The author delivers a general history of the Abbey of St James, from its beginnings in the Middle Ages up to contemporary times. Based on the information from the relevant historiographical ...literature, the author emphasizes discussion about the time and reasons when Benedictines have left the Abbey, as well as the importance of Augustinians in the period between the mid-sixteenth and mid-eighteenth centuries. Analysis of the relevant literature and archival unpublished sources enabled the author to propose answers to some up-to-now unanswered questions regarding the history of the Abbey after which is named Town of Opatija. From the eighteenth century, this Abbey was organizationally subjected to the Jesuit College in Rijeka, and later to the archdeacon of Collegiate Chapter at Rijeka. After the Diocese of Rijeka was founded the title of the abbot of St James became a part of the title of the Bishop of Rijeka.

The health of officers (as well as the entire army) is exposed to additional risks due to the performance of various life-threatening tasks for the needs of the state. Therefore, it is not unusual for the state to take care of the health of its officers (as well as the army) through a system of Vojvodina medical care or specialised society through the construction of military or officer health resorts Militärkurhaus / Offizierskurhaus with the provision of medical/ health services. The subject of this paper is the relationship between architecture and the provision of military-medical services of officer/military health resorts built by the Society of the White Cross Gesellschaft vom Weißen Kreuze in Kvarner at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. The research is based on data collected from Austrian architectural, medical and tourist magazines and yearbooks of Austrian Society of the White Cross. The results of the research contribute to a better understanding of the improvement of the health of officers, the development of the architecture of health buildings Kurhaus and the entire history of medicine and health tourism in the Croatian Adriatic.
Activities of the “Orljak” Mountaineering Club from Opatija (hereinafter: the Club) are underrepresented in the history of Croatian mountaineering. However, a quarter of a century of existence and ...notable activities in Liburnia justify the need to document such an important episode in local, regional, and even national mountaineering history. This paper, therefore, explores work and activities of the Club from its earliest days in the form of “Orljak” Mountaineering Section within “Opatija” Mountaineering Club (as of 1980), the establishment of independent Club (1984), the period of growth and intensive activities in the 1980s, gradual fading out in the 1990s up to final notable activities in the first decade of the 21st century. The paper is based upon a thorough analysis of unpublished archival resources from several funds. This data is supplemented by interviews with people who were active members of the Club during a certain period, and with secondary literature. This data is little known, even within mountaineers’ circles; therefore, the objectives of this research are to save from oblivion the work and activities of a mountaineering club and to adequately valorise its work as a lasting heritage of local, regional, and national (mountaineering) history.
This study attempts to identify an autoregressive distributed lag model (ADLM) as the data generating process of tourism demand in Opatija approximated by tourist nights. Empirical finding yield to ...the conclusion that the final model passes all the diagnostic checking and that model fits the data reasonably well throughout the sample period. Quantitative researches of tourism demand and accurate forecasts generating should be at the basis of efficient and effective planning and decision-making. Tourism demand modelling and forecasting, as many studies and researches demonstrated, is a relevant issue that can be helpful to all the stakeholders involved in the tourism and hotel industry. The accurate and timely forecast can anticipate future trends and allow to plan, organise and structure tourism capacities and supply more efficiently.
As one of the most dynamic economic activities, tourism is a global engine for the development of the economy in a large number of countries around the world. Due to changes in demand and increased ...competition, one of the basic strategies in tourism is to innovate existing and develop new tourist products. In an effort to adapt to different wishes and needs of new customers in product development, growing emphasis is placed on experience, i.e., emotional component of a journey, and a tourist product can be viewed through the economy of the experience. The starting point of this paper is empirical research on tourist offer management on the model of the town of Opatija. Opatija has the possibility to establish itself in the international tourist market as a competitive year-round tourist destination, and therefore it is necessary to build a quality integral product that will satisfy the wishes and needs of potential demand. In this sense, the role of the current holders of the tourist offer as well as the tourist boards participating in its unification and promotion on the international tourist market is important. By a survey, and for the purpose of scientific value of the paper, the authors further investigated the opinion and views of the citizens of the town of Opatija on the present situation and management of the tourist offer. Based on the results of the research in this paper, corresponding judgements have been made and certain conclusions and subjective opinions projected that could be of relevance to the interested stakeholders in perceiving both encouraging and warning factors.

The primary aim of the paper is to analyse the entirety of the first Croatian series of postcards depicting Rijeka, Opatija, Trsat, Sušak, Kraljevica, Volosko, Bakar, and Lovran from 1889 to 1891 and ...examine their impact on mass printing of photographs, the development of postcards, and impact on the development of tourism. Postcards are understood as integral multilevel hereditary information carriers, which are, essentially, communicators. The main focus is given to the photographers Alois Beer and Ilario Carposio, the printing house Stabilimento Tipo – Lithografico Fiumano, the engraver V. Turati Inc., and other participants in the process of creating postcards. The first analysis is based on the evaluation and selection of old postcards, the second one is based on comparing photographs with woodcuts and halftone printing in printed publications, and the third analysis is based on the comparison of quantitative available data of postcards with the information from the La Bilancia and La Varietà newspapers.
