The Balkans provided the escape route for tens of thousands of German Jews, and remained a place of refuge until the Nazis brutally shut it off with the mass murder of Jewish refugees on the ...so-called Kladovo transport starting in September 1941, which can be considered as the beginning of the Holocaust in Europe. Responding to publications about the Western European and American exile experience of the Jews after 1933, this book offers comparative insights into the less trodden paths of the persecuted, illuminating the cultural and political context of the Balkan host countries, the response of local Jewish communities, and the reactions of common people and assorted criminals. The Balkans, often marginalised and loathed, emerges in hundreds of personal accounts of survivors gathered here, supplemented by extensive archival research, as a welcoming getaway, where thousands survived thanks to the Italian occupiers, illiterate peasants, and Communist-led Partisan resisters.
During the last few centuries BC, central and southern Dalmatia were places of conflict between three peoples: 1) the local indigenous people who acted either as independent communities or as part of ...a larger tribal alliance such as the Illyrian kingdom; 2) the colonizing Greeks (Knidos, Syracuse, Paros and Issa); and 3) the Romans. Historical sources and archeological material both confirm that a significant part of their interaction took place on the island of Korčula (Corcyra Melaina/Nigra), located on the border of the most significantly Hellenized area of Central Dalmatian and Illyrian coastline of South Dalmatia. The leading indigenous community on the island most likely resided in the hillfort of Kopila. Research on the Kopila necropolis carried out since 2012 and presented in this article serves as the basis for understanding the ways in which this type of community adapted to the historical events of the region. Combined with data from recent research at Nadin, a hillfort dating back to the Early Iron Age, a brief overview of the contemporaneous situation in southern Liburnia will be proposed.
Based on selected cartographic depictions of Korčula from the early modern age, the paper examines the geographical knowledge about that island at the time the maps were made. Special attention is ...directed to the hitherto unknown map of the island of Korčula from the second half of the 16th or the first half of the 17th century, which is kept in the Archivio do Stato di Venezia, given that it shows a very detailed escription of the island of Korčula, especially its western part. The objective of this paper, using the example of the island of Korčula, is to point out the importance of cartographic renderings as an important source of spatial data and to determine whether there was a gradual improvement in the quality of the displayed geographical content in accordance with the assumed development of geographical knowledge and cartographic techniques from the beginning of the 16th century to the end of the 18th century. On the basis of the selected cartographic depictions of the island of Korčula, the significance of the island of Korčula in maritime and geographic frameworks characterized by different political interests, primarily that of Venice, was confirmed. The diachronic series of early modern geographical maps and nautical charts points to the gradual development of geographical knowledge about the island of Korčula, as well as to the improvement of the quality of graphical visualization of the relevant spatial data about that Croatian island.

Zbog sve veće diversifikacije unutar poljoprivredne djelatnosti i turizma, kombinacija ekološke poljoprivrede i ekoturizma ...daje jedan novi proizvod – „ekoagroturizam“ koji je sve više prepoznat u svjetskom turizmu.

One of the most massive migrations of Croats in the period of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes was the emigration of inhabitants from the island of Korčula to Brazil in 1925. This was ...reported by Franko Mirošević, who described the circumstances that generally encouraged the emigration of the population from Dalmatia, and indicated his suspicion that this emigration was the result of recruitment on part of shipping agencies in conjunction with corrupt officials. Consequently, this paper will address the question of whether this emigration was really the result of severe privation or was it recruitment that induced the population of Korčula to emigrate. Hitherto unused archival sources were analyzed to shed more light on this question. Furthermore, previous allegations regarding the date and number of emigrants, as well as the attitude of the state authorities towards the phenomenon of recruitment in the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes will be re-examined.
The paper offers an overview of the latest research on the so-called Greek-Illyrian coinage of the eastern Adriatic. More precisely, it focuses on the part of the region encompassed by the modern ...Republic of Croatia, i.e. the central Adriatic region. The coins in question were issued by the Greek poleis Pharos, Issa, Heraclea and Korkyra and by the Illyrian ruler Ballaios from the first half of the 4th to the 2nd c. BC, mostly in bronze but rarely also in silver. During this period, a distinctive regional monetary system can be reconstructed, one that played an important role in both local and regional economic history of the central Adriatic region.
The article analyses the series of annual, monthly and daily air temperatures and annual and monthly rainfall at two meteorological stations in Vela Luka and Korčula on the island of Korčula ...(Croatia), for which there are long time series of observations. Today’s locations of meteorological stations are only 33.5 km apart. The average annual air temperature at the Vela Luka station is on average 1°C lower than that measured at the Korčula station. A signifi cant upward trend in mean annual and mean monthly air temperatures was observed at both stations, with the increase being much milder at the Vela Luka station. Warming processes are signifi cantly faster at the Korčula station than at the Vela Luka station. Signifi cantly diff erent values of air temperatures, and in particular the fact of diff erent reactions of air temperatures to climate change at two stations, can be explained by their local position in relation to the open sea and orography of the surrounding terrain. While the Vela Luka station is exposed to the open sea and away from the mainland, at Korčula station the impact of the sea is less signifi cant because the sea is located in a narrow channel between the island of Korčula and the Pelješac peninsula. The distance of the Korčula meteorological station from the Pelješac peninsula and the mainland is signifi cantly smaller, which aff ects the faster trend of rising air temperatures at this station than at the Vela Luka station, where the infl uence of the sea mitigates the eff ect of global warming. Orography and proximity to land aff ect signifi cantly higher rainfall occurrences at Korčula station. Average annual rainfall at this station is 231 mm or 27.5% higher than at Vela Luka station. Both stations show a trend of decreasing annual rainfall.
