After looking at mainstream representations of the transgender body as exhibited in the media frenzy surrounding this highly visible case and the Oscar-winning film based on Brandon's story, Boys Don’t Cry , Halberstam turns her attention to the cultural and artistic production of queers themselves. She examines the “transgender gaze,” as rendered in small art-house films like By Hook or By Crook , as well as figurations of ambiguous embodiment in the art of Del LaGrace Volcano, Jenny Saville, Eva Hesse, Shirin Neshat, and others. She then exposes the influence of lesbian drag king cultures upon hetero-male comic films, such as Austin Powers and The Full Monty , and, finally, points to dyke subcultures as one site for the development of queer counterpublics and queer temporalities.

Sander Gilman seeks to explain why by presenting the first systematic world history and cultural theory of aesthetic surgery. Touching on subjects as diverse as getting a "nose job" as a sweet-sixteen birthday present and the removal of male breasts in seventh-century Alexandria, Gilman argues that aesthetic surgery has such universal appeal because it helps people to "pass, " to be seen as a member of a group with which they want to or need to identify. Gilman begins by addressing basic questions about the history of aesthetic surgery. What surgical procedures have been performed? Which are considered aesthetic and why? Who are the patients? What is the place of aesthetic surgery in modern culture? He then turns his attention to that focus of countless human anxieties: the nose. Gilman discusses how people have reshaped their noses to repair the ravages of war and disease (principally syphilis), to match prevailing ideas of beauty, and to avoid association with negative images of the "Jew, " the "Irish, " the "Oriental, " or the "Black." He examines how we have used aesthetic surgery on almost every conceivable part of the body to try to pass as younger, stronger, thinner, and more erotic. Gilman also explores some of the extremes of surgery as personal transformation, discussing transgender surgery, adult circumcision and foreskin restoration, the enhancement of dueling scars, and even a performance artist who had herself altered to resemble the Mona Lisa. A arte cinematográfica vem se ...destacando como instrumento eficaz de ensino-aprendizagem, pois prepara o aluno para refletir e lidar com diversos conflitos da prática médica. Trata-se de estudo descritivo, com método qualitativo e emprego da técnica de análise temática a partir do documentário “À margem do corpo” como recurso didático para identificar as principais temáticas éticas abordadas pelos alunos e seus posicionamentos em relação a elas. Participaram deste estudo 50 alunos do segundo período de curso de medicina. Quatro temáticas principais foram discutidas: vulnerabilidade e redução da autonomia; objeção de consciência; desumanização e negligência na assistência à saúde; e aborto.

In these scenes, care helps to ease the struggles deriving from the weakness situation in which people in the sanitary environment find themselves. There are many necessary elements to employ the best care and among them, compassion, understood as a feeling of concern about the others’ suffering as well as the wish to help him/her and the action to relieve him/her is essential. This complex emotional phenomenon can be difficult to understand. Regarding this difficulty and the possibilities offered by the cinema as an educational tool, we have considered the objective of identifying and describing emotional behaviours and attitudes of healthcare professionals in the scenes of three selected films: The death of Mr. Lazarescu (2005), Médecin de Campagne (2016) and Wit (2001) to help students and healthcare professionals know, appreciate and be able to understand better the concept of compassion in the field of assistance relationship.
La vulnerabilidad apunta hacia una condición ineludible de fragilidad del ser humano y encierra la posibilidad de sufrir un daño. Esa posibilidad es mayor en situaciones de sufrimiento, de enfermedad y de muerte cercana. En estos escenarios, el cuidado ayuda a paliar los estragos derivados del estado de fragilidad en que pueden encontrarse las personas en el entorno sanitario. Muchos son los elementos necesarios para aplicar el mejor cuidado y entre ellos, resulta imprescindible la presencia de la compasión entendida como un sentimiento de preocupación por el sufrimiento del otro que se acompaña del deseo de ayudarlo y de la acción para aliviarlo. Este fenómeno afectivo complejo puede resultar difícil de comprender. Pensando en esta dificultad y en las posibilidades del cine como herramienta docente, se plantearon como objetivos identificar y describir comportamientos y actitudes compasivas de profesionales sanitarios en las escenas de tres películas: La muerte del Sr. Lazarescu (2005), Un doctor en la campiña (2016) y Amar la vida (2001) para ayudar a estudiantes y a clínicos a conocer, valorar y poder entender mejor el concepto de compasión en el ámbito de la relación asistencial.
