während geführter Touren finden Führer in archäologischen Stätten „zufällig“ gefälschte Münzen in der Erde, die sie zuvor versteckt haben, und verkaufen sie an begeisterte Touristen. haben, und verkaufen sie an begeisterte Touristen.
Historian Eric R Dursteler reconsiders identity in the early modern world to illuminate Veneto-Ottoman cultural interaction and coexistence, challenging the model of hostile relations and suggesting ...instead a more complex understanding of the intersection of cultures. Although dissonance and strife were certainly part of this relationship, he argues, coexistence and cooperation were more common.
Moving beyond the clash of civilizations model that surveys the relationship between Islam and Christianity from a geopolitical perch, Dursteler analyzes the lived reality by focusing on a localized microcosm: the Venetian merchant and diplomatic community in Muslim Constantinople.
While factors such as religion, culture, and political status could be integral elements in constructions of self and community, Dursteler finds early modern identity to be more than the sum total of its constitutent parts and reveals how the fluidity and malleability of identity in this time and place made coexistence among disparate cultures possible.
Vignettes of Constantinople are on four world maps of the Beatus of Liébana (c. 730- 798): 1) the Beatus map of Saint-Sever (Paris, Bibliothèque Nationale, Ms. Lat. 8878, fol. 45bisv-45terr), 2) the ...Beatus map of Osma (Burgo de Osma, Archivo de la Catedral, Cod. 1, fol. 34v-35r), 3) the Beatus map of Navarra (Paris, Bibliothèque Nationale, Nouv. acq. lat. 1366, fol. 24v-25r.), and 4) the Beatus map of Arroyo (Paris, Bibliothèque Nationale, Nouv. acq. lat. 2290, fol. 13v-14r). These vignettes are with the period of origin of each map closely connected. In other words, geography, history and political theology are here intimately linked. The vignettes analyzed of the word maps of Beatus illustrate changes in the approach to the question of the role and significance of Constantinople in the eyes of the Latins in the period from 1050 to 1250. These vignettes were certain schemes, that were designed especially for the people of that time and were understood by them. The vignettes were not a universal system, so every mapmaker adorned them with labels in order to avoid ambiguities in the identification of the respective cities. These vignettes were, however, understandable in the context of a specific map, when the map was analyzed against the then geopolitical and theological background. In consequence of this the vignettes of Constantinople on four world maps of the Beatus of Liébana appears as a particular image of the relations between the Latins and the Greeks.
The book focuses on the “Tractatus contra Graecos” (1252) by an anonymous Dominican from the convent of Constantinople, a theological dossier outstanding with regard to its various interaction with ...contemporary Latin-Greek discourses. Polemical theology is, to a certain extent, always making of: Notions of the other church are conveyed, which - if they did not meet their own expectations of the question of church unity - turned from the partner to the enemy. The analysis of these notions shows that under an often polemical text surface there is sometimes a much more original theology than one would expect this genre of text to be, and this theology is the central leitmotif of this book, drawing out and working into the sketch of medieval ecclesiology.
Mit dem Tractatus contra Graecos (1252) eines anonymen Dominikaners aus dem Konvent von Konstantinopel steht ein kontroverstheologisches Dossier im Fokus dieses Buches, dessen Besonderheit sich aus seiner vielfältigen Interaktion mit zeitgenössischen lateinisch-griechischen Diskursen ergibt. Kontroverstheologie ist zu einem gewissen Grad immer auch making of: Es werden Bilder der jeweils anderen Kirche transportiert, die – wenn sie den eigenen Erwartungen an die Lösung der Frage nach der Kircheneinheit nicht entsprach – von der Partnerin zum Feindbild wurde. Die Analyse dieser Bilder zeigt: Unter einer oft polemischen Textoberfläche verbirgt sich bisweilen eine weit originellere Theologie, als man diesem Textgenre zutrauen würde, und diese Theologie heraus- und in die Skizze mittelalterlicher Ekklesiologie einzuarbeiten ist das zentrale Leitmotiv dieses Buches.
Constantinople, today’s Istanbul, was in the early 20th century a multiethnic, multireligious, and multilingual city with a diversity of writing systems. It was also an important and influential hub ...for international trade and politics, for Europe and the Western world. This essay is part of the research programme World Literatures – Cosmopolitan and Vernacular Dynamics at Stockholm University. It aims to demonstrate how the vernacular (the local) depends on and interacts with the cosmopolitan in literary works on Constantinople during the decades around 1900, with a focus on Scandinavian languages and nationalities. For analysis and discussion I have chosen one poem in Danish by J. P. Jacobsen (1870), and travelogues and short prose texts in Swedish by Birger Mörner (1906) and Stéphanie Beyel (1919), and in Norwegian by Knut Hamsun (1903; 1905). Yuri M. Lotman’s concept of the semiosphere is used in combination with Eric Hayot’s study On Literary Worlds (2012) in order to explore the worldmaking capacity of the selected literary works – that is, how literary worlds are created as immanent aspects of literature. It is demonstrated that the literary world of Constantinople cannot be defined as either peripheral within a Western semiosphere or central within the Ottoman semiosphere. Rather, the city functions in these literary works as a threshold between East and West, or as the multilingual, intermediating and ambivalent border between the semiospheres, characterised by its simultaneously separating and uniting features. Unexpected connections between the vernacular elements of the cosmopolitan city are established. The literary world of Constantinople is not only portrayed in the languages of Scandinavian readers; their languages are also a part of the Constantinopolitan multilingual mix.
In the wake of Jerusalem's fall in 1099, the crusading armies of western Christians known as the Franks found themselves governing not only Muslims and Jews but also local Christians, whose culture ...and traditions were a world apart from their own. The crusader-occupied swaths of Syria and Palestine were home to many separate Christian communities: Greek and Syrian Orthodox, Armenians, and other sects with sharp doctrinal differences. How did these disparate groups live together under Frankish rule? InThe Crusades and the Christian World of the East, Christopher MacEvitt marshals an impressive array of literary, legal, artistic, and archeological evidence to demonstrate how crusader ideology and religious difference gave rise to a mode of coexistence he calls "rough tolerance." The twelfth-century Frankish rulers of the Levant and their Christian subjects were separated by language, religious practices, and beliefs. Yet western Christians showed little interest in such differences. Franks intermarried with local Christians and shared shrines and churches, but they did not hesitate to use military force against Christian communities. Rough tolerance was unlike other medieval modes of dealing with religious difference, and MacEvitt illuminates the factors that led to this striking divergence. "It is commonplace to discuss the diversity of the Middle East in terms of Muslims, Jews, and Christians," MacEvitt writes, "yet even this simplifies its religious complexity." While most crusade history has focused on Christian-Muslim encounters, MacEvitt offers an often surprising account by examining the intersection of the Middle Eastern and Frankish Christian worlds during the century of the First Crusade.

The Swedish author Elsa Lindberg-Dovlette (1876-1944) wrote three books which narrate life in the Ottoman harems of Constantinople from the perspective of female insiders: one was a collection of ...short stories, Kvinnor från minareternas stad (1908) (Women from the City of Minarets) and two others were novels, Främling (1924 and 1929) (Stranger) and Bakom stängda haremsdörrar (1931) (Behind the Closed Doors of the Harem). The present contribution aims to investigate and discuss the different positions that Lindberg-Dovlette takes on harem life, both in her novels and in her own life, as depicted in contemporary feature contributions, interviews and letters. In 1902, she married the Persian prince and diplomat, Mirza Riza Khan Arfa (Arfa-al-Dawla), and lived in his harem for many years – first in Constantinople and then in Monte Carlo – as his sole wife, together with their children. Her two married surnames – one her Swedish maiden name and one alluding to her husband's Persian name – give her a hyphenated identity associated with both the Western and Oriental cultures. Her stories offer a strong critique of the norms of harem life. The strength of her argument, however, does not lie primarily in the discussions and reflections that are explicitly articulated by the female characters, but rather in the aesthetic world as a whole (Hayot, 2012), which is constructed on the basis of limited and distorted views, and depends on both seclusion and accessibility (Bodin, 2018). By bringing together the lives and fates of both Turkish and Swedish women in the space of the harem, the author crosses the conventional boundaries between the Orient and the West – in the aesthetic world of her harem stories as well as in her own life.
Auf dem Konzil von Basel (1431-1449) trafen sich die wichtigsten Kirchengelehrten ihrer Zeit. Sie wollten die Westkirche reformieren, Frieden schaffen und das Schisma mit den Ostkirchen überwinden. ...Sollten sie die bedrängende Herausforderung des Islam, der schon seit geraumer Zeit vor der Haustür stand, dabei völlig vernachlässigt haben? Jacob Langeloh zeigt in seiner Studie erstmals auf, wie präsent der Islam auf dem Konzil war: Wenn die Beschäftigung der lateinischen Kirche mit dieser Religion nach dem Fall Konstantinopels 1453 einen Hochpunkt erreichte, dann nur, weil in Basel dafür die Grundlagen gelegt wurden. Gezielt wurden Informationsquellen über den Islam gesucht, nach Basel gebracht und dort weiterverbreitet. Selbst innerkirchliche Diskussionen etwa in der Ekklesiologie und Mariologie griffen auf dem Islam basierende Argumente auf. In Form des Osmanischen Reichs erschien der Islam auch als politisch-militärische Bedrohung. Wie dieses Feindbild zur Beschäftigung mit der Religion führte, zeigt sich besonders an Johannes von Ragusa OP, der 1435-1437 als Abgesandter des Konzils in Konstantinopel weilte. Seine Lageberichte und Informationen u. a. über eine zum Martyrium bereite Gruppe Franziskaner inspirierten nachweislich die Konzilsväter. Hervorzuheben sind zwei an Muslime gerichtete Bekehrungsschreiben. Diese und weitere Texte werden hier erstmals als Edition und Übersetzung vorgelegt und in ihren Kontext eingeordnet.
