Thinking about language contact and language mixture has been part of the European-Western preoccupation with language from the very beginning. Starting with Plato in the fourth century B.C., it is ...for a long time an unexcited reflection, until the perspective changes radically in the 19th century: the normality is suddenly gone, contact and mixture become first a research taboo and only a little later a serious research focus, from which a separate discipline, contact linguistics, emerges. This book tells for the first time the history of the study of language contact up to the threshold of the 20th century and shows how critical-historiographical studies can help to classify and advance current debates (e.g. in creole studies).
Das Nachdenken über Sprachkontakt und Sprachmischung ist von Beginn an Teil der europäisch-abendländischen Beschäftigung mit Sprache. Angefangen bei Platon im vierten vorchristlichen Jahrhundert, ist es für lange Zeit ein unaufgeregtes Nachdenken, bis sich im 19. Jahrhundert der Blickwinkel radikal ändert: Die Normalität ist plötzlich weg, Kontakt und Mischung werden erst zu einem Forschungstabu und nur wenig später zum ernsthaften Forschungsfokus, aus dem eine eigene Disziplin, die Kontaktlinguistik, hervorgeht. Dieses Buch erzählt erstmals die Geschichte der Erforschung von Sprachkontakt bis an die Schwelle zum 20. Jahrhundert und zeigt, wie kritisch-historiografische Studien helfen können, aktuelle Debatten (z. B. in der Kreolistik) einzuordnen und voranzubringen.
This book assembles contributions dealing with language contact and areal linguistics. The goal of the book is to investigate linguistic convergence in Europe with a strong focus on the languages of ...Eastern Central Europe which show many remarkable similarities. The focus is put on a methodical and empirical component in the investigation of two or more languages in the context of possible language contact phenomena. Languages of Eastern Central Europe and adjacent parts of Europe use a considerable amount of common vocabulary due to the transfer of loanwords during a long period of cultural contact. But they also share several grammatical features—phonological, morphological and syntactic ones. This book tackles lexical and grammatical phenomena in language contact situations. The authors take up diachronic, synchronic and language acquisitional perspectives, and discuss methodological problems for the field.

This contribution aims to clarify some fundamental issues concerning contact linguistics, by (a) defining language contact, (b) distinguishing between investigation levels and (c) presenting the ...methodology of this particular explanatory approach to the analysis of contact linguistics phenomena. The perspective, from which I address the questions above, is largely atypical within the field of contact linguistics. It starts from the well-known distinction between E- and I-language introduced by Chomsky (1986) and draws up a linguistic model of the internal principles and rules (I-Grammar) that govern the combination and recombination of abstract linguistic features from different languages in both the mind of the bilingual person and the grammatical system of a bilingual community. I present data from Cimbrian, a German-based minority language still spoken in Northern Italy, which is a key-study for contact linguistics, since it has been evolving under pressure from Italian and Romance dialects for many centuries. The contact phenomena are analyzed both from the perspective of the whole grammatical system, which is shared by the entire population of speakers, and from the perspective of the grammatical innovations so far made by very few speakers, which may, nevertheless, represent possible future developments of the Cimbrian grammar.
Ziel dieses Beitrags ist einige grundlegende Probleme der Kontaktlinguistik zu klären, nämlich: (a) die Definition von Sprachkontakt, (b) die Untersuchungsebenen und (c) die Methodologie für eine explanative Annäherung zur Analyse von Sprachkontaktphänomenen. Die hier gewählte Perspektive ist für das Feld der Kontaktlinguistik weitgehend untypisch. Sie basiert auf der bekannten Unterscheidung zwischen E- und I-language, die Chomsky (1986) einführte. Darauf wird ein Ansatz entwickelt, der die internen Prinzipien und Regeln (I-Grammatik) modelliert, welche die Kombination und Rekombination abstrakter linguistischer Merkmale aus verschiedenen Sprachen erklärt. Dies erfolgt auf zwei Ebenen, zum einen auf der des grammatischen Systems der bilingualen Sprechergruppe, zum anderen auf der der Kognition des bilingualen Sprechers. Es werden dabei Daten aus dem Zimbrischen präsentiert, einer Deutsch-basierten Minderheitensprache, die heute noch in Norditalien im Gebrauch ist und aufgrund des langen Kontakts zum Italienischen und zu den romanischen Ortsdialekten als Modellsprache für die Kontaktlinguistik betrachtet werden kann. Die Kontaktphänomene werden auf beiden obenge- nannten Ebenen untersucht, nämlich zunächst auf der des grammatischen Systems der Sprache, wie also das Zimbrische in seiner Geschichte fremde Elemente integriert hat, und dann auf der der grammatischen Kompetenz einzelner Sprecher, die sich innovativ zum System verhalten und mögliche zukünftige Entwicklungen des Systems vorwegnehmen.
Las voces de origen portugués en español han sido muy poco estudiadas, en comparación con los préstamos de otras lenguas. Esta monografía responde a la necesidad de contar con datos actuales para ...conocer mejor la riqueza de los intercambios entre ambas lenguas.La realización de esta obra ha requerido del trabajo de investigadores europeos y americanos de prestigio que, desde sus respectivas áreas de especialización, han puesto al día el conocimiento de unos contactos lingüísticos intensos. En los distintos capítulos, se presta atención a la historia de cada zona, se muestra la permeabilidad de las fronteras, tanto en el español peninsular como en el americano, y se analizan las vías de introducción y difusión de los préstamos. El amplio marco cronológico estudiado se inicia en la época medieval, continúa con el acrecentamiento de las relaciones debido a la expansión internacional de ambos países y a la Unión Ibérica, y llega hasta la actualidad con los dinámicos intercambios que se dan en las zonas de contacto con Brasil.Las aportaciones de este volumen, además de paliar la carencia de unos estudios muy necesarios en el ámbito románico, sugieren nuevos enfoques que abren la vía para futuras investigaciones.
Im vorliegenden Beitrag wird der slowenisch-deutscher Sprachkontakt in einem größeren Rahmen der slawisch-germanischen Sprachkontakte eingeordnet und werden die semantischen Felder der deutschen ...Lehnwörter im Slowenischen erörtert. Aufgrund der phonetischen Eigenschaften der deutschen Lehnwörter im Slowenischen werden der Geolekt, d. h. die geographische Varietät, der Soziolekt, d. h. die gesellschaftliche Varietät, und der Chronolekt, d. h. die zeitliche Varietät, aus dem das jeweilige Lexem entlehnt wurde, ebenso wie das semantische Feld, dem das Lexem angehört, festgestellt. Die phonetische und semantische Analyse der deutschen Lehnwörter im Slowenischen bildet die Grundlage zur Feststellung der Kulturbereiche, in welchen die deutsche Kultur zu verschiedenen Zeiten ihren Einfluss auf das Slowenische ausgeübt hat.
La diffusion du français dans le monde a entraîné son implantation dans de nouveaux environnements linguistiques.
