Abstract Research suggests that costly displays of commitment increase trust and cooperation. In five studies (total n > 1,700), we investigated whether costly behaviours are more effective in ...promoting trust when integrated within a religious rather than secular context using the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela as a costly display of commitment. First, we show that pilgrims base their pilgrim identity on physical effort (Studies 1A and 1B). Next, in three pre‐registered experiments (Studies 2–4) with the Spanish population, we compared the trustworthiness of people posting on Facebook about their participation in a religious pilgrimage and a secular pilgrimage/hike with various control posts. The results showed that pilgrims/hikers are perceived as more trustworthy than non‐pilgrims and that long‐distance pilgrims are perceived as more trustworthy than short‐distance pilgrims. Moreover, these effects are stronger when the pilgrimage is framed in a religious context compared to a secular context. Our research highlights the key role of religion in the costly signalling of commitment.

Current debates on and theorizations of (post)secularism lack sustained discussions of the role of pilgrimage tourism, spiritual journeys and sacred places. This article is a theoretically informed and empirically based study that explores contemporary pilgrimage tourism as an arena where ‘post-secular’ praxis and discourse fuse. It identifies the multiple ways in which the ‘post-secular’ is performed through pilgrimage tourism, viz. construction of identities, journeys of becoming and performativity as instances of mobile place making. Contemporary pilgrimage tourism to Santiago de Compostela is polyvalent. Pilgrimages cannot be read off as unambiguously religious, secular or post-secular. Pilgrimage tourism spaces are open-ended such that place identity and meaning are being continuously reworked.
This study aims to identify pilgrims’ motivations to undertake the Camiño de Santiago and examine differences regarding socio demographics and other characteristics. An online questionnaire was used ...to collect data from pilgrims that had travelled the Camiño de Santiago. A total of 1140 valid responses was collected from 45 different nationalities. The results indicate that pilgrims are mostly motivated by spiritual aspects, by wanting new experiences and for the nature and sports experience. Interestingly, religious motivations are the least important. The study also found that motivations differ according to several factors such as gender, nationality and the way the pilgrims undertook their journey. The findings of this study offer a better understanding of modern pilgrims, providing useful insights to stakeholders.

El objetivo de esta investigación es el estudio de los Libros de constituciones 1, 2 y 3 de la catedral de Santiago, elaborados en los siglos XIV y XV, mediante los cuales se rigió la institución. ...Una investigación que se inicia con el análisis de la naturaleza diplomática de los códices, su contenido y función y la relación que se establece entre estos aspectos y la materialidad de los libros: las características del soporte, los elementos decorativos y, sobre todo, la escritura empleada en cada uno de ellos. Estos factores, junto con la información sobre sus artífices materiales y el contexto histórico en el que se confeccionaron, nos permiten observar cómo y por qué la cultura escrita jugó un papel indispensable en la esfera gubernativa de la iglesia medieval.
El presente artículo tiene como objetivo la reconstrucción de la historia del gremio de San Eloy de Santiago de Compostela en el siglo XIX, tema sobre el que todavía no existe ningún estudio. La ...metodología de nuestra investigación se ha centrado en primer lugar en analizar la bibliografía publicada sobre la desintegración del sistema gremial en España, motivada por el paradigma filosófico de la Ilustración y la liberalización del trabajo. Para aplicarlo al caso de Compostela y en concreto a los plateros, el segundo paso fue el vaciado de los libros consistoriales y las matrículas industriales del Archivo Histórico Universitario de Santiago, fuentes complementadas por los Anuarios de Comercio de la Biblioteca Nacional de Madrid. Todo ello nos ha permitido conocer el estado de las relaciones entre el moribundo gremio y el Concejo durante el ochocientos, establecer las marcas y marcadores de la ciudad, ubicar la zona de obradores de plateros dentro de la urbe y rescatar del olvido una interesante nómina de artesanos que se resistieron a aceptar la pérdida de sus privilegios protegiendo su legado artesanal.
El objetivo de este trabajo es dar a conocer una serie de noticias inéditas sobre piezas de platería compostelana de finales del siglo XIX y principios del siglo XX, que en su mayoría se encuentran ...en paradero desconocido. La metodología empleada ha sido el vaciado de la Hemeroteca de la Universidad de Santiago de Compostela, donde hemos trabajado como fuentes con más de treinta periódicos compostelanos y de ámbito gallego, hallando cientos de noticias al respecto. Creemos que los textos escogidos demuestran que en la cronología propuesta existió en Santiago una generación de plateros muy importante, olvidada por la historiografía, además de desvelar la construcción de suntuosas obras de platería. Entre ellas destacan las piezas civiles, muy poco conservadas en Galicia, y sobre todo las encargadas para homenajear a políticos y personajes importantes del momento. Las noticias demuestran que en Compostela se construyeron extraordinarias obras con programas de iconografía clásica y de los más variados estilos, pasando del Neogótico al Clasicismo y el Barroco, con especial relevancia, por su originalidad, del Modernismo de raíz catalana. gl O obxectivo deste traballo é dar a coñecer unha serie de noticias inéditas sobre pezas de pratería compostelá de finais do século XIX e principios do século XX, que na súa maioría se atopan en paradoiro descoñecido. A metodoloxía empregada foi o baleirado da Hemeroteca da Universidade de Santiago de Compostela, onde traballamos como fontes con máis de trinta periódicos composteláns e de ámbito galego, atopando centos de noticias con respecto a este tema. Cremos que os textos escollidos demostran que na cronoloxía proposta existiu en Santiago unha xeración de prateiros moi importante, esquecida pola historiografía, ademais de desvelar a construción de suntuosas obras de pratería. Entre elas destacan as pezas civís, moi pouco conservadas en Galicia, e sobre todo as encargadas para homenaxear a políticos e personaxes importantes do momento. As noticias amosan que en Compostela se construíron extraordinarias obras con programas de iconografía clásica e dos máis variados estilos, pasando do Neogótico ao Clasicismo e ao Barroco, con especial relevancia, pola súa orixinalidade, do Modernismo de raíz catalá.
