This paper aims to demonstrate the usefulness of the Bourdieusian concept of “symbolic revolution” for the analysis of the mutations that crystallised around 1130 in the administration, the art of ...government, as well as in the artistic and literary sphere in southern Italy and Sicily during the reign of Roger II. It allows us to take into consideration both their radical novelty and their causes referring to regional pasts, shedding light not only on their conceptual dimension, but also their material dimension. The Sicilian framework is privileged here and the demonstration is carried out through the analysis of three cases: the conception of Palermo as a capital, the difficulties raised by the interpretation of the ceiling of the Palatine Chapel of Palermo and the genesis of the rogerian sigillographic uses.
In this work the situation of the “Circolo Matematico di Palermo” between 1914 and 1928 is analyzed. It will be observed that during this time the Circolo was among the few European scientific ...associations with German as well as French associates. During the 1930s, the nationalist politics of Fascism and above all the racial laws dealt a deadly blow to the Circolo as an international scientific association. We will use the rich correspondence in the Circolo's archives to shed some light on this. In particular, the correspondence between M. De Franchis and E. Landau and other recently found documents will figure prominently.
Transnational organized crime and the fight against it is a significant challenge for our country. Palermo Convention The same United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime was ...adopted by the UN General Assembly on 15 November 2000 with the aim of promoting cooperation in the fight against transnational organized crime. The article examines in depth Article 5 of the Palermo Convention, which calls on member states to directly criminalize participation in organized crime groups. In accordance with this requirement, a number of important changes have been made in the Georgian legislative space. These include the Criminal Code of Georgia, the Law of Georgia on Organized Crime and Racketeering, as well as the Criminal Procedure Code, the Civil Procedure Code of Georgia and other legal acts. The article discusses and evaluates the results of the work of each of the above legal documents, both on a theoretical and practical level. The National Strategy for Combating Organized Crime of Georgia has been evaluated and discussed. Judicial practice has also been studied, which ultimately allows for important conclusions to be drawn. At the end of the paper we will talk about the challenges of Georgia in terms of combating organized crime, the main directions, problems and shortcomings in the fight against organized crime.
This article examines through a participative approach the Ganesha festival and how it helps migrant people of Mauritian origin in Palermo in the process of place-making by mediating between the city ...and the migrant community. The Ganpati celebrates the Mauritian devotees’ spatial and social mobility, connecting them to their affective transnational networks through social media. The devotional community reacted to the policy responses to COVID-19 by enhancing the domestic aspects of the festival, preserving the core meaning of the rite. The festival takes place through a relational network involving the whole community thanks to women’s collective solidarity. On the other hand, the ritual prestige creates competition and elicits the group’s internal fractures and intersections. Hindu devotional spaces are created by re-functionalizing marginal segments of the city and provoke ambivalent reactions from the rest of the citizens.
Throughout his work, film director Francesco Rosi adopted a political commitment to the current issues that afflicted Italy, especially the south of the country. In one of his last works, Dimenticare Palermo (The Palermo Connection 1990), he delves into the relationship between politics and the Mafia. Conditioned by the themes he deals with, his films end up adopting a narrative close to film noir. Contemporary to the debate of that time, he takes a position in favor of a controlled legalization of drugs, even if the confrontation with the PSI, which advocated a different position, has jeopardized his project.
