The Franciscan Museum and Pinacotheca of the Franciscan Friary in the center of Ljubljana represent, together with the renovated library, a newly conceived cultural and art-historical section of the ...Friary as the mother house of the Slovenian Franciscan Province of the Holy Cross. The library currently holds ca. 70,000 book units, including precious books such as incunabula – one-seventh of all incunabula in the country – and can thus boast the title of Slovenia’s most extensive monastic library. The newly designed museum showcases some of the friary’s key cultural and artistic objects.
This paper focuses on Slovenian territory. It explores the development of the idea of a school garden as a teaching tool and its practical implementation within work school principles and looks at ...differences between urban and rural areas. The article covers the period from the nineteenth century to the mid-1930s, with a particular focus on the interwar period. The central school garden in Ljubljana is presented as an example of a central city school garden. This particular school garden was abolished in 1934, but school gardens remained a part of the curriculum until 1941. The article draws on information from the literature and archival sources from the Historical Archives Ljubljana.
The strongest earthquake in the history of the city hit Ljubljana, which was the center of the Austrian province of Carniola (Kranjska), in 1895. It destroyed many buildings and caused severe damage ...to the residents. This catastrophe is considered an important milestone in the history of Ljubljana. Having passed it, Ljubljana turned from a rather backward provincial town into a rapidly developing modern city, which establishing itself as the national and cultural center of the Slovenes. It was possible to cope with the consequences of the earthquake only with the help of the combined efforts of the government of Austria-Hungary, provincial and city authorities, various public organizations and individuals as well as wide international support rendered to the residents of Ljubljana. Of importance is the question what mechanisms of assistance to the city were involved in order to achieve not only the restoration of Ljubljana but also its radical transformation and subsequent prosperity in the future. The article discusses a number of aspects of this problem, which make it possible to characterize the significance of that event in the life of the city: the perception of the catastrophe by its residents, the priority measures taken to eliminate its consequences, the fundraiser in support of Ljubljana as well as the subsequent activities of the Municipal Council of the city, which largely determined the ways of its further development. Based on interdisciplinary research by Slovenian scientists, materials from the Slovenian press published in Ljubljana, the Historical Archive of Ljubljana, and eyewitness accounts, the author seeks to recreate a fairly complete picture of the life of the city during the disaster and in the first months after it.
The article deals with the administrative development of the area of the former Municipality of Ljubljana Vič - Rudnik. The implementation of the communal system in 1955 led to larger changes in the ...organisation and range of municipalities. Their number began decreasing, and city areas began connecting with rural areas. This is illustrated by the Municipality of Ljubljana Rudnik. The process of merging continued until 1961, when the large Municipality of Ljubljana Vič Rudnik was formed as well. One of the more significant reasons for merging Vič and Rudnik into one municipality was the authorities’ goal of achieving a more uniform economic development of city areas and rural areas. The article also shows the economic foundations of the former municipalities of Ljubljana Vič and Ljubljana Rudnik as well as the consequences the administrative merging had on the development of the area.
Kulturni turizem je ena najstarejših in najbolj uveljavljenih vrst turizma, kar še posebej velja za mestne destinacije, kot je Ljubljana. V tem prispevku obravnavamo kulturni turizem z vidika ...lokalnega prebivalstva. Z anketnim vprašalnikom smo preverili, kakšno je mnenje prebivalcev o kulturnem turizmu v Ljubljani, koliko koristijo ponudbo, katere izboljšave predlagajo in kakšna je dodana vrednost kulturnega turizma za mesto. Prebivalci so poudarili pozitiven prispevek kulturnega turizma za mesto, čeprav to na področju kulturne ponudbe ne ponuja posebnih ugodnosti za prebivalce. Kot prispevek poudarjajo zlasti živahnost mesta, njegovo internacionalizacijo, torej stik prebivalcev s tujci, in dodano vrednost gospodarstvu, ki vpliva tudi na splošni mestni razvoj.

This article examines conflicts concerning urban space, focusing on relationships between autonomous space and neoliberal urbanism through the empirical example of the cultural centre AKC Metelkova ...Mesto in Ljubljana, Slovenia. Through a thematic discourse analysis of activist interviews and collective statements by activist groups connected to Metelkova, research questions concern how urban conflict is constructed from the vantage point of autonomous space; what role autonomous space is assigned in relation to such conflict; and how tensions and antagonisms within the autonomous space can be understood. Theoretically we engage in a reinterpretation of the notion of heterotopia in conjunction with critical urban theory, analysing Metelkova as an autonomous heterotopia. Further, we argue that theoretisations of autonomous spaces need to consider experiences from Central and Eastern Europe, in which the conditions are shaped and constructed in conjunction with particular configurations of abruptly implemented neoliberal governance and the rise of the authoritarianism.
Background: Stress is an inevitable phenomenon of students’ way of life nowadays. In particular, stressors are associated with study obligations and interpersonal relationships. In a time of rapid ...social changes, the problem of stress among young people is highly dynamic and complicated; therefore, academic studies and research regarding this subject are among the most important tasks of society. Our study aimed to analyse the stress and coping strategies among the students of selected faculties of the University of Ljubljana.Methods: We surveyed 622 students of the first and third year of six faculties of the University of Ljubljana, of which 40.5% were men and 59.6% women. The questionnaire was summarized according to the questionnaire used in the project “Risk Factors for Non-Communicable Diseases in Adult Population of Slovenia” was used in our study. The data were processed with SPSS. The basic statistics were calculated, and the hypotheses were checked at the level of 5% of the statistical risk (p ≤ 0.05) using the Chi-square test.Results: The survey showed that most students (46.8%) feel stress occasionally, 30.4% of them often, and 4.7% every day. The students of the Faculty of Medicine are more affected by stress than other students are, especially in comparison to the students of the Faculty of Sport. Women suffer from stress more than men do. A total of 82.2% of the students claimed the burden of study as the reason for tension, stress and a feeling of heaviness. Among them, most students were from the Faculty of Medicine and the least were from the Faculty of Sport; most of them were women. The students of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and the Faculty of Medicine study and learn continuously. Outside the examination period, 38.5% of students sleep only 5 to 6 hours per day. Only 12.8% of students can easily handle stress, 70% of them handle stress with some effort and 16.5% of them with great effort; among them, students of the third year and men cope with stress better than others do. As a coping strategy, a large majority (72%) of students mention sports activity, mostly students of the Faculty of Sport, and the least students of the Faculty of Education. Only 5.2% of students never engage in sport; most are active in sports from 3 to 5 days a week, from 30 to 60 minutes.Conclusion: The study highlighted the problem of stress and coping with it with students from selected faculties of the University of Ljubljana. The survey has shown a high prevalence of self-reported stress, with the vast majority of students reporting physical activity as the most used method of coping. There were significant differences with the corresponding confidence level 95% in terms of gender and faculty. Further research and the implementation of effective measures could improve the quality of life of students, which would later also contribute to reduced levels of burnout in the workplace, as young people as students would be better aware of this problem and knew the appropriate preventive measures.
