Shelf sea areas are the primary oceanic source for methane release, the most abundant hydrocarbon in the atmosphere. As such, the southern North Sea's methane concentration is mainly determined by ...river runoff and tidal marshes. Within such a highly variable temperate estuary, this study is the first to reveal detailed information on the in situ activity, abundance and community structure of methane oxidizing bacteria along a transect from the marine environment near Helgoland island to the riverine harbor of Hamburg, Germany. The in situ methane oxidation rate was determined with a radio tracer, and methane concentration with the head-space method. Abundance and diversity of the methanotrophic bacterial community in the water column was assessed with quantitative polymerase chain reaction for the particulate methane monooxygenase and monooxygenase intergenic spacer analysis. Median abundances ranged from 2.8 × 104 cells l-1 in the marine environment to 7.5 × 105 cells l-1 in the riverine environment. Except for salinity, no conclusive linear correlation between any environmental parameter and the abundance of methanotrophs could be determined. Relating activity with abundance of methanotrophs showed that about 70% of the population accounted for is inactive, especially in the coastal and marine environment. This study found distinct operational taxonomic unit (OTU) community compositions among the 3 environmental categories (river, coast, marine). Several identified OTUs have been reported previously and imply a wide geographic occurrence. Overall, we propose that salinity is the most important driver in shaping differing methanotrophic communities in the riverine, coastal and marine environment.
The cultivated tomato is second most consumed vegetable of the world and is an important part of a diverse and balanced diet as a rich source of vitamins, minerals, phenolic antioxidants and ...antioxidant lycopene having anti-cancer properties. To reap benefit of genomics of the domestic tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) unravelled by Tomato Genome Consortium (The Tomato Genome Consortium, 2012), the bulk mining of its markers in totality is imperative and critically required. The solgenomics has limited number of microsatellite DNA markers (2867) pertaining to solanaceae family. As these markers are of linkage map having relative distance, the choice of selected markers based on absolute distance as of physical map is missing. Only limited microsatellite markers with limitations are reported for variety identification thus there is a need for more markers supplementing DUS test and also for traceability of product in global market. Besides abiotic stress, tomato is known to have biotic stress due to its susceptibility over 200 diseases caused by pathogenic fungi, bacteria, viruses and nematodes. These markers are expected to pave the way of germplasm management over abiotic and biotic stress as well as improvement through molecular breeding, leading to increased tomato productivity in India as well as other parts of the world. In era of IPR the new variety can be identified based on allelic variation among varieties supplementing DUS test and product traceability.

Although predictors of contaminants in serum or whole blood are usually examined by chemical groups (e.g., POPs, toxic and/or essential elements; dietary sources), principal component analysis (PCA) ...permits consideration of both individual substances and combined variables.
Our study had two primary objectives: (i) Characterize the sources and predictors of a suite of eight PCBs, four organochlorine (OC) pesticides, five essential and five toxic elements in serum and/or whole blood of pregnant women recruited as part of the Mother-and-Child Contaminant Cohort Study conducted in Northern Norway (The MISA study); and (ii) determine the influence of personal and social characteristics on both dietary and contaminant factors.
Recruitment and sampling started in May 2007 and continued for the next 31 months until December 2009. Blood/serum samples were collected during the 2nd trimester (mean: 18.2 weeks, range 9.0-36.0). A validated questionnaire was administered to obtain personal information. The samples were analysed by established laboratories employing verified methods and reference standards. PCA involved Varimax rotation, and significant predictors (p≤0.05) in linear regression models were included in the multivariable linear regression analysis.
When considering all the contaminants, three prominent PCA axes stood out with prominent loadings of: all POPs; arsenic, selenium and mercury; and cadmium and lead. Respectively, in the multivariate models the following were predictors: maternal age, parity and consumption of freshwater fish and land-based wild animals; marine fish; cigarette smoking, dietary PCA axes reflecting consumption of grains and cereals, and food items involving hunting. PCA of only the POPs separated them into two axes that, in terms of recently published findings, could be understood to reflect longitudinal trends and their relative contributions to summed POPs.
The linear combinations of variables generated by PCA identified prominent dietary sources of OC groups and of prominent toxic elements and highlighted the importance of maternal characteristics.
A methodological approach to refining the identification and mapping of fluvial terraces has been applied, combining geomorphological field surveys with the computation and assessment of different ...morphometric parameters (local, statistical, and object-oriented), derived from a high-resolution digital terrain model (DTM) obtained from a LiDAR survey. The mid-sector floodplain of the Misa River basins was taken as a valid example of the main river valleys draining the northern Marche Apennines (Italy) and was considered an ideal site to test a combination of different geomorphological techniques for enhancing fluvial terraces’ detection and mapping. In this area, late Pleistocene–Holocene fluvial terraces are well exposed, and their geomorphological and geochronological characteristics have largely already been studied. However, a reliable distinction of the different Holocene terrace levels, including a detailed geomorphological mapping of different terrace features, is still lacking due to the very complex terrace geometry and the lack of good-quality deposit outcrops. Land-surface quantitative (LSQ) analysis has been coupled with the available outcomes of previous studies and ad-hoc geomorphological field surveys to enhance the identification and mapping of fluvial terraces. The results of this work provided information for the discernment of terrace remnants belonging to the full-glacial fill terrace generation (late Pleistocene) as well as reconstruction of the terrace top–surface, and can be used to distinguish the inner terrace limits coinciding with the margin of the floodplain. It has also been possible to identify and delimit the late Pleistocene terrace from a staircase of three younger strath terraces formed during the Holocene. The results of this study demonstrated that the investigation of fluvial landforms, at different scales, can strongly benefit from the integration of field surveys and quantitative geomorphic analysis based on high-resolution digital topographic datasets. In particular, the integration of LSQ analysis with ground-truth geomorphological data can be dramatically helpful for the identification and mapping of fluvial terraces.

This article combines humanistic "data critique" with informed inspection of big data analysis. It measures gender bias when gender prediction software tools (Gender API, Namsor, and Genderize.io) ...are used in historical big data research. Gender bias is measured by contrasting personally identified computer science authors in the well-regarded DBLP dataset (1950-80) with exactly comparable results from the software tools. Implications for public understanding of gender bias in computing and the nature of the computing profession are outlined. Preliminary assessment of the Semantic Scholar dataset is presented. The conclusion combines humanistic approaches with selective use of big data methods.

While chapters have been written as important standalone contributions, the book is intended to systematically take the reader through the key dimensions of stranded assets as a topic of research inquiry and practice. The work adopts a broad-based social science perspective for setting out what stranded assets are, why they are relevant, and how they might inform the decision making of firms, investors, policy makers, and regulators. The topic of stranded assets is inherently multi-disciplinary, cross-sectoral, and multi-jurisdictional, and the volume reflects this diversity.

Climate change is seldom discussed in mainstream social work. Its first presentations on the world stage occurred in Copenhagen during the Conference of the Parties (COP15). This article argues that ...the profession has an important role to play in: helping people understand the issues; promoting sustainable energy production and consumption; mobilising people to protect their futures through community social work; and proposing solutions to greenhouse gas emissions as indicated in two case studies, one based on a community initiative in the Global South, and the other in the Global North. The article also demonstrates that social workers can foster climate change endeavours that are equitable for all, for example the Equitable Carbon Sharing Scheme. Adapted from the source document.
