V prispevku se s socioliterarnega vidika ukvarjamo z zametki pesimizma, kakor se formira v Flaubertovem delu L‘Éducation sentimentale (Vzgoja srca, 1869). Izkaže se, da je pesimistični pogled na svet ...junaka Frédérica Moreauja tesno povezan z njegovim odnosom do obdajajoče ga potrošniške družbe. Najprej raziščemo pojem literarnega polja, kot ga je razdelal Pierre Bourdieu v delu Les Règles de l‘art (1992), zatem pa junakov odnos do potrošništva osvetlimo s pomočjo sociologije romana Luciena Goldmanna, pri kateri razvoj te literarne zvrsti v socioliterarnem oziru določa razmerje med posredujočo in posredovano vrednostjo (valeur médiatrice in valeur médiatisée), ki ga odraža romaneskni junak kot »problematični posameznik« (Goldmann 1964). To razmerje se je v drugi polovici 19. stoletja že povsem nagnilo v prid posredujoče, menjalne vrednosti dobrin, ki je zasenčila njihovo uporabno, pristno vrednost, pri čemer nas zanima, kako vsesplošni merkantilizem botruje preoblikovanju vloge denarja, ki odigra ključno vlogo pri emancipaciji literarnega polja in njegovi umestitvi v diskurz buržoaznega progresivizma. Skozi analizo položaja junaka Frédérica Moreauja v polju moči in umetnosti se izkaže, da v družbi, kakor jo beremo v romanu, niso komodificirane le materialne dobrine, pač pa tudi sama junakova želja in z njo povezana čustva, pri čemer prevzema ljubezen vedno bolj vlogo simbolnega kapitala in statusa. Takšna družbena razmerja potiskajo junaka v pesimizem, katerega simptom so njegove vélléités (želje brez prave volje do izpolnitve), in ga postavljajo v linijo antijunakov, ki se s postopnim razkrojem subjekta nadaljuje z nihilizmom Huysmansovega Folantina in absurdom Sartrovega Roquentina.
The book contributes new insights to the research in the field of anthropology of (post)socialism, culture of consumption, gender and memory. It is based on the testimony of interlocutors who offer ...an insight into the “structure of the feeling” of the socialist era through the practice of consumption, from which on the one hand the complex economic and political dynamics and diverse disciplinary regimes are being reflected and the understanding of power, resistance and emancipation on the other. Author establishes critical distance towards the approach, which discusses socialism as a totalitarianism and shows that socialist policies were not simply dictated from above, but negotiated between the state and its citizens. The female consumer in socialism did not only respond to social barriers and obstacles of history, but she also actively co-created social time. By studying how consumers interpreted and created mutual connections between material objects, moral reputation and (self)respect, the book also shows certain specific elements of Slovenian and Yugoslav development of the European countries after the Second World War.

Wohin entwickelt sich die Konsumgesellschaft? Wie ändern sich die Einstellungen und Verhaltensweisen der Verbraucherinnen und Verbraucher? Zeichnet sich ein Wandel vom industriellen Massenkonsum zum ...individualisierten Digitalkonsum ab? Diesen Fragen widmete sich die dritte Jahrestagung des bundesweiten Netzwerks Verbraucherforschung, deren Ergebnisse der vorliegende Band dokumentiert. Tiefgreifende Transformationen in der Geschichte des Konsums, wie sie die Industrielle Revolution und die Digitalisierung darstellen, können nur durch disziplinübergreifende Forschungsanstrengungen verstanden werden. Neben den klassischen Fächern der Verbraucherwissenschaften wie Wirtschafts-, Rechts-, Politik- und Sozialwissenschaften kommen daher in diesem Band auch historiografische und kulturwissenschaftliche Perspektiven zum Tragen. Die Veröffentlichung hat zum Ziel, den Austausch aktueller Ergebnisse der verbraucherbezogenen Forschung in Wissenschaft und Politik zu fördern und den Wissenstransfer zu stärken.
