The textual transmission of the
(a historical text written in Galicia in the 15th century) has been controversial in recent years. Its latest editor, José Souto, holds that the original text is the ...oldest manuscript (C), written in the 15th century by Rui Vázquez. On the other hand, David Mackenzie considered that this manuscript (C) and the seventeenth-century copy (V) come from the lost archetype with different degrees of manipulation. The historical data provided by Fernando López Alsina analysing the reasons for the composition of the
supports Mackenzie’s analysis. The present article examines the indirect tradition and carries out a careful collation of the texts, aiming to draw more effective conclusions as regards the existing filiation.
Urban soils are still insufficiently studied despite the relevance of their functions in the urban environment. The city of Santiago de Compostela (northwestern Spain) offers interesting ...opportunities for the study of urban soils because of its geological diversity and the variety of land use and vegetation. With the objective of increasing information about urban soils in Spain, we studied samples from 56 urban soils (0–20 cm) in this city, developed over different parent materials (granites, gneiss, schists, and amphibolites) and under several land uses (lawn areas, forested areas, urban allotment gardens, peri‐urban agricultural soils, and a green roof). The main physicochemical properties of the soils were analyzed, including bulk density, texture, pH, organic matter, cation exchange capacity, available P, and compounds of Fe and Al. The soils are coarse textured (dominant texture is sandy loam) and acidic (pH in water from 4.7 to 6.9), with moderate to high organic matter contents (13–137 g organic C kg−1). Cation exchange capacity ranges from 9 to 48 cmolc kg−1, with Ca as the most abundant exchangeable cation in most soils. Overall, the soils do not show several of the common features of other urban soils, such as alkalinity, high bulk density, or large amounts of artifacts, and their composition is very similar to their natural counterparts in the region. The conservation of these soils with a low degree of artificialization is essential because they can provide a wide range of ecosystem services.
La documentación producida por los arcedianos apenas ha sido estudiada desde el punto de vista de la paleografía y la diplomática, debido, principalmente, al bajo número de fuentes conservadas. A ...través de más de cincuenta documentos emitidos en pública forma analizaremos, por un lado, las oficinas encargadas de la expedición de diplomas, sus componentes humanos (arcedianos, vicarios y notarios) y sus funciones, así como los procedimientos de elaboración de sus productos escritos. Por otro lado, comprobaremos cuáles fueron las tipologías documentales emitidas en ellas y cómo estas se relacionaron con algunos elementos de su confección material, como los modelos gráficos, los soportes o la lengua.
El peregrino francés Étienne Boret peregrinó a Compostela en 1749 y 1761. De su primera peregrinación se conserva su compostela, dos impresos sueltos con las listas de las reliquias de la catedral, ...así como un inédito y espléndido grabado de la capilla mayor dibujada por Miguel Varela. En este último se representa la escenografía barroca del recinto en tiempos del arzobispo Miguel Herrero Esgueva. Se trata del aparato construido entre las décadas de 1650 y 1670, siendo canónigo fabriquero José de Vega y Verdugo, para la presentación de la imagen medieval de Santiago in cathedra del altar mayor objeto del abrazo de los peregrinos; del Santiago Peregrino y los cuatro reyes españoles rindiéndole homenaje sobre el camarín; así como del Santiago Matamoros atacando cuatro sarracenos en el baldaquino. No obstante, el grabado documenta interesantes cambios posteriores, particularmente la platería añadida al altar, al camarín y a la estatua sedente del Apóstol, financiada por el arzobispo fray Antonio de Monroy (1685-1715) para enriquecer el escenario, siguiendo los postulados de la Contrarreforma.

Non obstante, o gravado tamén documenta cambios posteriores interesantes, en particular a prata engadida á mesa do altar, ao camarín e á estatua sedente do Apóstolo, financiada polo arcebispo fray Antonio de Monroy (1685-1715) para enriquecer o escenario, seguindo os postulados da Contrarreforma.
Los apellidos Bermúdez y Montero han aparecido hasta ahora relacionados con marcas de piezas de plata en trabajos de naturaleza catalográfica y exposiciones, sin que se supiese prácticamente nada ...sobre estos orfebres a pesar de que fueron de las familias más sobresalientes de la platería de Santiago en el siglo XIX. A través de nuestro trabajo en el Archivo Municipal, el de la Catedral de Santiago, el de la Real Sociedad Económica de Amigos del País de Santiago y las hemerotecas de la Biblioteca Nacional de Madrid y la Biblioteca Xeral de la USC, donde trabajamos con prensa histórica y documentos industriales, hemos sido capaces de ubicar a un buen número de miembros de estas familias, que hasta ahora desconocíamos que estaban unidas, y además, por dos matrimonios. Gracias a esto hemos podido periodizar aproximadamente sus carreras, determinar sus marcas y cargos públicos como la contrastía de la ciudad o concejalías en el Ayuntamiento, así como hacer acopio de sus obras, proponer su atribución y datación correcta y pautar unas consideraciones estilísticas.
Many studies have found that the perceived authenticity of cultural and religious events affects event satisfaction and loyalty. Little is currently known about how perceived authenticity is affected ...by the quality of other event attributes, such as food and the availability of information, which are independent determinants of satisfaction and loyalty. This article explores this complex relationship using empirical data collected through a survey conducted during the 2010 Holy Year in Santiago de Compostela. A total of 400 questionnaires were analyzed using confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modeling (SEM). The results of our analysis of the 2010 Holy Year provide support for the effect of event perceived authenticity on event satisfaction, and they also indicate that event perceived authenticity does not have a direct impact on event loyalty. Instead, its relationship to the intention to revisit is mediated by event satisfaction. In addition, the effects of event attributes were assessed for both event satisfaction and perceived authenticity, and significant differences were found.
Esta investigación analiza el patronazgo artístico del arzobispo don Gómez Manrique, reflexionando sobre su cursus honorum y las obras que financió en las catedrales de Santiago de Compostela y ...Toledo y los monasterios de Nuestra Señora de Sopetrán y San Bartolomé de Lupiana. Un estudio global de una vida marcada por la instrumentalización del poder de la corona y los ambientes de crisis en los que desarrolló su actividad político-religiosa permite explicar la naturaleza de los encargos arquitectónicos y artísticos que realizó. El análisis documental, el arqueológico y el de las empresas conservadas demuestra, en las obras gallegas, el apego a una tradición artística conservadora, de carácter defensivo y rudas formas que dejó paso, años más tarde, a los escenarios artísticos renovados y de gran empaque de la diócesis toledana.
This paper explores Anne Carson’s “Kinds of Water: An Essay on the Road to Compostela,” the author’s journal on her pilgrimage to Santiago. Taking water as a metaphor for the Camino, the text ...reflects the creative dimension of the pilgrimage both from an artistic and personal standpoint. Alternative discourses of the female writer and pilgrim occur in a text that is an essay and a meditation on the forms of resilience put into practice by Carson after facing a series of personal losses. The progressive construction of self-knowledge is seen as an emancipatory act that transcended Carson’s mourning period in her experience, which she took as an opportunity to embrace personal transformation. I suggest that my approach can bring useful perspectives not only to further and refine knowledge on Carson in Spain but also for the consideration of resilience as an aspect that contributes to the critical understanding of narratives of individual and social transformation.
Compostela es conocida como el final del Camino de Santiago, pero era también, en la Edad Moderna, la capital de provincia civil y eclesiástica, sede del tribunal de la Inquisición de Galicia y de ...una Universidad. Su existencia tranquila era alterada por la presencia de forasteros, peregrinos y viajeros. Bajo apariencia de peregrinos llegaban disidentes religiosos en sus países de origen, “herejes” de diferentes confesiones religiosas que buscaban convertirse al catolicismo, y también numerosos refugiados católicos irlandeses, que huían de un poder protestante. Este artículo estudia su acogida por las instituciones eclesiásticas y la vigilancia por parte de la Inquisición.
The study of the stopovers on the Way of Saint James allows us to understand how, for a man of the Middle Ages, space covers different and complementary statutes. The concept covers, at the same ...time, the concrete and material space of the journey, the political and institutional space of time and its princes, and the symbolic space of ecclesiological places that affirm the power of the Church here below. Within this predefined framework, the history of societies is inscribed with its cities, its churches, its sanctuaries, all linked to the progressive and still nascent construction of a Spanish state where geography is invested with an epic fresco: the fifth Book of Codex is, certainly, a guide for pilgrims. But it also shows them, and above all, a way in which faith is inseparable from a struggle against the infidel in which the peoples of France and Spain are invited to participate under the aegis of the Emperor Charlemagne and in accordance with his chivalrous model. The book proclaims the need for this unity in the Rosary of the carefully chosen stages which make up the path and which are completed by the Apostle’s Sanctuary. The Guide is also a place of experimentation, that of a writing anxious to give to see, whether it is the strange human creatures that inhabit the lands crossed, the miracles of the saints whose exemplary lives are remembered, or the wonders of sacred art.
