Cloud-based Radio Access Network (Cloud-RAN) leverages virtualization to enable the coexistence of multiple virtual Base Band Units (vBBUs) with collocated workloads on a single edge computer, aiming ...for economic and operational efficiency. However, this coexistence can cause performance degradation in vBBUs due to resource contention. In this paper, we conduct an empirical analysis of vBBU performance on a Linux RT-Kernel, highlighting the impact of resource sharing with user-space tasks and Kernel threads. Furthermore, we evaluate CPU management strategies such as CPU affinity and CPU isolation as potential solutions to these performance challenges. Our results highlight that the implementation of CPU affinity can significantly reduce throughput variability by up to 40%, decrease vBBU's NACK ratios, and reduce vBBU scheduling latency within the Linux RT-Kernel. Collectively, these findings underscore the potential of CPU management strategies to enhance vBBU performance in Cloud-RAN environments, enabling more efficient and stable network operations. The paper concludes with a discussion on the efficient realization of Cloud-RAN, elucidating the benefits of implementing proposed CPU affinity allocations. The demonstrated enhancements, including reduced scheduling latency and improved end-to-end throughput, affirm the practicality and efficacy of the proposed strategies for optimizing Cloud-RAN deployments.

This research exploration presents a comprehensive methodology for conducting penetration testing for networking security protocols and vulnerabilities on the Wi-Fi networks using Kali Linux, an ...open-source penetration testing platform. The methodology also encompasses four main stages which are Preparation, Information Gathering, Simulated Attack, Reporting. In the Preparation Stage, the scope of the penetration test is defined, authorization is obtained, and within the testing environment the experimentation is prepared. The Information Gathering Stage involves scanning for associated nearby wireless access points (APs), identifying encryption modes, and assessing network coverage. The Simulated Attack Phase verifies the types of vulnerabilities through password cracking, infrastructure penetration tests, and client-side attacks. Finally, the Reporting Phase entails compiling of a very detailed test report with results visualized, findings and recommendations with directions. Experimental results validate the overall effectiveness of the methodology in identifying and mitigating Wi-Fi network vulnerabilities. Through systematic testing and analysis, Kali Linux facilitates proactive security measures to enhance Wi-Fi network defenses.
A new graphical user interface (GUI) for the parsimony program TNT is presented that works under the Linux and Mac operating systems, as well as the Cygwin environment (which runs under Windows). The ...new interface is based on the GIMP Tool Kit, GTK (version 3). Formerly, only Windows versions of TNT had a GUI. The new interface improves upon the existing Windows GUI in several respects. These changes, together with several additions to the program since the publication of version 1.5, warrant a change in minor version, thus moving from version 1.5 to 1.6. Among the most notable improvements are the possibility to access graphical user dialogs by means of simple commands, to easily save trees in SVG format (“Scalable Vector Graphics”) directly from any tree‐diagram being displayed, and to manage analyses in parallel (using multiple processors, by means of the PVM system or “Parallel Virtual Machine”), as well as a generally more stable and consistent behaviour. As the binaries for the new version are compiled as native 64‐bit applications, this removes the limitations for accessing large amounts of memory in the previous GUI Windows interface (which is a 32‐bit application).
The increase in online retail sales (e-commerce) in recent years is a trend that will hardly stop. Those systems need an infrastructure consisting of web servers, data stores, network equipment, and ...more, which can be costly to maintain. Cloud computing offers a wide variety of solutions for these infrastructure needs. However, the vast amount of cloud services, plans, and associated costs usually makes the choice difficult. A critical factor that needs to be considered in this decision is the overall system performance. For Brazilian websites, it is also essential that the service resides in the country to mitigate network communication latency. This paper presents a performance evaluation of Linux distributions offered by cloud computing services in Brazil. The experiments were conducted using the same web system hosted by different Linux distributions. We considered the requests served per second and the consumption of resources. The results demonstrate that a Linux distribution can influence a shopping portal’s performance.

Despite a number of radical changes in how computer systems are used, the design principles behind the very core of the systems stack--an operating system kernel--has remained unchanged for ...decades.We run monolithic kernels developed with a combination ofan unsafe programming language, global sharing of data structures, opaque interfaces, and no explicit knowledge of kernel protocols. Today, the monolithic architecture of a kernel is the main factor undermining its security, and even worse, limiting its evolution towards a safer, more secure environment. Lack of isolation across kernel subsystems allows attackers to take control over the entire machine with a single kernel vulnerability. Furthermore, complex, semantically rich monolithic code with globally shared data structures and no explicit interfaces is not amenable to formal analysis and verification tools. Even after decades of work to make monolithic kernels more secure, over a hundred serious kernel vulnerabilities are still reported every year.
Modern kernels need decomposition as a practical means of confining the effects of individual attacks. Historically, decomposed kernels were prohibitively slow. Today, the complexity of a modern kernel prevents a trivial decomposition effort. We argue, however, that despite all odds modern kernels can be decomposed. Careful choice of communication abstractions and execution model, a general approach to decomposition, a path for incremental adoption, and automation through proper language tools can address complexity of decomposition and performance overheads of decomposed kernels. Our work on lightweight capability domains (LCDs) develops principles, mechanisms, and tools that enable incremental, practical decomposition of a modern operating system kerne.
