El artículo ofrece un estudio léxico-semántico del argot carcelario mexicano de la época del porfiriato tal como se aprecia en el "Vocabulario de la jerga carcelaria" que se recoge en la novela ...costumbrista La Chaquira (Belén por dentro) de Francisco García González, publicada por entregas en el periódico mexicano El Relámpago entre 1894 y 1895. Se prestará atención a su estructura (léxico patrimonial español, nahuatlismos, anglicismos, etc.) y a los principales procesos lexicogenéticos que allí se documentan. Otro punto de interés será su relación y su estudio contrastivo con otros argots carcelarios hispanos, sobre todo el peninsular, desde una perspectiva tanto diacrónica como sincrónica de aquel entonces para poder documentar las direcciones de la evolución de este sociolecto como propiamente mexicano.
In this paper, we introduce the T-MexNeg corpus of Tweets written in Mexican Spanish. It consists of 13,704 Tweets, of which 4895 contain negation structures. We performed an analysis of negation ...statements embedded in the language employed on social media. This research paper aims to present the annotation guidelines along with a novel resource targeted at the negation detection task. The corpus was manually annotated with labels of negation cue, scope, and, event. We report the analysis of the inter-annotator agreement for all the components of the negation structure. This resource is freely available. Furthermore, we performed various experiments to automatically identify negation using the T-MexNeg corpus and the SFU ReviewSP-NEG for training a machine learning algorithm. By comparing two different methodologies, one based on a dictionary and the other based on the Conditional Random Fields algorithm, we found that the results of negation identification on Twitter are lower when the model is trained on the SFU ReviewSP-NEG Corpus. Therefore, this paper shows the importance of having resources built specifically to deal with social media language.
In this paper, the Mexican Emotional Speech Database (MESD) that contains single-word emotional utterances for anger, disgust, fear, happiness, neutral and sadness with adult (male and female) and ...child voices is described. To validate the emotional prosody of the uttered words, a cubic Support Vector Machines classifier was trained on the basis of prosodic, spectral and voice quality features for each case study: (1) male adult, (2) female adult and (3) child. In addition, cultural, semantic, and linguistic shaping of emotional expression was assessed by statistical analysis. This study was registered at BioMed Central and is part of the implementation of a published study protocol. Mean emotional classification accuracies yielded 93.3%, 89.4% and 83.3% for male, female and child utterances respectively. Statistical analysis emphasized the shaping of emotional prosodies by semantic and linguistic features. A cultural variation in emotional expression was highlighted by comparing the MESD with the INTERFACE for Castilian Spanish database. The MESD provides reliable content for linguistic emotional prosody shaped by the Mexican cultural environment. In order to facilitate further investigations, a corpus controlled for linguistic features and emotional semantics, as well as one containing words repeated across voices and emotions are provided. The MESD is made freely available.
Se emplean datos de un corpus conversacional del español mexicano en Atlanta, Georgia para examinar ejemplos de la expresión del sujeto pronominal (ESP) de segunda persona singular (n = 478) en ...términos de frecuencia y restricciones, incorporando factores tales como tiempo-modoaspecto (TMA), cambio de referencia y especificidad en un análisis de regresión logística. Los resultados sugieren que tú, al igual que otros sujetos, está fuertemente afectado por el cambio de referencia y TMA. Sin embargo, el efecto de TMA es único en el sentido de que se demuestra que el aspecto imperfecto desfavorece tú explícito en relación con otros TMA, divergiendo de estudios previos. Además, la especificidad -un factor que se ha encontrado repetidamente significativo en la bibliografía- es inoperante, lo que sugiere que tú se comporta de manera diferente en este dialecto con respecto a su sensibilidad a factores lingüísticos.
This paper presents a description of the nuclear and prenuclear configurations of the interrogative intonation in Morelia, Michoacán Spanish. The description considers yes/no and wh-interrogatives ...with subtypes: i) information-seeking (neutral), ii) confirmatory and iii) imperatives. The data fromdiscourse completion tasksshow the realization of the nuclear accent L+H* in yes-no questions neutral and confirmatoryinterrogatives.In addition, the alignment of the final boundary tone H% is observed for the three types of interrogatives. These features are distinguished from the nuclear pitch accent L* and the complex boundary tone LH%, documented in yes-no questions neutral and invitations in the varieties of Guadalajara (Orozco, 2017) and Mexico City (De la Motaet al., 2010).
En este artículo se presenta una descripción de las configuraciones tonales de los enunciados interrogativos de la variedad de Morelia, Michoacán. La descripción contempla enunciados absolutos y pronominales con los subtipos: i) búsqueda de información (neutro), ii) confirmativo e iii) imperativo. Los datos de la prueba de completamiento discursivo muestran la realización del acento nuclear L+H* en interrogativas absolutas neutras y de confirmación. Además se observa el alineamiento del tono de juntura final H% para los tres tipos de enunciados interrogativos. Estos rasgos se distinguen del acento nuclear L* y el tono de juntura complejo LH%, documentados en interrogativas neutras e invitaciones en las variedades de Guadalajara (Orozco, 2017) y Ciudad de México (De la Motaet al., 2010).

Este artículo describe un uso particular de marcación de foco en español, construido con el relativo lo que y el verbo ser en dos variantes: lo que es y lo que viene siendo. Con el análisis de 106 ...ejemplos obtenidos del Corpus michoacano del español, se explica cómo esta construcción, derivada de las perífrasis de relativo, se convierte en un focalizador dentro de una estructura monoclausal. Su uso se encontró fundamentalmente en situaciones de comunicación dialógica oral en el ámbito público, con un grado de formalidad intermedio; no así en situaciones completamente coloquiales ni en situaciones de alta formalidad.
This paper describes the use of a special focus marker in Spanish, constructed with the relative lo que and the verb ser in two variants: lo que es and lo que viene siendo. With 106 examples obtained from the Corpus michoacano del español, the paper explains how this construction, deriving from cleft sentences, becomes a focus marker within a monoclausal structure. This usage is mainly attested in oral dialogical discourse in the public sphere, where there is a medium level of formality; it is not in colloquial discourse, nor in highly formal situations.

Esta investigación aporta evidencia empírica de la particularidad del uso de pues en posición final en el habla de la ciudad de Chilapa, Guerrero. Los datos que utiliza son narraciones espontáneas de ...hablantes de las localidades mexicanas de Chilapa, Toluca y Villa Victoria. El análisis de los datos sugiere que pues en posición final tiene las funciones de indicar el fin de una autorreparación, i.e., de la revisión del turno de habla, y de indicar la conclusión de una serie de elementos descriptivos o cronológicos, en ambos casos añadiendo énfasis. A pesar de que las tres localidades se encuentran en la zona dialectal del Altiplano central, pues en posición final se encontró con mucha mayor frecuencia en los datos de Chilapa. La investigación también corrobora que, de acuerdo a la bibliografía consultada, pues en posición final parece ser frecuente en el español de América.
The present investigation shows that pues in final position is a characteristic of the Spanish variety from the city of Chilapa in the state of Guerrero, Mexico. It uses naturally occurring narratives produced by speakers from three Mexican districts: Chilapa, the city of Toluca and the town of Villa Victoria. The data analysis suggests that pues in final position has two functions: it indicates the completion of self-repair, i.e., it marks the end of a turn revision, and it marks the conclusion of a series of elements; also, in both cases pues adds emphasis. Although the three Mexican districts are located inside the same dialectal zone, pues in final position was located overwhelmingly more frequently in the data from Chilapa. The study also corroborates that, according to the consulted literature, pues in final position seems to be common in Latin American varieties of Spanish.
El estudio de las citas directas en el discurso oral es uno de los terrenos más fértiles para el análisis e identificación de la variación y el cambio lingüístico (Romaine y Lange, 1991; Ferrara y ...Bell, 1995; Tagliamonte y Hudson, 1999). La constante incursión de estrategias innovadoras para introducir citas ha sido documentada en inglés, hebreo, alemán y japonés (Maschler, 2002; Buchstaller y D’Arcy, 2009; Buchstaller, 2013). Desafortunadamente, los estudios sobre las citas directas en el español son escasos y se limitan al español peninsular y al español de Puerto Rico. En este trabajo se presenta un análisis de los usos y distribuciones de las estrategias introductoras de citas directas, o marcos introductores de citas, en el habla de la ciudad de México. Los datos fueron extraídos del Corpus sociolingüístico de la ciudad de México (Martín y Lastra, 2011). El análisis muestra que en esta variedad dialectal predominan los verbos dicendi y los marcadores nulos como estrategias para introducir el discurso directo. Asimismo, revela la incursión de nuevas formas que no habían sido documentadas en este dialecto. Finalmente, el análisis de la distribución social de estas formas muestra que es un sistema socialmente estratificado. Si bien no se cuenta con ningún estudio comparativo que permita establecer parámetros en tiempo real, los datos en tiempo aparente aquí presentados sugieren que el sistema de citas directas en el español de México está en proceso de cambio lingüístico.

Phonetic studies of Spanish rhotics report a wide range of allophonic variants of the syllable-initial trill /r/, which raises the question of whether the intervocalic contrast between /r/ and the ...tap /ɾ/ has been neutralized in many dialects. This study presents a spectrographic analysis of syllable-initial rhotics as produced by ten speakers of Veracruz Mexican Spanish in a guided, semi-spontaneous speech task. Trills that show a reduction in the degree of lingual trilling usually contain an approximant phase following one or two lingual contacts, which we represent as ɾɹ or rɹ in narrow transcription. Intervocalic taps show both reduction and elision, but those with a measurable contact are short enough to maintain an acoustic difference with the longer allophones of /r/. Taken with recent studies of rhotics in Dominican Spanish, these findings suggest that the contrast between /r/ and /ɾ/ can be maintained in terms of overall segmental duration even when there is no difference in the number of lingual contacts.
This study examines subject expression from a pragmatic perspective in an emerging bilingual community of Roswell, Georgia, an exurb of Atlanta. Using sociolinguistic interviews conducted in Roswell, ...first-person singular subject pronoun (SP) usage is analyzed among 10 Mexican speakers within five distinct pragmatic contexts: salient referent, switch focus, contrastive focus, pragmatic weight, and epistemic parentheticals. A comparison is made between Georgia speakers and monolingual Mexican speakers in Querétaro in order to explore the possible weakening of pragmatic constraints due to English contact. Results indicate that a contact hypothesis is not supported in terms of overall overt pronoun usage as evidenced by similar frequencies when compared to monolingual Mexican varieties. However, an increased use of overt SPs in the context of salient referent as well as a diminished use of overt SPs in switch focus contexts is found, suggesting a potential weakened sensitivity to such pragmatic constraints.
