This first collection of critical essays on Preston Sturges - director, screenwriter, comic genius of Hollywood - reawakens interest in the filmmaker's life and works and reminds readers why his ...movies continue to be culturally significant and immensely enjoyable.
Unfaithfully Yours (Preston Sturges, 1948) is a complex film with an intricate play on the transfer of media characteristics among dissimilar media. In this article, the source of the theoretical ...approach is mainly Lars Elleström’s (2014); its presentation in Bruhn and Schirrmacher (2022) is also used as a reference. The case study focuses on the performance of two Overtures of operas and a tone poem for a concert. In the film, they are used both in the representation of the concert, and as film music, the main character being an orchestra conductor who eventually imagines secret revenge dramas and becomes the sound recorder of three fiction films. The four modalities of media interact in Sturges’s film with great variety, during the rehearsal of Rossini’s Overture before the concert, or during the concert as we share the conductor’s mind busy satisfying his secret obsessions, and even, after the concert, when the material and sensorial modalities of sounds appear in the screening of objects. The main point of the transfer of these media characteristics is how they interact in the spectator’s mind; moreover, they either arouse emotions that are shared with the characters, or laughter owing to burlesque effects thus created.
Director, screenwriter and comic genius, Preston Sturges has been an influence on filmmakers ranging from Orson Welles to the Coen brothers. The first person to win an Oscar for Best Original ...Screenplay, he wrote and directed some of the most bizarre, controversial, and downright hilarious comedies of the 1940s, including Sullivan's Travels and Hail the Conquering Hero. He may be the most talented Hollywood filmmaker yet to receive the critical recognition he deserves.
The Films of Preston Sturges is a pioneering collection of essays by world-famous scholars that chart Sturges' contributions to Hollywood cinema, revealing his pivotal status as an early writer-director, exploring his inimitable style, and making a bold case for his ongoing influence today. Reawakening interest in this filmmaker's life and works, this book will remind readers why Sturges' movies remain not only immensely enjoyable, but of great cultural significance as well.
In this article, I argue that Preston Sturges appropriates the "silliness" of early slapstick and cartoon shorts in Sullivan's Travels to call attention to the artifice of filmmaking and challenge ...the cultural and economic imperatives of studios during the classical Hollywood era.

There are a variety of theoretical and methodological approaches to researching how film spectators make sense of film texts, from the film text itself, the psychological traits and sociocultural ...group memberships of the viewer, or even the location and surroundings of the viewer. However, we can only understand the agency of film spectators in situations of film spectatorship by studying actual spectators’ interactions with specific film texts in specific contexts of engagement. Making Sense of Cinema: Empirical Studies into Film Spectators and Spectatorship uses a number of empirical approaches (ethnography, focus groups, interviews, historical, qualitative experiment and physiological experiment) to consider how the film spectator makes sense of the text itself or the ways in which the text fits into his or her everyday life. With case studies ranging from preoccupations of queer and ageing men in Spanish and French cinema and comparative eye-tracking studies based on the two completely different soundscapes of Monsters Inc. and Saving Private Ryan to cult fanbase of the Lord of the Rings Trilogy and attachment theory to its fictional characters, Making Sense of Cinema aligns this subset of film studies with the larger fields of media reception studies, allowing for dialogue with the broader audience and reception studies field.
Though historians possess a considerable understanding of how Hollywood's Production Code Administration (PCA) reviewed and regulated film content during the classical era, less attention has been ...paid to situations where studios submitted scripts in piecemeal fashion, or when production began without a review of the entire script. This essay draws upon archival records to examine how such a scenario enabled The Miracle of Morgan's Creek (1944) to enjoy a looser PCA review process. Chronologically organizing production records, script rewrites, and PCA correspondence reveals specific ways in which writer-director Preston Sturges diluted the PCA's power, resulting in a controversial finished film that faced sharp criticism from government and religious groups.
The Lady Eve is sophisticated in its tone of wised-up elegance, which Preston Sturges dared himself to sustain even while setting off ostentatious flurries of slapstick. Here, Klawans discusses why ...Sturges pressed a biblical text into the foreground of The Lady Eve.

During the first three decades of sound film, composers created a new idiom of orchestral underscoring by drawing on absolute and program music as well as opera and operetta. Nathan Platte shows how ...Erich Wolfgang Korngold's adaptation of Mendelssohn's music for Max Reinhardt's A Midsummer Night's Dream (1935) came at a crucial juncture in the composer's transformation from a late Romantic artist to a member of the Hollywood studio system.
