The study identified perceptions of livability among New Haven, CT, city-dwelling residents as they age. Five emerging themes resulted from the initial domains ...discussed, including accessibility, affordability, social opportunity, stigma, and future planning. Implications include opportunities for consultative services and advocacy with both residents and local town officials to eliminate barriers and optimize strengths of a community's livability.

Despite the aging demographic in Germany, retirement pensions are enough to finance pensioners' living expenses. The increase of the real income will exceed the burden of the increasing number of ...older people so that people of working age can bear the higher pension payments. Pensions that have been restrained due to political mistakes should be reimbursed out of taxes. General social programmes have to be financed by taxes, too. JEL Classification: H53, H55,138, J14 Trotz des demografischen Wandels ist ein beitragsfinanziertes Rentensystem in Deutschland moglich und wunschenswert. Ein Rentenniveau von beispielsweise 50 % kann auch nach 2030 noch uber Beitrage finanziert werden. Zum einen ubersteigt die Produktivitats- und Einkommensentwicklung die steigende Beitragsbelastung, sodass das Nettorealeinkommen trotz hoherer Beitrage deutlich steigt. Ausserdem mussen versicherungsfremde Leistungen sachgemass durch Steuern und nicht durch Beitrage finanziert werden, um die Beitragshohe zu begrenzen.
This paper establishes some stylized facts about the public educational system of two Brazilian states: Rio Grande do Sul (RS) and Sao Paulo (SP). First, this paper shows that teachers' wages are not ...related with their productivity because wages are mainly affected by tenure. Second, teachers' average wage as fraction of GDP is higher than the one paid in other countries considered example of educational achievements, i.e., there is no evidence that the wages paid in Rio Grande do Sul and Sao Paulo underpay its teachers, comparing with OCDE countries. Third, the average wage paid to teachers is inferior than the average benefit paid to retired teachers, and retirees represent a heavy burden on this states wage bill, above 50% at Rio Grande do Sul and 35% at Sao Paulo. Moreover, the paper shows this states retirement rules are extremely generous comparing with other countries. Fourth, the public teachers' wage compression is stronger than the one observed in the job market for workers' with a college degree in both states. O presente artigo, com base nas folhas de pagamentos dos professores das redes publicas estaduais do Rio Grande do Sul (RS) e de Sao Paulo (SP), mostra que a remuneracao dos professores das redes publicas destes estados nao esta relacionada com o desempenho dos professores, sendo o tempo de servico o fator determinante na evolucao da remuneracao. O salario relativo medio de um professor da rede dos estados do Rio Grande do Sul e de Sao Paulo, como fracao do PIB, e superior ao encontrado em outros paises que sao considerados exemplos de bom desempenho escolar. Ou seja, nao ha evidencia de que o salario nestas redes esteja fora da norma tomando como comparacao os paises da OECD. O artigo mostra, ainda, que o salario medio pago aos professores da ativa e inferior ao beneficio medio concedido aos inativos e que estes apresentam um elevado custo na folha de pagamentos dos estados, superior aos 50% no Rio Grande do Sul e 35% em Sao Paulo. Mais, as regras para aposentadoria dos professores no Brasil sao extremamente generosas quando comparadas com outros paises do mundo. O artigo finaliza documentando a forte compressao salarial existente no magisterio em comparacao ao observado no mercado de trabalho gaucho e paulista para os profissionais com curso superior. This study examines the association between earmarking bequeathable assets and retirement satisfaction. Utilizing longitudinal data from the Health and Retirement Study, the authors examine the ...retirement satisfaction of retirees who have intentionally earmarked their bequeathable assets compared to retirees who have not. The findings suggest that earmarking bequeathable assets is associated positively with higher levels of retirement satisfaction.
The Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs (BMAS) proposed a "Respect Pension" without a means test, which is a compromise: a basic pension with an income test. The differences in the number ...of beneficiaries are distinct. The income test reduces the eligible from 2.5 million to 1.14 million people. About 4% of all West German and 7% of all East German retirees receive the basic pension after the income test. On average, income growth through the "Compromise Pension" is around 33%: women receive 37% and men 29% more. JEL Classification: D63, H55, H75,13 Das SPD-gefuhrte Bundesministerium fur Arbeit und Soziales forderte eine Respekt-Rente ohne Bedurftigkeitsprufung. Der Kompromiss mit CDU und CSU sieht nun eine Grundrente mit Bedarfsprufung vor. Diese Kompromiss-Rente reduziert die Zahl der anspruchsberechtigten Rentner deutlich: Durch eine Einkommensprufung verringert sich der Personenkreis von 2,5 Mio. auf 1,14 Mio. Rentner. Etwa 4% aller westdeutschen und 7% aller ostdeutschen Rentner werden von der Reform profitieren. Die Grundrente sorgt fur einen durchschnittlichen Einkommenszuwachs fur berechtigte Rentner von einem Drittel. Frauen erhalten im Durchschnitt 37% mehr Rente, bei Mannern sind es 29% mehr.
In this paper, our interest has been that of identifying the possibilities of using elderly people as human resource in family and society, taking into account the present trend of doing away with ...the dependence state of elderly people, providing solutions to identify some active social roles that keep them active, values promoted by the theory of activity. Looking through the literature in the field, we have observed that it does not offer too many data on the social and cultural needs of retirees, on their spending free time, data which should help us find solutions to increase the quality of life. We have attempted and to a greater extent we have succeeded in promoting activities that can lead to “more active ageing”, so that these people remain active on the community and territorial level as long as possible.

In this article, it is assumed that the transition from work to ...retirement changes the imaginary, modifying the subjectivity of these workers, giving rise to multiple meanings about breaking the link with working life. This research was conducted primary aiming to investigate how the phenomenon of retirement is interpreted by the feminine imagery. For this purpose, a qualitative exploratory research was developed, in which eleven standard interviews were openly conducted with women who have retired in the last ten years, in different occupational areas. For some respondents, retirement meant a return to a stage of dependency and inactivity, for others, meant the liberation from what was considered a burden or nuisance, seen as an opportunity to have new experiences that were not possible during professional life.

Keywords: Retirement; imagery; identity. A aposentadoria feminina constitui um momento de reorganizacao da vida, que passa pela compreensao de sua dimensao simbolica e imaginaria. Neste artigo, parte-se do pressuposto de que a passagem do trabalho para a aposentadoria altera o imaginario, modificando a subjetividade dessas trabalhadoras, dando origem a multiplos sentidos acerca da quebra do vinculo com a vida profissional. Esta pesquisa foi realizada com o principal objetivo de investigar como o fenomeno da aposentadoria e interpretado no imaginario feminino. Para tanto, desenvolveu-se uma pesquisa exploratoria de natureza qualitativa, na qual foram realizadas onze entrevistas padronizadas de forma aberta com mulheres que se aposentaram nos ultimos dez anos, em diferentes areas profissionais. Para algumas entrevistadas, a aposentadoria significou o regresso a um estagio de dependencia e inatividade, para outras, teve o sentido de libertacao do que era considerado um peso ou incomodo, sendo encarada como uma oportunidade de viver novas experiencias que nao foram possiveis durante a vida profissional. Despite facing significant uncertainty about their lifespans and health care costs, most retirees do not buy annuities or long-term care insurance. In this paper, I find that retirees’ saving and ...insurance choices are highly inconsistent with standard life-cycle models in which people care only about their own consumption but match well models in which bequests are luxury goods. Bequest motives tend to reduce the value of insurance by reducing the opportunity cost of precautionary saving. The results suggest that bequest motives significantly increase saving and significantly decrease purchases of long-term care insurance and annuities.
