Around 1525, Titian (Tiziano Vecellio, ca. 1488-1576) painted the likeness of Alfonso I d'Este of Ferrara (1475-1534). The duke, attired in stunning furs, brocades, and jewels rests his arm on one of ...his famous cannons. The portrait so enchanted Holy Roman Emperor Charles V (1500-1558) that he requested it as a gift, and a slightly different replacement image was commissioned. This article examines the genesis and significance of these little-studied court portraits, in which the twin personae of the condottiere and magnificent diplomat-prince were cleverly conflated. Alfonso had survived two decades of almost constant threats to his state, and the portraits celebrate his resiliency. This study also considers Titian's portrait of the duke's plebeian mistress, Laura Dianti (ca. 1500-1573), whose image visually complements that of her noble lover in an unprecedented manner. I argue that Laura's image functioned to extend the ducal identity to express his passion for beautiful painting and his engagement with contemporary art theory.
Uno de los mitos clásicos que aparecen en la novela intercalada cervantina, El curioso impertinente, el del rapto de Dánae, no ha recibido mucha atención crítica. Las muchas imágenes visuales de la ...novela cervantina recuerdan la écfrasis de este mito en el Eunuco de Terencio, donde la pintura es una de las causas del rapto de Pánfila. La novela cervantina se hace eco de la controversia que había suscitado el Eunuco, comenzando con San Agustín; controversia que continuó hasta el Siglo de Oro con escritores tales como Juan de Mariana y Juan de Pineda. El estudio de la comedia de Terencio y de la pintura de Dánae enviada por Tiziano a Felipe II ayudan a comprender la importancia del mito como elemento temático y estructural en la novela. La historia de Dánae en Cervantes forma parte del debate sobre el impacto de las artes visuales en la época de la Contrarreforma.

out because of the beauty of its aesthetic forms, the chromatic harmony, the daring and challenging nature of
the composition, and the way it interprets the fragment of a mythical narrative whose subject is Bacchus, the
god of wine and of mystic delirium in the old Greek-Roman culture.
Este artículo se ocupa de analizar La bacanal de los andrios, una pintura realizada por Tiziano en un momento
decisivo del arte europeo que representa una escena festiva a partir del testimonio literario de Filóstrato, y destaca
especialmente por la belleza de sus formas, por la armonía cromática, por el carácter arriesgado y desafiante
de la composición y por su manera de interpretar el fragmento de un relato mítico protagonizado por
Baco: dios del vino y del delirio místico en la antigua cultura grecorromana.
This paper explores the relationship between two seated portraits of Philip II of Spain (1527-1598), one an oil sketch and one apparently the finished portrait derived from the sketch. Thus far, the ...two portraits have been attributed to Titian (Tiziano Vecellio, ca. 1488-1576). However, an analysis of each painting's style, chronology, and provenance challenges the nature of the paintings' relationship to one another and defies the attribution of the finished portrait to Titian. Franz von Lenbach (1836-1904), one of the leading portraitists in nineteenth-century Germany and a superior copyist of Old Master paintings, particularly those by Titian, instead emerges as the pivotal figure uniting the paintings and is here proposed as the author of the finished portrait.

Links of both monarchs to arts are also studied, giving special attention to Tiziano's paintings, youth travels of Philip II and to his Monastery of El Escorial.

The dissertation discusses elements of culture shock and re-entry culture shock in travel literature. The study is specifically concerned with the comparison of the effect of culture shock reflected ...in the works of two authors: Nicolas Bouvier and Tiziano Terzani.After a short presentation of their biographies, including their motivation to travel and the meaning of leading a nomadic life, the thesis focusses on Terzani and Bouvier as writers and discusses the emergence of culture shock in chosen passages of their texts. Some important topics in this research regard the authors’ identity, their understanding of being at home and the meaning of being the Other.It was possible to conclude that the two writers suffered from culture shock during their journeys; Terzani mostly during his stay in Japan and Bouvier particularly in Ceylon. The result of the analysis shows that culture shock is not a short event, but a long process that has an enormous impact on the individual’s life.
