This article offers an updated study about the altarpiece of Saint Sebastian in the Cathedral of Mallorca. It was carried out under the patronage of the juries of Mallorca in two different stages ...during the eighteenth century. The first phase, developed between 1711 and 1715, was led by Francisco Herrera and Mateu Juan. After the stoppage happened as a result of the War of the Spanish Succession, its execution was resumed in 1754 under the direction of Joan Muntaner, based on the execution of painting and gilding. The altarpiece was finished in 1757 with the arrival from Rome of the central sculpture of Saint Sebastian.
En el presente artículo se ofrece un estudio actualizado sobre el retablo de san Sebastián de la Catedral de Mallorca, que fue realizado bajo el patronato de los jurados de Mallorca en dos etapas diferenciadas durante el siglo XVIII. La primera fase, desarrollada entre 1711 y 1715, estuvo encabezada por Francisco Herrera y Mateu Juan. Después de la paralización producida a raíz de la guerra de sucesión española, su ejecución se reanudó en el año 1754 bajo la dirección de Joan Muntaner a partir de la realización de las labores de pintura y dorado. El retablo se dio por finalizado en 1757 con la llegada desde Roma de la escultura central de san Sebastián.

El segon pas, s’adreça a veure què se’n desprèn, d’aquesta conjunció, i així besllumar qualcuns dels trets del que era el dia a dia del call de Ciutat de Mallorca els anys immediatament anteriors a l’assalt de 1391.
This article is based on a document that has been known about for many years, the will of Saÿt Mili (1377). Despite the value of the will, only a very specific aspect of it, namely the creation of a hospital in the Jewish quarter of Ciutat de Mallorca, has ever been focused on. Here, we go back to the will to look more closely at information that has so far been largely ignored and try to link it with other data from a variety of sources. We then look to see what emerges from doing so, with the aim of shedding light on facets of everyday life in the Jewish quarter of Ciutat de Mallorca in the years immediately before the attack of 1391.
El propósito de este artículo es analizar las ceremonias públicas en la capital del reino de Mallorca destinadas a celebrar los ciclos vitales de la familia real española desde el reinado de Felipe v ...hasta el de Fernando vii. Para ello, se examinan cuáles eran, cómo se celebraban, quiénes las organizaban y participaban, y cuándo tenían lugar, incluyendo los indultos y el perdón general concedidos en ocasión de algunas de estas efemérides. La documentación empleada se encuentra principalmente en las actas municipales del Ayuntamiento de Palma, en el Arxiu Capitular de Mallorca y en el Arxiu del Regne de Mallorca, que contienen información de las principales instituciones que organizaron estos eventos.

The Messinian Salinity Crisis (MSC) is a controversial geological event that influenced the Mediterranean Basin in the late Miocene leaving behind a widespread Salt Giant. Today, more than 90% of the ...Messinian evaporitic deposits are located offshore, buried below the Plio-Quaternary sediments and have thus been studied mainly by marine seismic reflection imaging.
Onshore-offshore records’ comparisons and correlations should be considered a key approach to progress in our understanding of the MSC. This approach has however not been widely explored so far. Indeed, because of the erosion on the Messinian continental shelves and slopes during the MSC, only few places in the Mediterranean domain offers the opportunity to compare onshore and offshore records that have been preserved from erosion. In this paper, we compare for the first time the MSC records from two basins that were lying at intermediate water depths during the MSC and in which salt layers emplaced in topographic lows: the Central Mallorca Depression (CMD) in the Balearic Promontory, and the Caltanissetta Basin (CB) in Sicily. The reduced tectonic movements in the CMD since the late Miocene (Messinian) till recent days, favored the conservation of most of the MSC records in a configuration relatively close to their original configuration, thus allowing a comparison with the reference records outcropping in Sicily. We perform seismic interpretation of a wide seismic reflection dataset in the study area with the aim of refining the mapping of the Messinian units covering the Balearic Promontory (BP) and restituting their depositional history based on a detailed comparison with the Messinian evaporitic units of the Sicilian Caltanissetta Basin. We discuss how this history matches with the existing 3-stages chrono-stratigraphic model. We show that the Messinian units of Central Mallorca Depression could be an undeformed analog of those outcropping on-land in the Sicilian Caltanissetta Basin, thus questioning the contemporaneous onset of the salt deposition on the Mediterranean scale. We show a change in seismic facies at a certain range of depth between stage 1 MSC units, and wonder if this could reflect the threshold/maximum depth of deposition of bottom growth PLG selenites passing more distally to pelagic snowfall cumulate gypsum. Moreover, we confirm that PLG could be deposited in water depths exceeding 200 m.

Measurements of airbone radionuclides 7Be and gross beta (Aβ) jointly with atmospheric aerosols, i.e. particulate matter (PM) were routinely carried out for 10 years (2004–2014) at the University of ...the Balearic Islands, Spain. A total of 728 filter (0.8 μm pore size) samples were collected, and in all of them 7Be and Aβ specific activities were detected. The maximum and minimum specific activities monitored were 0.73 ± 0.41 – 15.8 ± 1.26 mBq m−3 of 7Be and 0.14 ± 0.02 – 2.55 ± 0.04 mBq m−3 of Aβ. PM concentrations were also determined, showing seasonal behavior with the highest concentration in summer and the lowest one in winter. Several meteorological parameters have been considered to explain this intra-annual variation. Principal component analysis (PCA) was applied to the dataset indicating that it is well represented by two principal components that explain 76.6% of total variance. Additionally, a second study with preliminary results of the specific activities of two natural radiotracers (7Be and 210Pb) in PM10 samples was carried out. They were monitored for two years (2013–2015) in air of Mallorca Island. 7Be and 210Pb were detected in most of the PM10 filters, in 100% and 93% of them, respectively. The relationship between activities of both radionuclides and several relevant meteorological parameters was established at 95% confidence level. As a common result to PM and PM10 samples, a strong positive correlation between the evaluated radionuclides and temperature was found.

El estudio de un conjunto cerámico inédito, recuperado a raíz de unas intervenciones arqueológicas llevadas a cabo en el centro histórico de Palma, abre nuevas hipótesis sobre la producción y consumo ...de cerámica en la Mallorca inmediatamente posterior a la conquista. La abundancia de ollas y materiales con defectos de cocción sugiere una industria alfarera local destinada a abastecer a la población colonial de utensilios de primera necesidad. Gran parte de los materiales estudiados entronca formalmente con las producciones catalanas del siglo XIII y con otros conjuntos arqueológicos coetáneos contribuyendo a consolidar las características de la cultura material cerámica propia de este período de transición.
