En el presente artículo se explica que se puede entender la enseñanza de la microeconomía en dos componentes: desde los agentes y su toma de decisiones hasta el equilibrio general y el primer teorema ...del bienestar; y, los límites del mercado competitivo y las diversas fallas de mercado. Se argumenta que es necesario añadir una tercera etapa a la enseñanza de la microeconomía, basada fundamentalmente en el teorema de Mantel-Debreu-Sonnenschein y en sus consecuencias. Se argumenta que este teorema señala los límites de la microeconomía neoclásica, la necesidad de incorporar elementos institucionales en el análisis macroeconómico, y en marcar distancias respecto de la estructura de las llamadas ciencias duras.
Este ensayo examina críticamente las principales características estructurales y los resultados de la teoría del equilibrio general (TEG). Se revisa el fracaso de la TEG en su intento por demostrar ...estabilidad global para el caso general de un mercado de n bienes conectado por un sistema de precios. Este resultado negativo es conocido a partir de los trabajos de Arrow, Block, Hurwicz y Scarf; pero esa conclusión se reafirma de manera contundente con el teorema Sonnenschein-Mantel-Debreu. El ensayo también cubre los modelos de formación de precios con intercambios fuera del equilibrio (modelos de non-tâtonnement) en los que se pierde la unicidad del equilibrio. La presencia del subastador walrasiano y las dificultades para introducir el dinero también son analizadas. La TEG también falla en su intento para demostrar la existencia del equilibrio general competitivo con un teorema de punto fijo toda vez que los mapeos utilizados en dicha demostración carecen de la interpretación económica que comúnmente se les atribuye. Finalmente el ensayo analiza algunas implicaciones para la teoría macroeconómica neoclásica y el proyecto reduccionista con expectativas racionales y agentes representativos para dotar de “microfundamentos” al análisis macroeconómico.
The analysis of the stability of a Walrasian tâtonnement is a central chapter in the history of General Equilibrium Theory. The article aims to provide a historical reconstruction of this research ...program, starting with Hicks' Value and Capital (1939). It departs from existing narratives by its focus on the concept of substitutability. It is argued that the concept combined various qualities that made it an element of positive heuristic in the research program. The article chronicles the collapse of this positive heuristic in the 1970s and reevaluates the role of Sonnenschein-Mantel-Debreu results.

We complement the Sonnenschein–Mantel–Debreu results by establishing that an exchange economy, i.e., preferences and endowments, that generates a given aggregate excess demand (AED) function is close ...to the economy that generates a perturbation of this AED. As a consequence, genericity and determinacy results obtained by direct perturbation of an AED are as strong as results obtained by perturbing preferences and endowments.

This volume collects papers from Hugo Sonnenschein's students with the aim of demonstrating his tremendous impact as an advisor. The papers span decades, with the earliest coming from his advisees in ...the first years of his career and the most recent coming in the last two years after his return to research and advising that followed his adventures as a university administrator. Each paper is accompanied with a preface by the student that provides background on the paper and indicates Hugo's influence on its genesis. The papers all lie in microeconomic theory, and moreover all make fundamental contributions to the foundations of the theory.
