(DIPF/Orig.)
"Ich tu's - für unsere Zukunft" (I'll do it - for our future) is a climate initiative cutting across all fields of education that was commissioned by the federal state of Styria in 2012. It was explicitly expanded to include the field of adult education in 2016. The project team kicked it off with a survey that made clear the very low visibility of the topic of climate protection in continuing education offerings in Styria as well as in adult education institutions. The findings showed how it is necessary to sensitize and raise the awareness of adult educators and adult education institutions and led to the following offering for Styrian institutions: a systematic climate check for institutions and trainers including climate protection consulting and support in organizational development, informational and teaching materials such as instructional videos or a tool kit and the establishment, maintenance and management of a network of the initiative's educational partners. The experiences of this initiative show that climate protection is an issue in organizational development requiring perseverance as well as annual audits and good networking. The article finishes with a brief presentation of four of the adult education institutions that participate in the initiative. (DIPF/Orig.)
(DIPF/Orig.)
Education Network Styria is the service and coordination centre for adult education institutions in Styria and offers educational information and guidance as well as a continuing education databank for the Styrian population. It has ties to around 170 institutions. The network has established different forms of communication for successful networking: frequent electronic mailings to members as well as individual follow-ups with specific network partners, internal working group network meetings, informal "Thursday exchanges" once a month or the annual Continuing Education Day for networking outside the partner institutions. The authors summarize their networking as follows: Networks thrive on human qualities. They require continual nudging as well as patience and appreciation, personal commitment, personal relationship building and suitable communication formats. To have a sustainable effect, however, they need resources - financial as well as human. (DIPF/Orig.)
(DIPF/Orig.)
During the coronavirus lockdown, the range of forms of digital education that are available has clearly increased. Independent of contact restrictions, it can be assumed that adult education will continue to be occupied with digital teaching and learning. After the initial "digital push," it is now necessary to enhance and to plan educational formats of quality according to the expectations and needs of the learners. To this end, the Styrian education network (Bildungsnetzwerk Steiermark) conducted a survey of (potential) adult education participants in autumn 2020. It collected information on prior experiences with digital education, the willingness to participate in and pay for it and learners' expectations for digital formats. The results reveal: Willingness to participate in digital education is relatively great, yet expectations are heterogeneous. In the future, specific formats will be required that meet the participants' quality standards. The medium-term goal is to complement prior educational programs with formats that make learning opportunities possible at multiple locations as needed. (DIPF/Orig.)

Education makes participation possible. However, resources are needed to participate in education. How are these resources, especially mobility and broadband internet access, distributed throughout the region of Styria? In his dissertation "Teilhabeatlas Steiermark" (Styria Sharing/Participation Atlas), the author compared the 286 municipalities in Styria by conducting a quantitative survey focusing on different factors related to sharing/ participating in the municipality such as job market situation, population movement, spaces for social interaction, education and continuing education and infrastructure. The result: There are fewer educational offerings above all in the rural areas of Styria, and those interested in education must be more mobile. However, public transport connections in municipalities with fewer continuing education options are also poor, as is access to broadband internet, which makes participation in online continuing education programmes more difficult.

Purpose
Relatively scant attention thus far has been accorded in the marketing literature to the examination and explanation of return behaviour of consumers, especially within the mail order ...industry. The issues examined here consist of the nature and influence of such factors as “buying experience”, “perceived risk”, and “return frequency”. The aim of this paper is to analyse four groups of returners (“heavy returners”, “medium returners”, “light returners”, and “occasional returners”).
Design/methodology/approach
This paper details an empirical study of return behaviour based on a field survey that was conducted specifically focusing on the apparel category. Exploratory factor analyses and analyses of variance (ANOVA) have been employed to test the proposed hypotheses.
Findings
Results show that there exist different reasons for returns among the four groups of returners. In particular, they differ in their initial shopping motivation for mail order purchases, their group‐specific reasons for product returns, and also in their spending patterns.
Research limitations/implications
These are discussed within the body of the paper.
Practical implications
A number of meaningful implications for mail‐order firms are developed from the empirical findings. While product returners have been thought to be an amorphous category (akin to a “black box”) in the past, this paper highlights the disparate motives for making returns. Specific prescriptions are provided regarding the management of product description, consumer return policy, and the handling of consumer perceived risk.
Originality/value
This paper contributes toward the evolving literature of consumer return behaviour in the context of distance purchasing and also by taking into consideration the heterogeneity of return groups. It looks at the characteristics of the return groups and how they differ in their prior motives of making their purchase decisions.
(DIPF/Orig.)
This article sheds light on the representation of women in continuing education courses offered by trade unions focusing on the example of the Trade Union School and the Employee Representative Academy in Styria. Following a historical outline of the development of trade union education in Austria and an introduction to the current structures of these continuing education branches, the first findings of a recent study are presented. An online survey of graduates provided the data. While women are well represented at the Trade Union School (especially compared to their proportion of all trade union members), men are clearly overrepresented in the continuing education courses. An initial analysis of empirical material has revealed potential barriers as well as aspects that promote women’s participation in trade union continuing education. (DIPF/Orig.)
