These translations of the major poems of Giacomo Leopardi (1798--1837) render into modern English verse the work of a writer who is widely regarded as the greatest lyric poet in the Italian literary ...tradition. In spite of this reputation, and in spite of a number of nineteenth-and twentieth-century translations, Leopardi's poems have never "come over" into English in such a way as to guarantee their author a recognition comparable to that of other great European Romantic poets.
By catching something of Leopardi's cadences and tonality in a version that still reads as idiomatic modern English (with an occasional Irish or American accent),Leopardi: Selected Poemsshould win for the Italian poet the wider appreciative audience he deserves. His themes are mutability, landscape, love; his attitude, one of unflinching realism in the face of unavoidable human loss. But the manners of the poems are a unique amalgam of philosophical toughness and the lyrically bittersweet. In a way more pure and distilled than most others in the Western tradition, these poems are truly what Matthew Arnold asked all poetry to be, a "criticism of life." The translator's aim is to convey something of the profundity and something of the sheer poetic achievement of Leopardi's inestimableCanti.

This article provides an analysis of the development of the notions of "self" and "nature" through three stages of Heidegger's thought. The main contention is that Heidegger's conceptions of the self ...and nature are indissolubly connected to each other, and that such connection appears through three concerns that represent important elements of continuity: 1) the "irreducibility of the self," conceived in a non-subjectivist way; 2) the recovery of a non-objectivist "originary" account of nature; 3) the overall commitment to the overcoming of the polarization between subject and object. I argue that there is a parallelism in the way self and nature are addressed in each of the three phases; and that the transformations of the notions are functional to the project of addressing the concerns mentioned earlier. I conclude by addressing the "violence of nature," which remains a "blind spot" in the philosophy of the later Heidegger.

About the Leopardian critical itinerary by Anna Clara Bova: from Illaudabil maraviglia to Al di qua dell'infinito Abstract Through the books in which Anna Clara Bova globally deals with Leopardi's ...thoughts, such as Illaudabil maraviglia (1992), the most recent one, Al di qua dell'Infinito (2009), which includes the articles published in the review Lavoro critico in the '80s, and her last still-unpublished essay, Leopardi e le leggi della vita organica, we have attempted to express the essential lines of her interpretation on the system of nature, as well as on the theory of mankind. In a rich and critical discussion, we have been confronted to Bova's ideas, pointing out the significance of this thinker in the current horizon of the Leopardian criticism. due to its analytical insight. Una contradicción que se manifiesta con más fuerza en el organismo más complejo y delicado, más "conformable" y plástico que existe en el reino animal, el del ser humano, sin que de ello se deduzca su mayor perfección, sino solo su mayor infelicidad. Leopardi's pedagogy contains other authors' influences, it is therefore necessary to deal with the problem of sources. Rousseau's works (Emil in particular) are very relevant to this kind of study. ...Leopardi and Rousseau consider some pedagogical questions from a similar point of view. It's the case of childhood, of educator, of experience, of criticism against official educative theories.

This paper provides an overview of resurrection stories by international writers, from Giacomo Leopardi to some modern classics, such as Tudor Arghezi, Érico Veríssimo, Marcel Thiry, Angélica Gorodischer and Robert Silverberg, as well as by others less well known, in a variety of fictional works on this matter, especially in the fantastic, but also in the speculative mode.

These ...descriptions haven't a direct pedagogical purpose, but it is possible to find in them important ideas on education.
