As the COVID-19 pandemic represents an unprecedented uncertain situation, the aim of this study is to determine the effect of intolerance of uncertainty over COVID-19 pandemic on anxiety and ...depressive symptoms during the quarantine. The study was conducted with 3805 Argentinean participants, who fulfilled the Beck Depression Inventory, the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, and a modified version of the Intolerance of Uncertainty Scale. Regression analyses indicated a significant effect of intolerance of uncertainty on anxiety and on depressive symptoms. A minor effect of age and gender was also found. Young women with greater intolerance of uncertainty showed the highest levels of anxiety and depressive symptoms. Even though uncertainty distress is an understandable reaction to the current situation, these psychological effects should be monitored.
Humans have a close relationship with nature, and so integrating the nature world into indoor space could effectively increase people’s engagement with nature, and this in turn may benefit their ...health and comfort. Since people spend 80–90% of their time indoors, the indoor environment is very important for their health. Indoor plants are part of natural indoor environment, but their effect on the indoor environment and on humans has not been quantified. This review provides a comprehensive summary of the role and importance of indoor plants in human health and comfort according to the following four criteria: photosynthesis; transpiration; psychological effects; and purification. Photosynthesis and transpiration are important mechanisms for plants, and the basic functions maintaining the carbon and oxygen cycles in nature. Above all have potential inspiration to human’s activities that people often ignored, for example, the application of solar panel, artificial photosynthesis, and green roof/facades were motivated by those functions. Indoor plants have also been shown to have indirect unconscious psychological effect on task performance, health, and levels of stress. Indoor plants can act as indoor air purifiers, they are an effective way to reduce pollutants indoor to reduce human exposure, and have been widely studied in this regard. Indoor plants have potential applications in other fields, including sensing, solar energy, acoustic, and people’s health and comfort. Making full use of various effects in plants benefit human health and comfort.
Purpose
The novel coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) is widely spreading all over the world, causing mental health problems for most people. The medical staff is also under considerable psychological ...pressure. This study aimed to review all research carried out on the mental health status of health care workers (HCWs) to bring policymakers and managers’ attention.
Methods
A literature search conducted through e-databases, including PubMed, EMBASE, Scopus, and Web of Science (WoS) from December 2019 up to April 12th 2020. All cross- sectional studies published in English which assessed the health workers’ psychological well-being during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic included. Study quality was analyzed using NHLBI Study Quality assessment tools.
Results
One hundred relevant articles were identified through systematic search; of which eleven studies were eligible for this review. Their quality score was acceptable. The lowest reported prevalence of anxiety, depression, and stress among HCWs was 24.1%, 12.1%, and 29.8%, respectively. In addition, the highest reported values for the aforementioned parameters were 67.55%, 55.89%, and 62.99%, respectively. Nurses, female workers, front-line health care workers, younger medical staff, and workers in areas with higher infection rates reported more severe degrees of all psychological symptoms than other health care workers. Moreover, vicarious traumatization in non-front-line nurses and the general public was higher than that of the front-line nurses.
Conclusion
During SARS-CoV-2 outbreak, the health care workers face aggravated psychological pressure and even mental illness. It would be recommended to the policymakers and managers to adopt the supportive, encouragement & motivational, protective, and training & educational interventions, especially through information and communication platform.
War related disorders such as posttraumatic stress and psychosomatic disease have been recognised over recent years; however the exact spectrum of these disorders, is unknown.
To study the effect of ...war on the Benghazi Libyan population with epilepsy.
A prospective study by questionnaire and EEG of 23 patients who have epilepsy attending the neurological clinics at Benghazi Medical Center and the University Specialist Clinic Benghazi. Their psychological status was documented, as well as the physical status, drug availability and compliance.
Data were analysed, and graphs created using Microsoft Word EXCEL.
The war did not appear to change the epilepsy frequency in the majority of patients. 18 (78%) reported no change, only five (22%) patients had a significant increase in seizure activity and frequency, of whom 2 (40%) were poorly complaint with anticonvulsant drug therapy. So only 3 patients (13%) had no other apparent cause but the war to account for their increased fits. The emergence of new fear, stress, panic, or depression and phobias was documented in 39%. These were more likely with lack of drug compliance (78%), and the presence of comorbidity (17%).
We concluded that when drug availability and compliance were ensured stable patients with epilepsy were unlikely to suffer increased frequency during stressful war events; however a significant percentage (39%) reported the emergence of new fear, stress, panic, or depression and phobias. These were more likely with lack of drug compliance.
The Indian Armed Forces are fighting the battle at extreme High Altitude, the most inhospitable terrain in the world, for the last thirty five years. The stress of being isolated under harsh ...environmental conditions on a daily basis can have an adverse effect on their mind. However, so far, no study has been undertaken to assess the psychological effects of deployment at extreme High Altitude.
Three hundred thirty-four troops selected for deployment were initially evaluated using the General Health Questionnaire-12 (GHQ-12) and Armed Forces Medical College Life Events Scale (AFMC LES) as screening tools to assess mental health status after obtaining ethical clearance and informed consent. On deinduction after a deployment for more than three months, they were reassessed. The data collected were statistically analysed.
As per GHQ-12 evaluation, after the deployment score increased from 0.2574 to 0.9162, but remained lower than the ‘caseness’ level of 2. Among the 79 troops with a score of 2 and more, the majority were married and had past history of tenures at high-altitude areas. There was statistically significant increase in the AFMC LES scores also on deployment.
Deployment at extremely high-altitude areas for even three months produces significant psychological morbidity among troops.
Physical attractiveness has long been established as a desirable trait in society. Physically attractive individuals are considered more competent, successful, and sociable. Numerous studies have ...examined the influence of makeup on physical attractiveness and its subjective psychological effects. However, the effect of nail care has not yet been examined. This study aimed to explore the psychological effects of nail care. Female Japanese participants (
N
= 334) completed an online questionnaire. The results showed that nail care positively elevated three aspects: positive emotions, relaxation, and vitalization. Moreover, they confirmed significant differences between receiving nail care from salon manicurists and self-performed nail care in terms of positive emotions and relaxation. The results indicated that nail care altered the appearance of the recipients’ nails and their self-esteem, including their feelings, mood, and motivation. Furthermore, this study indicates that it may be preferable for both manicurists and clients not to self-disclose in-depth, as this would negate the positive effects of nail care. The study concludes with recommendations for future research.
Introduction: This study aimed to explore the psychological impact that COVID-19 has had on these health-care professionals in Hail city, Saudi Arabia. Methods: This research employed a ...cross-sectional approach with 90 health-care workers in the three forefront hospital of Hail City, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, namely, Hail General Hospital, King Khalid Hospital, and King Salman Specialist Hospital. These 90 nurses were a result of a convenience sampling since there were less emergency nurses. The researcher adapted the impact of event scale (IES) which sent to the invited nurses through a Google Form link. The t-test was used to analyze gender and nationality while analysis of variance was used to treat age and years of experience. Data collection was conducted between April and May 2022. Results: The participants scored 36.21 ± 19.12 in IES. The gender was found to have a significant difference in IES (t = 2.01; df = 90; P =0.003) showing male scored higher than their female counterpart. Furthermore, the age was found to have a significant difference with IES (F 4, 90 = 10.18; P = 0.005) with older participants (36-year-old and above) being more affected. Meanwhile, the years of experience (F 4, 90 =11.11; P = 0.002) were found to have a significant difference with IES but nationality (t = 21.29; df = 90; P > 0.084) was found no significant difference with IES. Conclusion: Nurses had a probable diagnosis of posttraumatic stress disorder. The male, older nurses and less experienced nurses were found a causal factor to psychological effect. Moreover, nationality was not to have an effect on the psychological status of the nurses.
In this paper, we formulate and study the single-species population models with impulsive toxicant input in polluted environments. For the deterministic single-species population model, the threshold ...between persistence and extinction is established for single-species population. For the stochastic single-species population model, there is a unique positive solution, which is a prerequisite for analyzing the long-term behavior of the stochastic model. Then, a threshold dynamic determined by μ̄ is established, which mainly determines the persistence or extinction of the single-species. Numerical simulations are carried out to support our theoretical results.
•Single-species population models with impulsive toxicant input in polluted environments are developed.•The threshold between persistence and extinction of models are given.•The smaller speed of reversion or bigger intensity of volatility can result in the extinction of the single-species.
Objective(s): To identify the common psychosocial effects of infertility among the childless couples of Bangladesh.Materials and Methods: This cross sectional quantitative survey was conducted at a ...tertiary level fertility center in Dhaka, Bangladesh from November 14, 2012 to November 30, 2012. Respondents were chosen by judgment sampling. Only the couples without any child were chosen for interview. Sixty-six couples were interviewed and three couples refused who came for treatment at the center. Primary data was collected from the respondents with preformed questionnaire. Informed written consent was taken before the interview, from both partners or only one partner where the other was absentResults: The mean ages of the men were 36 years and women were 28 years. The mean age for age at marriage of men and women were 29 and 22 respectively. Among the psychological effects, stress and anxiety were common in both men and women. Family problems were found less among the respondents. Only significant one that was found in both men and women was the pressure from family members, which was found in about one third of the respondents. Social effects were not found among half of the respondents. The other half avoided family gatherings (16%), meeting friends (13%), social gatherings (10%) and 15% respondents said that they do not like to go out at all. Conclusion: The psychosocial effects of infertile couples can lead to depression, frustration and sometimes aggression making them dysfunctional social beings. It also decreases work productivity and quality of life. Necessary preventive measures should be taken through appropriate public health interventions like patient counseling, awareness campaign etc. to avoid the psychosocial consequences.Bangladesh J Obstet Gynaecol, 2016; Vol. 31(1) : 28-33
