Ron Kropa, assistant principal at Reidsville high, says over the years, competition with private industries and requirements from the federal No Child Left Behind act have shrunk the pool of math and ...science teacher applicants. Kropa says lateral entry teachers have left the field after just a few years because they weren't prepared or didn't like working with kids, which he says is the number one thing his school looks for when considering a teaching candidate. Similar supplement plans have been implemented in other areas of the nation and state. In Guilford County, the Action Greensboro Partnership donated $2 million over a three-year period to supplement math and science teachers at Guilford's under-performing high schools. Between the partnership, the UNC system and the Guilford County Schools, the school system is receiving about $4 million in supplements for math and science teachers. "If our children and grandchildren are going to be equipped to compete in a knowledge-based global economy, we have to do more to increase the pool of qualified teachers for our classrooms and attract the best and the brightest into teaching," Erskine Bowles said during the September announcement. "It is our nation's most important profession. We have to begin again to treat it as such."
The 18th-century »Vigenjc Vice« nail smithy is the only fully preserved workshop for hand-forging nails in Slovenia. It is a partly brick, partly wooden building in the centre of the market town. ...Inside there is preserved equipment (forges, anvils, tools, bellows, etc.) and a water wheel in a stream outside the smithy. Until the beginning of the 20th century, the building was used for hand-forging nails. Vigenjc Vice is a museum facility of the Blacksmith Museum, where demonstrations of hand-forging nails are given to private and announced groups.
"It really started with this group when they were 10, maybe," said Steve Scott. "At that time they were playing YMCA soccer and Anne Carroll came to me and said, 'we are tired of YMCA soccer, would ...you be our coach.' The term vigenjc – denoting a nail-smithy – is a rare word that was only used in Kropa and a couple of neighbouring settlements. During the 19th century Kropa had 19 such establishments, each of them ...having their own name. This is the only remaining one, named Vice.
