The joint exhibition of Franz Marc and August Macke (recently at the Neue Galerie, New York, and due to open in Paris in early March) is a revelation. How refreshing it is to encounter unfamiliar ...works known only through reproduction by two leading members of the Blaue Reiter wing of German expressionism. The close personal and artistic connection between the two artists is not widely known in the anglophone world. Their changing relationship and their responses to contemporary avant-garde French painting, particularly the work of Robert Delaunay, put both painters on a new and more interesting footing.
