Labile soil organic matter (SOM) plays a crucial role in nutrient and carbon cycling, particularly in permafrost ecosystems. Understanding its variation is therefore very important. In the present ...study, we evaluated the seasonal patterns of labile SOM from April 2013 to March 2014 under alpine swamp meadow (ASM), meadow (AM), steppe (AS) and desert (AD) vegetation in permafrost regions of the China's Qinghai–Tibet Plateau. The fractions (0 to 10cm depth) included dissolved organic carbon (DOC), light-fraction carbon (LFC) and nitrogen (LFN), and microbial biomass carbon (MBC) and nitrogen (MBN). These fractions showed dramatic seasonal patterns in ASM and AM soils, but were relatively stable in AD soil. Soil DOC concentrations in the ASM, AM, and AD soils increased from April to May 2013, then increased again from July to August 2013 and from February to March 2014. The LFC and LFN concentrations in all four vegetation types were higher from June to August 2013. The highest MBC and MBN concentrations in the ASM, AM, and AS soils all occurred in the summer and the ASM soil showed a second peak in October or November 2013. Seasonal changes in climatic factors, vegetation types, and permafrost features were great causes of labile SOM variations in this study. Throughout the entire sampling period, the ASM soil generally had the highest labile SOM, followed by the AM, AS, and AD soils; thus, the ASM soil is the best system conserving soil nutrient (especially labile fractions) and microbial activity. Correlation analysis indicated that these fractions were not related to soil moisture and temperature in AS or AD soils, but soil temperature and moisture were significantly related to MBC and MBN in AM soil and DOC in ASM soil. Thus, the response of the labile SOM fractions in this high-altitude permafrost soils to climate change depended strongly on vegetation types.

Summary
Rare biosphere represents the majority of Earth's biodiversity and performs vital ecological functions, yet little is known about its biogeographical patterns and community assembly processes ...in terrestrial ecosystems. Herein, we investigated the community composition and phylogeny of rare (relative abundance <0.1%) and abundant (>1%) bacteria in dryland grassland soils on the Tibetan Plateau. Results revealed similar biogeographical patterns of rare and abundant bacteria at both compositional and phylogenetic levels, but rare subcommunity was more heavily influenced by stochasticity (72%) than the abundant (57%). The compositional variation of rare bacteria was less explained by environmental factors (41%) than that of the abundant (80%), while the phylogeny of rare bacteria (36%) was more explained than that of the abundant (29%). The phylogeny of rare bacteria was equally explained by local factors (soil and vegetation) and geospatial distance (11.5% and 11.9% respectively), while that of the abundant was more explained by geospatial distance (22.1%) than local factors (11.3%). Furthermore, a substantially tighter connection between the community phylogeny and composition was observed in rare (R2 = 0.65) than in abundant bacteria (R2 = 0.08). Our study provides novel insights into the assembly processes and biographical patterns of rare and abundant bacteria in dryland soils.
Indigenous Tibetan people have lived on the Tibetan Plateau for millennia. There is a long-standing question about the genetic basis of high-altitude adaptation in Tibetans. We conduct a genome-wide ...study of 7.3 million genotyped and imputed SNPs of 3,008 Tibetans and 7,287 non-Tibetan individuals of Eastern Asian ancestry. Using this large dataset, we detect signals of high-altitude adaptation at nine genomic loci, of which seven are unique. The alleles under natural selection at two of these loci methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) and EPAS1 are strongly associated with blood-related phenotypes, such as hemoglobin, homocysteine, and folate in Tibetans. The folate-increasing allele of rs1801133 at the MTHFR locus has an increased frequency in Tibetans more than expected under a drift model, which is probably a consequence of adaptation to high UV radiation. These findings provide important insights into understanding the genomic consequences of high-altitude adaptation in Tibetans.
Located along the northeastern edge of the Qinghai‐Tibet Plateau in China, the Qilian Mountains are an important ecological barrier in Northwest China. Therefore, it is of great significance to study ...the plant water sources in subalpine habitats for understanding the ecological and hydrological processes in the Qilian Mountains. Here, based on the samples of precipitation, xylem water, soil water, river water, and spring water collected during May–October 2019 from subalpine habitats on the northern slope of the Qilian Mountains and the measured hydrogen and oxygen stable isotope values (δ2H and δ18O, respectively), the present study gained further insight into plant water sources in this region using the IsoSource model. Water absorption characteristics of shrubs were similar in subalpine habitats. Specifically, plants absorbed water primarily from the topsoil layer (0–30 cm) and rarely from the deep soil layers. Nevertheless, in the dry and growing seasons with high water demand, subalpine shrubs competed for water resources at similar depths. As a result of this competition, the utilization rate of deep soil water improved in some shrubs, expanding the differences in water sources of subalpine shrubs within the same habitat. In addition, in the dry and growing seasons, the water sources of the same subalpine shrub varied across different habitats. Compared with other subalpine shrubs, Salix cupularis Rehder, Salix oritrepha Schneid., Potentilla fruticosa L., Salix sclerophylla Anderss., Rhododendron anthopogonoides Maxim., and Rhododendron przewalskii Maxim. could alter their water use strategies with variations in water conditions, exhibiting a greater drought tolerance. These findings provide valuable information for understanding the subalpine region's eco‐hydrological processes and contribute to the selection of suitable species for the restoration of the subalpine ecological environment under the background of global change.

Kashin-Beck Disease (KBD) is one of major endemic diseases in China. In this study, we estimated the health loss from KBD in Qamdo district of Tibet using the years lived with disability (YLD) metric ...and investigated the influence of environmental selenium (Se) on it by multiple regression model. The results showed that YLD rates produced a different ranking of health loss of KBD from that produced by prevalence rates between Basu and Luolong County, with higher health loss from KBD (43.61 YLD/1000) but lower prevalence (17.86%) in Basu County. YLD rates in two counites were both highest for the 45-64 years age group. Compared with the prevalence rate, the YLD rate had a closer relation to environmental Se and was significantly negatively correlated with Se in both soil and highland barley. The multiple linear regression further revealed that Se contents in cultivated soil and highland barley were main influencing factors for the health loss of KBD, which could explain 90.5% of the variation in YLD rates. The information obtained highlights the significance of the YLD metric in exploring the environmental etiology of KBD and provides important information on which to base decisions on future prevention and control of endemic diseases.

Here, we used transcriptome data of 100 individuals from 20 populations collected from various altitudes on the QTP to investigate the adaptive mechanisms of the aquatic plant
Batrachium bungei
at both the genetic and transcriptional level. To explore genes and biological pathways that may contribute to QTP adaptation, we employed a two-step approach, in which we identified positively selected genes and differentially expressed genes using the landscape genomic and differential expression approaches. The positive selection analysis showed that genes involved in metabolic regulation played a crucial role in
B. bungei
adaptation to the extreme environments of the QTP, especially intense ultraviolet radiation. Altitude-based differential expression analysis suggested that
B. bungei
could increase the rate of energy dissipation or reduce the efficiency of light energy absorption by down regulating the expression of photosynthesis-related genes to adapt to the strong ultraviolet radiation. Weighted gene co-expression network analysis identified ribosomal genes as hubs of altitude adaptation in
B. bungei
. Only a small part of genes (about 10%) overlapped between positively selected genes and differentially expressed genes in
B. bungei
, suggesting that genetic adaptation and gene expression regulation might play relatively independent roles in different categories of functional genes. Taken together, this study enriches our understanding of the high-altitude adaptation mechanism of
B. bungei
on the QTP.
This study reconstructs the place branding model from the perspective of Peircean semiotics. Taking rural tourism development in Dadong, Tibet, as a case study, the multi-method ethnographic approach ...to data collection consists of field observation and in-depth interviews. Place branding is defined as a dynamic negotiation between planned place image from place planners (immediate interpretant), villagers' place identity (dynamic interpretant), and tourists' constructed place image (final interpretant). These results confirm the importance in place branding of placemaking based on authentic place culture and restate the roles played by villagers as place ambassadors and authentic narrators of place culture. Furthermore, the study extends the understanding of place branding and will help destination planners manage destination brands more effectively.

The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau plays an important role in the ecological safety and human health of the surroundings due to its unique geographical position and function. Therefore, it is necessary to ...study the pollution status and potential risk in this area. This study summarizes the distribution of different organic pollutants in biota and environmental media of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Moreover, it also pays attention to the potential health risks of these organic pollutants. Organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) were the most frequently detected in different matrices. In general, the carcinogenic risks of organic pollutants were ranked in the very-low to moderate range for both children and adults. The carcinogenic risks of organic pollutants in fish, food, and water for children were 1–2 times higher than those for adults, while risks of organic pollutants in soil/sediment and in air for children were generally 10.6–16.5 and 2.6–2.8 times higher than those for adults, respectively. The maximal hazard quotient for non-carcinogenic risk was 0.95 (potential risk for children posed by organic pollutants in yak milk of Ruoergai), almost reaching an unacceptable level. Therefore, the potential health risks could not be neglected, especially for children who were more likely to be affected by the pollutants.
