A short overview of fifty-year development of teaching geography in Maribor is introduced in three time periods: from the point of view of development of study programs, from initial two-year higher ...education study to today's five-year university, from the view of didactics of geography as one of the basic study programs of future geography teachers and from the view point of teaching and scientific part of holders and implementers of didactics of geography. //ABSTRACT IN SLOVENE: Kratek pogled petdesetletnega razvoja pedagoskega studija geografije v Mariboru je predstavljen v treh casovnih obdobjih: z vidika razvoja studijskih programov, od zacetnega dvoletnega visjesolskega do danasnjega petletnega univerzitetnega in mesta didaktike geografije kot enega temeljnih studijskega predmetov bodocih uciteljev geografije ter z vidika pedagoskega in znanstvenega dela nosilcev in izvajalcev didaktike geografije.
When analysing the reasons for poor school attendance and academic achievements of Roma pupils, experts often point out that Roma children and their parents have low respect for school and education. ...In contrast to their views research in Roma children and their parents shows that they may well have reservations about school but not because they have little respect for knowledge. Rather, they are afraid that in school they will be exposed to humiliation, ridicule, physical abuse and disrespect for their culture. In order to get our own answers what school means to Roma pupils, interviews were conducted with 77 Roma pupils attending primary school in Maribor. Our study shows that most Roma children included in the sample enjoy attending school and are aware of the importance of school from the perspective of knowledge acquisition and from the perspective of providing a better future. Additionally, our study shows that school for most children included in the project is a pleasant and important place where social contacts are established. The results are interpreted by acknowledging that the Roma children included in the study come from a socio-economic background that does not differ significantly from the majority of the population and in an environment in which a lot of attention is paid to making school an inclusive institution. The research project confirms that in order to successfully integrate Roma pupils in school and help them achieve good academic achievements it is necessary to implement change not only in the teaching methods and in the relationship between the teacher, the Roma pupil and his/her parents but also in the area of employment and housing.
The year 2011 marks the 50th years from establishment of the Academy of Education in Maribor. One of its successors is also Faculty of Arts, where is conducted the study of geography. The paper ...discusses the development of the Department of Geography and the study of geography in Maribor, which in fifty years passed through the various developmental periods: in the terms of organization, courses, research and human resources. The basic mission of the department, (training of personnel for teaching geography in primary and secondary schools) was conducted through using a variety of courses. In 1985 the Academy changed to Faculty of Education. With the establishment of the Faculty of Arts in 2006 the Department of Geography became part of it. The transition to new study programs, which have been prepared in accordance with the Bologna declaration, brought a series of innovations, as well as challenges; both for teachers and students.
Bean and tuber extracts of Tylosema esculentum (marama) - an African creeping plant - were obtained using ethanol, methanol and water. Based on information that T. esculentum is used traditionally ...for the treatment of various diseases, the antibacterial and anticandidal effects of tuber and bean extracts were investigated. The antimicrobial activity of the extracts was tested on methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA, ATCC 6538), Mycobacterium terrae (ATCC 15755), Corynebacterium diphtheriae (clinical) and Candida albicans (ATCC 2091). We performed the broth microdilution test for the determination of the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and a method to determine survival of microorganisms after in vitro co-incubation with the highest concentrations of T. esculentum extracts, followed by assessment of colony counts. Ethanol and methanol (phenolic) bean extracts exhibited higher potency against bacteria and yeast than aqueous extracts. Marama bean seed coat crude ethanolic extract (MSCE) and seed coat polyphenolic fractions, especially soluble-bound fraction (MSCIB), were highly antimicrobial against M. terrae, C. diphtheriae and C. albicans. All marama bean polyphenolic fractions, namely cotyledon acidified methanol fraction (MCAM), seed coat acidified methanol fraction (MSCAM), cotyledon insoluble-bound fraction (MCIB), seed coat insoluble-bound fraction (MSCIB), cotyledon-free polyphenolic fraction (MCFP) and seed coat free polyphenolic fraction (MSCFP) had high antimicrobial effects as shown by low respective MIC values between 0.1 mg/mL and 1 mg/mL. These MIC values were comparable to those of control antimicrobials used: amphotericin B (0.5 mg/mL) and cesfulodin (0.1 mg/mL) against C. diphtheriae, streptomycin (1.0 mg/mL) and gentamicin (0.4 mg/mL) against M. terrae, and amphotericin B (0.05 mg/mL) against C. albicans. Marama seed coat soluble-esterified fraction (MSCS) had closer activity to that of cefsulodin against M. terrae. High amounts of phenolic substances, such as gallic acid, especially in the seed coats, as well as high amounts of phytosterols, lignans, certain fatty acids and peptides (specifically protease inhibitors) in the cotyledons contributed to the observed antibacterial and anticandidal activities. Marama extracts, especially phenolic and crude seed coat extracts, had high multi-species antibacterial and anticandidal activities at concentrations comparable to that of some conventional drugs; these extracts have potential use as microbicides.

The topic of this paper is contemporary tendencies and business trends in Slovenia, a country which left behind the period of crisis and by transforming its outdated and obsolete industry has ...overcome the period of transition. The paper deals with economy, industrial and economic solutions in Slovenia thanks to which this country has recovered from post-socialistic crisis and thus ranked among European and world's competitive countries. The examples of Maribor and Celje illustrate the fact that though medium sized centers, they can achieve good results by clever investment and planning. Serbia, which is still in the period of crisis, could be governed by the example of Slovenia on its path of development. This paper provides just some of the examples that Serbia could resort to. The issues which Serbia has been facing for a certain period of time could be overcome by adequate investment, building up of the infrastructure, economy transformation and industry modernization.
The paper presents the international urban-architectural workshop Maribor-South (2010-11) as a model for “Maribor’s” urban-architectural workshops, which urban planners evaluate and use to direct ...urban development and theoretical discussion. The presented interdisciplinary project explored possibilities for designing the southern edge of the city in the area where the southern bypass construction is planned. In addition describing the example of the workshop, which develops the theoretical field through a “practical and project approach” with the defined project basis, i.e. the defined area of discussion and project issue, the paper also highlights the opportunity for a “theoretical approach”. The theoretical approach aims at providing a wider insight into the related theoretical field based on a generalised spatial issue. As one of the key priorities of contemporary urban planning and sustainable urban redevelopment, the planned direction of urban development in the areas of constructing transport infrastructure, which is evident in the first approach, moves into a wider referential field (no longer directly related to the project) with the second approach by examining the issues of mobility, space, place, diversity of infrastructures of contemporary space, etc. While in the first approach developing design concepts strives for theoretical conceptualisation, the second approach facilitates focusing on finding links between the theoretical concept and manifestations in real space, though the approaches are always separated. Their operationality is possible only on the level of “combinatorial thinking” and remains beyond direct instrumentality.
